Forest Mill Neighborhood History

The Anderson Family formerly had a sawmill in these woods. We honored that history when we chose our neighborhood's name, Forest Mill.

Joseph W. Anderson along with his brother Francis D. Anderson each bought 40 acres to total these 80 acres around 1942.  It was all the money they had. They bought the acreage sight, unseen.  This property is in Section 16.  All Section 16's were given for the support of the schools.  So the property was completely logged and sold to support the schools.

Francis moved a small trailer onto the property, which they called home for quite a number of years. Joseph bought a home in Tacoma, but brought his family out to the property to play with the cousins, often.  One very hard winter Francis’s 3rd child became very ill.  He did survive, but life in the woods was rough.  So, they moved to a home in Des Moines, Washington.  Joseph rented out his home in Tacoma and they moved to Alaska around 1954-55 in order to find work. When Joseph and Marcella and their children came back to Washington in 1959, he rented a house in Seattle, but his dream was to have a sawmill and a lumber store on the property.  I am guessing that around 1966 Joseph began working on his dream.  Francis no longer wanted to be a part of the acreage ownership, so Joseph bought his brother's half for the then current value.  Joseph built a one-man sawmill in the back of the property.

He also built a one room 12' by 24' cabin.  He heated with a wood stove and the family brought in water in 5-gallon containers.

One of a pair of working Percheron Work Horses died, so the owner wanted to sell the other one.  Joseph bought the beautiful, big horse to work at the mill.  His name was Danny.  He stood 17 hands high.  They always had a dog or two on the property as well.

He and Marcella still owned the house in Tacoma.  Marcella and their 2 girls lived in Tacoma during the week and spent all weekends and all summer on the property.  They wanted their 2 children to be able to go to school in Tacoma. Around 1969-70 Joseph decided to pick up stakes and move his operation to the front of the property, out by the road where the houses are now located. Along with a lot of help, he put the cabin on 2 log skids and drug it through the woods with a dozer out to the front of the property.  He then moved the sawmill near the cabin.

The cabin and the sawmill were about where Lot 3, Plat 2 is located.  Danny pulled in many a log to the Mill.  Danny was a worker.  He knew it was much easier to pull a log in, if he ran.  And he knew where to take the log and when to stop.  Joseph would hook him up to a log and let him take it in.

From the time Joseph and Francis bought the property until it was renamed Forest Mill, the property was called Anderson Acres.  Not long after they moved to the front of the property, Marcella wanted a bit more comfort.  She was instrumental in acquiring a 30-foot mobile home.  She had a kitchen, a living area and a bedroom.  Sometime around 1976 Danny passed.  Then Joseph used a 1952 Willy’s Jeep and a Wisconsin Donkey (look it up) to pull the logs in.

Around 1994, Joseph and Marcella packed up, retired and moved back to their home in Tacoma.  Four years after Joseph died, Marcella and her two daughters started the process of platting the land. Because of the housing slowdown in 2008, the process came to a screeching halt but picked up again after a few years. With much sweat and a few tears, and every dime we had, the process was completed and you have some beautiful homes to live in, on some beautiful property.

Rita's Son Blair and his wife Holly, are building toward the back of the property. Their four children spend a few days a week there to help and explore.

Mr. Lance Scot Jackson

I was due on May 2, 2017. Archer's Birthday. But, I have always had my babies at 39 weeks and Archer was 9lbs, so we decided to be induced on April 25. We still had not chosen a name, so Blair and Grandma Darlene sat in the delivery room looking up and researching names. Once they started Pit, I was complete and ready to push in 3 hours. He came out with his arm up and I had to push more than I have had to with any of the other 3. He was born at 4:33pm, weighed 8lbs 6oz and was 20-3/4" long. We didn't settle on Lance Scot until the next morning. We love our Little Lance! He is healthy and happy, and we are so blessed.

2015 Reflection

It has been a great year. Being 30 was fun!

We bought a mini van I love. It's first adventure was to the Grand Canyon on Memorial Day weekend. It was freezing cold and rained most the time, but we made some good memories. I drove it 3,500+ miles through CA, WA, ID, UT, NV, and back to AZ-on my own with 3 kids and a dog! I really love our van and we are so blessed to have been able to get it, after the years I survived with my Saturn. We had WetnWild Passes over the summer and spent most of our days there or in our pool or a friend's pool.

I got braces! I also decided to have some fun with my hair and went blonde for 6 weeks, then back to brown with Blue steaks. It's been an exciting year for me.

Blair upgraded to a bigger, nicer plane - The Brasilia. Because of some of the worst timing, we ended up being apart June 13-August 12th. I left for the trip and he left for training a week before he was going to fly up to meet us in WA. He loves the new plane though, his schedule hasn't been super consistent, but they should have enough staff now that they will get a regular groove soon. With the upgrade, came a raise and that has been a great blessing, too. We both got to go on vacation to New York City! Alone! My parents came to Phoenix to stay with our kids and it was such a nice break. We enjoyed our time together to have fun and explore the city.

Charlotte started 2nd Grade and Daphne was in a new preschool. Both girls did tumbling and soccer this fall. Charlotte has developed a love for reading, so we have done all we can to fan that flame. Daphne is independent, fiesty, creative, strong, and hilarious.  Archer is getting faster and more daring. But, he is adorable, cuddly, a great sleeper and silly. Going to the gym daycare this last year, prepared him for Nursery at church, and he loves both. I love the break they both give me through out the week. His 3 hours naps are not half bad either.

Blair's sister Elke moved to Gilbert about 50 minutes away, and it has been fun to get cousins together! Birthdays, holidays and weekends are always more fun with family.

2015 I took a look at who I was as a 30 year old Mom and took the reins to control who I was. I've attended the gym regularly, become altogether healthier and more active. I listened to my supportive husband, and stopped putting myself on the back burner. I still forget to shower, feed myself meals, and drink enough water-because I'm making sure my kids are taken care of...but it's much less and I feel better about myself as a woman. I've slowly updated my wardrobe this year and got rid of clothes/shoes I've had for 10 and 15 years. I'm still crazy, low maintenance Holly...but I've found a balance that helps me feel energized and put together.

Happy New Year! I hope 2016 brings more fun adventures for everyone!
