This is hard

March 19, 2012

The Total Money Makeover mantra is “live like no one else so that later you can live like no one else” and I keep having to repeat it to myself over and over. Just a couple weeks into the plan and we’re confronted over and over with the things that got us here in the first place. Shawn’s mom wants to know when we’re coming to visit. The first instinct is to say, “let me check the calendar” when really what we need to say is “we can’t afford it right now and won’t be able to for a while.” My mom sends me an email informing me that I finally have my chance to see Wicked. I was happy and then remembered that $300 for a date night isn’t really in the cards right now. Poop. It very quickly becomes clear how we ended up here. We need to learn to say no.

We can do this.

Pretty sure my pump is dying

March 5, 2012

And I’m not sure what to do. When I turn it on it beeps 4 times and the digital display never comes on. It still pumps but I’m not sure how much longer it will. I contacted Medela and their suggestion was to buy a new pump. Sigh. This pump cost around $300. Buying a new one is a big deal.

Quick Update

March 5, 2012

Work/daycare/life is going well. We’ve found our groove and I’m even managing to get myself to work before 8:30 most days.

My pumping output is steadily declining. At first I was easily getting 24 oz in 3 sessions. Now I’ve added a 4th and am getting 16. This still covers what I need (baby girl is eating 12-16 per day) but it’s the trend that stresses me out. I do have a size-able stash (> 700 oz) so no risk of needing to add formula, but I’m kind of worried that if I under produce during the week, I will also under produce on the weekend and will need to supplement from the stash on the weekend as well. For now I’m working on the usual tricks – taking More Milk Special Blend, drinking tons of water and eating oatmeal.

I started Weight Watchers. No, I don’t think this is related to the supply dip. In fact that’s impossible considering that the decline began long before the Weight Watchers. So far, I haven’t lost much, but I haven’t been doing it very long either. The quality of food that I’m eating has definitely improved and I think that may actually help my supply (and waistline).

We’re also about to start the Total Money Makeover debt snowball and I’m excited. We bitch a lot about money and have decided it’s time to take control rather than complaining about not having enough but not really knowing where it goes either. I’m so ready for this change, and so is hubby. We’re racing through the book because we just want to get started!
