I had the opportunity to go on a spouse flight, held by Kevin's squadron. It's really awesome that they take the time to do this, because it was a cool experience! We flew over the Wilmington Coast of North Carolina, and and one point we were able to go up with the pilots, navigator and engineer. The first part of the flight was pretty uneventful...loud, but mostly what you would expect when on an airplane. Except in a C-130, you're sitting on something similar to a "net", in vertical rows along the sides and center of the airplane. It is pretty bumpy sitting in the seats in the back. For me, as I looked around, it was surreal to think of all the soldiers that have sat in those seats to go and do their duties at war. Then I started thinking about all those brave guys and girls who jump out of the plane!
When we headed to the coast, we started getting lower and the views were pretty amazing. We saw people sunbathing on the beach, HUGE houses along the coast and golf courses. Now remember, to see this, you have to stand up and look out the few tiny windows, while gripping whatever you can find to hang on to. I don't think the pilot was being too easy on us either...it was a pretty wild ride! I stood for a while, and then sat down when we were making out way back to the base.
Well, then it got a little more interesting. Apparently flying at those low levels and being jostled around (with essentially no window to constantly be looking out of) can make you pretty sick! I felt OK, but some of the girls had to break out their air-sickness bag. Fun stuff. I guess it's the experience that counts! And, it made us appreciate our hubbies and troops that much more.
Amy and I before our doom, er, I mean take off.
Shortly after take-off.
Jenn and I up front.
In Kevin's nav seat.
