winter peepers

Christmas is over...but it was fantastic while it lasted!

Cookies were baked and distributed...

Image

...and I flavored, split, and rolled special mini batches for us to enjoy a different Christmas cookie every night in the week leading up to Christmas.

Image

Todd had both a daily gift for Advent and a daily joke that he pulled from our wooden calendar with tiny little drawers.

Image

Todd bought me a special Die Hard advent calendar, too!

Image

On Christmas, I got up early and made a cinnamon roll...big enough to fit in a 9" pie pan.

Image

It was an easy, quick rise and I had plenty of time to bake and frost it before Todd was even out of bed!  A perfect Christmas morning treat.  I also made an accompanying apple compote.

Image

Then it was Christmas movies, games, and lots of eating all day long...in our pajamas!  So relaxing.  But Christmas is over and we've slowly been taking the decorations down...much to the dismay of the pets, who love posing in front of the tree.

Image

I've left a few things up that aren't explicitly Christmas, like this winter cross stitch I completed a few years ago.

Image

The weather sure hasn't felt Christmasy.  It's been so warm and hazy.

Image

There were a flurry of pictures on our township Facebook page when this warm front rolled in.  Here is a photo from our back yard!

Image

It reached almost 70 degrees, but what a drop!  Just a few degrees shy of breaking our state record for biggest temperature variance in a 24-hour period.

Image

We took advantage of the warm weather by hiking at one of our favorite winter spots, a nearby bog with a worn wooden pathway above it to help keep our feet mostly dry.

It was nice for a bit of spring weather - complete with our spring peepers chirping every day! - but hopefully we'll have more snow soon.

Have a great week!

It's beginning to look a lot like...

It's Christmas week and the snow has been glorious!

It got pretty cold...

Image

...but we all managed to stay warm!

Image

I love it so much!

Image

We had some birds at the feeder...

Image

...and MORE birds.

Image

The yard was criss-crossed with animal tracks...rabbit, deer, cat, and more!

Image

I wish it could be like this all winter long...

Image

...but the melt began a few days later.

Image

The snow's all gone now, and we'll be close to 70 degrees for Christmas!

At least we've had a ton of fun with it while we could.

Even those digging paths!  :)

Have a great week!

salty 'flakes and birthday cakes

It has been a busy month indeed.  I turned 50!  Todd worked in the freezing cold after I'd gone to bed to install a big plywood sign on the porch so that it would be the first thing I saw when I woke up.

Image

We had plans to hike at a national wildlife refuge about 90 minutes away, but the temperature dropped.  I don't mind winter hiking, but it has to be at least 25 degrees!  Now we have to consider Pepita as well.  She has a double coat, but her feet get cold quickly.

The roads weren't great either, so we decided to stay in.  We made salt dough ornaments...

Image

...played board games, listened to podcasts, and in general had a great snowed-in pajama day, complete with my usual homemade birthday brownie (and Todd had tracked down some Ben and Jerry's Oat of This Swirled ice cream!).

By the way, I highly recommend salt dough ornaments.  I used this recipe and it was so easy.  And look how pretty the ornaments are (you can see one of the big snowflake ornaments at the front of the Christmas tree)!

Image

We were able to get the tree just before the weather turned...the very same day that the storm came in.

Image

Pepita was unimpressed...

Image
See her on the couch in front?

...but all the pets like to congregate in front of it.

Image

Especially the cats.  We've got our bird feeders filled and they're permanently camped out at the window!

Image

Todd is our feeder filler.

Image

Image

Besides filling the feeders, we are keeping big piles of cat food around the property.  It's cold and there are a lot of strays out there.  We put a cat shelter (plastic tub with straw inside) in the entrance of our white barn and I was delighted to see (via trail cam) that not only are cats staying in it, our cat food has attracted possums to shelter!

Image

The snow is so pretty...it's been very wet, so it clings to the bare tree branches.

We generally have bright, sunny days after snow and it's just perfect.

Image

Lots of sleepy cats...

Image

Image

...and pups.

Image

In quiet moments, I've been reading and working on puzzles.

Image
the latest

I've completed 16 puzzles and read 88 books (35,452 pages) this year.  It's down quite a bit from last year's 110 books and 46,166 pages, but I lost a lot of free time with Pepita's midsummer adoption.  I'm just now starting to get free time back.  I haven't really worked on many textile projects this year, either...little knitting, embroidering, sewing, or quilting.  I'm hoping to make some big progress in many areas next year.  As this year winds down, though, I'm going to stick to my usual quiet comforts.

Have a great week!
