What is this about? (the non-RPG crowd version)

This is a private blog about roleplaying games. The Pen and Paper tabletop variant that is played with a group of friends, some dice, pencils, ungodly amounts of unhealthy snacks, and a lot of fantasy. Not the other kind that involves handcuffs and school girl uniforms or similar things. (I DID get into some rather odd situations with the terminology at various points).

What is this about? (the RPG community version)

I am a German gamer living and working in Poland and mostly playing in English. I also write about it on this blog. I mostly play Labyrinth Lord (a clone of OD&D), Traveller, and Das Schwarze Auge (the German standard game), but mix in some other systems as well.

just realized that the ad I have on my blog for my Tuesday DnD game didn't have a link to the chat room. now it does. I wonder if it will actually get more people to join or not. We will see. Anyway: how about nice page with ads for open table games. Is this an actual good idea or am I just way too tired? Imagine a bunch of tiles, all of them advertising a different game. People just can go on the page, click at something that looks good, then be dropped to an appropriate page. #ttrpg #irc

the venues were mostly the Grenzland Discord, although we switched to using Galene for a lot of games The Shadowrun games were mostly on Google Meets, although I managed to switch them over to Galene as well lately

very technically the Lodz Comic festival also might count as a ttrpg convention, but there were like two tables and a miniature painting workshop and thanks to my kid I didn't get to enjoy anything of it.

My roleplaying stats for 2025:* ran 34 games on Grenzland (of those 2 Hidden Fortress (Star Wars OSR) and 3 Pirates of Drinax (MgT2), the rest was part of the Glimmermark campaign (Labyrinth Lord)* played in 9 games on Grenzland (Dolmenwood and the Montag in Zuerich games which were largely not on Monday)* attended 1 con (Cauldron Euro OSR Con, played 5 games)* ran/played 19 games of #Shadowrun 3rd edition* posted 25 roleplaying-related blog posts* published 1 fanzine article #ttrpg #osr

Been looking at audio dramas and audio books to put on an installation of #audiobookshelf. Lots of German public broadcasters still do those and put them for free online, and there's some BBC and OTR stuff on the internet archive. But are there other good sources in English or German?Some good #podcasts maybe?#audiodrama #radiodrama #audiobook

it's Christmas Eve, or rather Christmas Day by now. Around 9pm I had some time on my hands, so I bought myself a used piece of hardware (a tape drive) on ebay. it's 2am now and I just realized the seller has already posted the device. it's Christmas Eve man, chill and watch some Die Hard, don't make me feel bad!

I have the feeling this trope was tripped up by TNG, which changed the klingons from generic "dark and vaguely menacing humanoids" to a much more distinct rubber forehead design, but also gave them a much more distinct culture. which in turn got fetishized, but maybe not in the same way as before

this includes published Star Trek novel Pawns and Symbols, and Lois McMaster Bujold's Shards of Honor (which started out as a ST fanfic. just mentally replace the Barrayarans with Klingons and the Betans with the Federation and you'll see)

random thought about science fiction: it's widely known that it was female authors and especially their fondness of the Kirk/Spock pairing that kept Trek alive between the series (and created slash fiction. The slash in slash fiction is literally the one between Kirk and Spock).But idly thinking about pre-TNG science fiction I realized that I can come up with multiple published books where the "tall, dark, handsome" trope was a Klingon (or the closest equivalent in the setting). #startrek

I've been together with my wife for 17 years and have been eating the usual Polish Christmas eve fare for just as long and... I don't think I ever will start to like it. I know traditionally one doesn't eat meat on Christmas eve, but that still leaves options... Can't tell my in-laws that.

It used to be you could go to a second hand bookstore and find some bargains. Now they are going "market prices" for everything.Found a few sf books in English at a stand when coming out of the supermarket. 400pln (100 euros) for a set of Dr. Who books, 150pln (ca. 40 euros) for a cheap Star Wars paperback from the 90s. What the hell.#books

while the Internet Archive in general is great, it's also a convenient place for nazis to disseminate their shit with. A large part of German language media on there is either 3rd Reich media, neonazi stuff, or cryptofascist stuff noone else would touch.(and I notice that Mein Kampf has multiple positions in the list of most popular audiobooks on there)#internetarchive #nazis

Installed navidrome as a local music streaming service. It turns out finding an android app that can play music from a fileshare on the same network reliably is basically impossible.Navidrome is a self-hosted music streamer that can interface with subsonic apps.I now have it running on my test/omv server and it works fine.Installation on my pihole rpi0 was not yet successful, but maybe it's better that way#navidrome #selfhosted #music

I could have sworn when I last got into delta chat they didn't warn quite as much about not mixing chatmail and normal email.Anyway, I tried using my own email address on my own server, and it did work. Until it didn't and it wouldn't even recognize my address as a valid server anymore. I mean, really. It's lockers. Lockers are basically a solved problem. Why have lockers that can only be opened via electronic impulse from a computer system? What problem is that supposed to solve that couldn't be solved with a lock and key system?

Just reading about the power outage in SF leaving all the robo taxis stranded, just as I am waiting for my kid to leave a children's birthday, which he can't leave because all the lockers in the place are electronic and have a power issue.
