Jul. 16th, 2024 01:26 pmI wasn't going to double up on fandoms in this meme, but in this case, I really can't resist. The vidder had me from "the bowling balls are bleeding!!"—and this could also double as "vid that made me laugh," because wow, does it. Just flawless song choice, comedic structure, rhythm, and A++ explosions. And elephants. And general mayhem. Not to mention amazing matches on things like the creaky wood sound when the trellis falls, CPR to the beat, sirens flashing to the beat, people screaming on the "aaahs!" the whistles blowing, etc. (Okay, FINE, I will watch more of this show.) Truly, better than a quad shot of fannish espresso.

True Detective is an anthology series, so each season stands alone. I was pretty into S1 (I have a thing for Woody Harrelson), then didn't care about S2 or 3, but then learned that Jodie Foster was going to be the star for S4. It is...as good as you could hope for, given that information, and FAR better. I picked this vid for this topic (motifs) because of how it uses the spiral, the polar bear, and so many other great touchstones from the show. (hands!)

And by ruh-roh, I mean trouble for me. We had an Interview with the Vampire panel at online Escapade this weekend, and between my making notes for the panel and exploring various things since...I may actually have a new ACTUAL fandom for the first time in a while. I'm currently re-reading The Vampire Lestat, listening to ALL the podcasts, rewatching episodes, looking for fic and vids...and actually making notes for fic! is this what fandom is like? I barely remember. (I've loved this show from the get-go, but now I actually want to write, and that's... new.)

I'm the biggest Cherry fangirl on the planet, or at least one of them. Everything she does lights the fire in me that loves fanvids, and this vid is no exception. I remember when it debuted at VividCon, it felt like an instant classic, and rewatching it today, everything still feels flawless and timeless. She is just a masterful, masterful storyteller, and there's nothing quite like watching one of her vids for the first time. They just get better on rewatch.

What don't I love about this vid? On a purely aesthetic level, I'm in awe of how confidently rhythmic it is, and how the vidder makes the most of a 4:3 source, using the juxtaposition of camera angles, framing, and flawless timing of internal action together with all the beautiful color palettes of the show (and the instrumentation of the song) to make a coherent whole out of episodes that were quite visually dissimilar. But more than that, the structural clarity takes my breath away, and fuses the many possible meanings of the song into a coherent and rich story of the three most important f/f relationships in Xena's history. I've never before seen or read a fanwork that weaves these three stories together so powerfully, and I can't imagine one that could. It makes me want to watch the whole show over again, yesterday.

Yes, I'm focusing a lot on vids that premiered this weekend at Vidukon, but just because I hope it gets them a little more exposure! In terms of interesting transitions. I literally exclaimed things like "WHAT" and "ARE YOU SERIOUS" when this premiered, and that was specifically about the transitions, which I adore. (I also don't go here, but goddamn, I really adored this vid.) Aside from how it makes the transitions a delightful part of its story, I also just adore this vid and want to basically live inside it.

This would have been a two-fer, butfindmeinthealps hasn't yet posted their Vidukon Time Loops vid as far as I can find. (Stay tuned!) The two vids made a terrific juxtaposition in the show, but even before I saw Alps's vid, I loved this one. Scene matching is A+, and the song made these seemingly unconnected sources meld into a seamless whole. (I wouldn't have thought Edge of Tomorrow would necessarily fit with these other sources, but thanks to the skill of the vidder and their amazing tone/lighting matches, I now realize tentacles are ironically hilarious.)
