Eden Log, French Sci-Fi
Yet another sci-fi movie review. This was a french made movie and we all know how I hate the french. All bias’ aside, especially for sci-fi, this movie was in a word, confusing. Unlike most movies that leave the main character and audience clueless, Eden Log did so until the very end. When small revelations were given to our protagonist, Tolbiac, you could genuinely identify with his confusion because you were equally perplexed.
This was the darkest movie I’ve ever seen, I say darkest in a cinematography sense. Heavily muted colors with massive amounts of black dominating the film, for the first 15 minutes I thought it was in black and white. When I reviewed Pandorum, I thought that movie did well using the darkness as a tool. Eden Log put it to shame.
This movie failed mainly from its inability to successfully allow me to understand what the story was about, even AFTER I finished watching it. Once I’d done some quick research and comprehended the plot elements and events that happened, I will admit this could have been a really awesome movie. Unfortunately, maybe due to translation errors, it was not. I can see why it got poor reviews and practically no one has heard of it. It was done by a first time director (Franck Vestiel) with absolutely no known actors (at least here in the states).
Even if it wasn’t a good movie per-say, my love of good science fiction over-ruled it’s failings. The story had wonderful sci-fi elements and the plot was a commentary on various aspects of our society. This movie, in my view, criticized the socialistic ideologies that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few and that if the few must suffer that the many may live better, than so be it. Any good science fiction will contain an examination of society, Eden Log accomplishes this. Not a very good movie, but good sci-fi.
You can read a very good synopses of the entire movie here.
Techno Lusting for the Droid and it Does!
Ok, so I just discovered the Motorola Droid which will be released with Verizon as the carrier. Not that I care, cause I will jail break that thing the moment it comes out. The basic rundown is this: Android 2.0, BIGGER display and BETTER resolution than the iPhone, as WELL as a full QWERTY keyboard. OMG! This is the phone I’ve been waiting for. You can check the specs here. It seems this is the phone that will blow the lid off of Android and make Google the #1 contender as far as smart phone operating systems go. I have full faith that Google is on it’s rise to take over the world and how better to start than controlling global communications? I’m too excited, this is the Christmas present I want.
