About the hackathon
General
The Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC) and its 1,600 subsidiaries have come together to host our fourth GNEC Hackathon! We encourage those passionate about engineering, technology, and programming to join this event to demonstrate their skills while competing for prizes such as internships and mentorships with our partners.
Why Us
GNEC is well-connected to the UN and has a global network of NGOs. You can tap into this network during and after this hackathon.
Our partners will also host various workshops where they will teach new technological concepts while also offering insight into their mission and the work they have done. The workshops are a great opportunity to explore one’s interests and possible career paths.
Theme
Through the GNEC Hackathon, we encourage participants to explore sustainability through technology by setting the hackathon's theme as one or two of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). This hackathon's theme will be SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).
Get started
Join our Discord server (https://discord.gg/n5pcCHcGC6) and meet with everyone else involved in the hackathon. You are welcome to make your own team but if you don't have teammates, our Discord server is a great place to look for a team. The opening ceremony will provide further information regarding the hackathon and the working period will commence shortly after. Be creative, make new friends, and above all, have fun!
Requirements
What to Submit
As mentioned above, participants will be tasked with creating a project that revolves around the UN SDGs. Each team will submit a short 2-5 minute video that shows off their project, how it relates to the theme for the hackathon, and what issue they intend to resolve through their project. Additionally, teams should upload a work file; this file should be either a ZIP file of the source code for an app or website or a slideshow or PDF for their product or business plan.
Prizes
Internship @ GNEC Hackathon
The Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC) Hackathon brings together innovators, technologists, and changemakers from around the world to develop creative, tech-driven solutions to the most pressing global challenges — from climate resilience and public health to digital inclusion and sustainable development. Rooted in GNEC’s 60-year legacy of collaboration with the United Nations, the Hackathon empowers participants to turn bold ideas into action for civil society. The first-place winners will have the opportunity to intern with GNEC Hackathon, applying their innovative solutions and technical expertise to ongoing UN-aligned initiatives that amplify the voice of civil society at the global decision-making table.
Internship @ Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC)
The Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC) is a storied nonprofit that has, for 60 years, partnered with the United Nations to guarantee a voice at the decision-making table for civil society leaders. And that role has never been more critical, as the world battles a global pandemic and a planet-threatening climate crisis, among other challenges. The second-place winners will have the opportunity to intern with GNEC, bringing their unique skillsets to the decision-making table.
Internship @ World Assembly of Youth (WAY)
The World Assembly of Youth (WAY) is the international coordinating body of national youth councils and national youth organizations, with 140 member organizations from all continents. WAY aims to represent its members in international organizations and institutions while promoting the work of voluntary youth organizations worldwide. The third-place winners will have the opportunity to intern with WAY and apply their skillsets to the mission of promoting youth worldwide.
