Hi – I’m Jane Roper. I’m the author of  two novels, The Society of Shame and Eden Lake, a memoir, Double Time: How I Survived–and Mostly Thrived–Through the First Three Years of Mothering Twins, numerous personal essays and humor pieces, and a very eclectic Substack, Jane’s Calamity. I’m also a freelance copywriter, brand strategist, book coach, and editor. You could say I’m kinda busy, but I like it that way.

The Society of Shame

Anchor Books

In this timely and witty combination of So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed and Where’d You Go, Bernadette? a viral photo of a politician’s wife’s “feminine hygiene malfunction” catapults her to unwanted fame in a story that’s both an astute satire of social media stardom and internet activism, and a tender mother-daughter tale.

“Brilliant Satire…A novel that takes back shame while packing a funny and poignant punch. Astutely written, with the perfect balance of humor, heartbreak, and understanding.” —Kirkus ( Starred review)

“A hilarious romp through cancel culture, performative activism, and politics. [Roper] manages a fine balance between quippy humor and genuine emotion, and as Kat steps out of her husband’s shadow, the book becomes a woman’s journey of self-discovery and a mother-daughter story.”  —Booklist (Starred review)
