2014 Wrap Up

The rest of 2014 went fast and furious, like life tends to these days.  We took the kids to Oklahoma City for a quick few days to meet some friends.  We did the River Walk downtown in 90 degree weather, followed by the Zoo, which was neat, but hot.  The next day we ventured to Frontier City and had a great time!  I can not believe how fast summer seems to fly by.

I was able to take a little girls trip over Labor Day Weekend up to Snowmass, while Larry held down the fort at home.  Everyone survived, but we did lose a cell phone to a swimming pool incident.

Carter played flag football again this fall and Larry was one of many coaches.  I love watching these boys play and have so much fun.  They have all improved since last year and there is nothing better then watching them hold up a pulled flagged, like it is a trophy.

Natalie is doing great health wise.  Her oxygen is still in the low 80s, but she seems to be okay.  She is loving 5 year old preschool and gymnastics with her friends.

I may have failed a little on the mom thing and just got around to having her birthday party in November (Oops).  She had a great time with friends and painting ornaments for Christmas time.

We start the holiday season off at Thanksgiving.  We took the kids on a short weekend to Dallas for the Gaylord Texan Ice exhibit and met up with the Watkins. We were schedule to head on into Texarkana for Thanksgiving, however Carter got the flu, so we headed back to Amarillo for a quiet Thanksgiving at home.

Carter turned 8 this year!  I can not believe how big he is getting.  Natalie told him, she thought his head was bigger.

We also had a little snow before the holidays, which always make it a little more Christmasy feeling.  Santa found our new home this year!

Still Here and Going Strong

I know it has been since March. I could come up with a million excuses, but I will just say one, life has gotten the better of me this past 6 months.

Get ready, here is the 6 month update...

NATALIE...
Natalie turned 5 in July!  I still can't believe we have been we have been blessed with her amazing strength and fight for life this past 5 years.  I look back and think, there is no way we went through all we have gone through with her.  She is truly a miracle and shows her beauty and strength daily.

Natalie just started 5 year old preschool this week.  We decided the best thing for her, was to give her one more year until kindergarten.  So she is the big kid on her campus this year.  She has been memorizing bible verses and sight words.

Natalie also learned to swim this summer!  She is still working on it, but is doing amazing for having no real strength.  We plan to continue swim lessons through the fall to help build muscle and just so she can exercise a bit, but have fun in the process.  She also started gymnastics too, which she has worn the leotard for a week straight. Yes, I pick my battles and that is not one I care about it, plus she look so stinkin' cute in it, because she is so tiny.

This past May, Natalie had a little graduation from Preschool 4's. I did cry like baby through the entire program, even though I know we had one more year before kindergarten, so chances are I will cry again this May.

She also had her ballet performance.  Make up and Natalie do not go very well together.  She is so fair complected with a hint of bluish-purple to it, that is makes it very difficult, not to mention, I do not wear a lot of make up.  She did great in her performance!  She had fought me on ballet class all spring about not wanting to go.  The day of the performance, she loves it and now dances around the house...who knows.

We went to Scottish Rite in June for Natalie's annual scoliosis appointment.  The curve in her spine has basically stayed the same over the past few years.  The curve can alter a little from year to year, by the way the stand, etc.  Overall though, she is doing great!  Our doctor, Dr. Richards, did say that more than likely at some point she will need rods put in her back, but we do not know when. My personal goal, would obviously to never have to have rods, but if she does, to not only have them put in once.  But for now, we just continue to monitor her from year to year.

She also had her annual cardiology appointment in August.  This was a big appointment, because we got wait a little over a year from her last appointment. Her echo and EKG looked wonderful, good blood flow.  She is also 30lbs, which is huge for her and has maintained for the past 6 months.  Her oxygen was low around 79-80 for some reason, so we go back in January for another appointment.  This is nothing to stress about it, we just need to monitor it to make sure she does not drop any lower.  The heat is hard on her in the summer, so I am hoping with fall around the corner, it will start cooling down a bit.

CARTER...
Carter had a fun and excited summer.  There is nothing better than starting your summer off with a broken thumb!  Carter broke his thumb in the last baseball game of the season.  Luckily, it was a good break (if there is a good break) and he just had to wear a stint for 6 weeks, but was still able to swim. The downside was he did not get to go to football, baseball or basketball camp.

He started the second grade!  I was looking at old pictures a few weeks ago and I am amazed at how big he is now.  He was adorable as a kid and kind of chunky, but now he is tall; still adorable when he wants to be, but other times, well he is a boy and 7 years old and strong.  Luckily, he still wants to snuggle and hold my hand.  I know that time will soon fade in the future, but I will take it as long as I can.

Carter has also started to enjoy the fun of being a kid growing up and all that goes with it.  He got braces in April on his top teeth.  He will have them for about 18 months and then have retainers until all of his baby teeth are gone, then will get another set of braces.  For some reason, orthodontists are doing 2 phases of braces vs the long, long 1 phase we all had as kids.

We also found out last week that Carter needed glasses; poor kid got my eyes and not Larry's (which are better than 20-20). Picking out frames with a 7 year old is, TERRIBLE!

THE FAMILY...
We finally moved in June!  We basically commuted the entire school year.  Now, I know all you that live in big cities, commute everyday and I am sorry you have to do that.  I was generally okay with it, but I had moments; like when I left Natalie's ballet tights at home and realized it was going to be easier and cheaper for me to go buy a new pair then drive home to get hers, because there was no time.  I lived out of my car.  I had snacks, drinks, baseball bag and clothes, ballet bag and extra clothes, because you just never know.  I was worn out by the end of the year and then we moved!

Moving is always fun, but super fun when you did not pack your stuff to begin with it and have furniture in storage for 4 years prior.  The movers dropped all of our boxes off one day and then told us that the screws to our dining room table and to the beds were in some box.  Let me give you and idea really fast about how many boxes we had...I did not pack remember.  We had one box that had 2 bowls in it and that is all, one with 5 neck ties and that is all and another with 8 plates.  All of our boxes were like that, so when someone tells you the screws you need are in a box and you have a 1,000 boxes it seems, what do you do?  You put you butt in gear and have a record unpacking time.  Best part is, after we opened the last box, we still did not find the screws...gotta love that.

Two days later we were in the garage looking around and Natalie asks for her pink basket on top of the refrigerator.  Larry first said, not now, but I said just give it to me.  Guess what??? Oh yes, the screws were right there!  Awesome isn't

We are finally almost settled and unpacked 3 months later.  Our yard however has seen better days.  We decided to wait until fall to lay the grass, so it will do better, which means right now it is dirt and looks nasty.  Oh well, we are those neighbors right now that do not take care of our yards, sorry.

We also went to the beach in July!  We drove to Florida and back.  I have to say, my kids did amazing for being in the car for 2 straight days; 5 states in one day.  That is right, Texas is a full day by itself.

Glowing Pink for Natalie

We have team set up on active.com or you can write it in the registration form, if you would prefer to mail it in.

Instead of t-shirts this year, Larry and I have decided to buy a ton of PINK glow sticks, bracelets, necklaces, headbands, rings and whatever PINK craziness we can find for everyone to wear.
But feel free to add to your outfit (the dollar store is a great place for glow sticks by the way).

Dribble, Shoot, Pass

I love watching these boys learn the game a basketball, but it is a little painful to watch a times too. Carter has definitely improved his skills and his love for the game this year.  He has even made a couple of baskets!

Run and Roar

Image

The National Mended Little Hearts put on a virtual run/walk this year.  I did not start a team or anything, because it was the first year and the first time for me to do a virtual run, so I wanted to see what it was all about first.

You had one week, the week of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week to run or walk 13.1 miles or for younger kids 1 mile.  You could run them all in one day or spread out your running however you pleased.

I signed up for the 13.1 miles and Carter signed up for the 1 mile.  I ran 6.5 miles + 3.6 miles +3 for a total of 13.1!  Carter ran his 1 mile all in one day.  I originally hoped he and I could run his mile together and it would be my last mile, but the weather and illness did not work out that way for us.

So proud of Carter and how hard he ran!  I had a great experience and next time will be setting up a team.  There is nothing better to run and know every time your foot hits the ground you are running for one of these kiddos fighting the fight of heart disease.  I can remember every one of Natalie's surgeries and all she has gone through and all she will still have to go through.  If that is not a motivator than I do not know what is.

We got super cool medals for participating

A Broken Heart but Fights with a Whole Heart

Thank you for all the prayers and support over the past few years for our family and for Natalie!  I truly believe she would not be here if not for the power of prayer...

Amarillo City Commissioner's Meeting

Every year our heart group, High Plains Mended Little Hearts, goes to the Amarillo City Commissioner's meeting to get the week of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness with announced as a Proclamation for the City of Amarillo for that week as well.

We have not actually made it to the meeting in the past due to illness or recent surgery, but we were able to make it this yea.

So proud to be apart of an amazing group of Heart Parents and kiddos!

Buzz the Bee

As a mom, I can not lie, I do not necessarily enjoy take home projects for the weekend.  I like to think my weekend is homework free.  I know, I know, it will only get worse as my kids get older.  However, as my kids get older, they can do all the homework themselves.  I feel like I am the one doing the homework.  Yes, I have a bad attitude, but that is probably, because I do not have a printer still, so having to print things is just not as easy as it seems.  One day, our life will be somewhat normal or will it?
Off of my soap box now. Natalie got to bring "Buzz the Bee" home for a weekend of fun!  We had to take pictures of Buzz, which means, Buzz got to go everywhere with us for 4 full days.  I am just happy we did not go out of town and were in town.  Then, we type a little deal of what all Buzz got to for the weekend.  So here is Natalie and Buzz's weekend together...

Image
Buzz the Bee got introduced into the world of Strawberry Shortcake

Image
Buzz the Bee got to hang out with Carter and Natalie and got to meet Gigi's dog, Rosie

Image
Buzz the Bee even got to play Hide in Go Seek in Gigi's bed

Last but not least, Buzz got to go to ballet with Natalie before returning to school the next day

Jump for Heart

This past week Carter's school, Puckett participated in the American Heart Association's Jump for Heart.  Carter jumped in honor of his sister.  Who better to jump for, then someone who has had 4 open heart surgeries and is just 4 years old.  Carter is an amazing big brother!

Happy 2014

May all your wishes and dreams come true in 2014!

I have learned to only make a few resolutions, because most of them never get filled, but I am going to do my best to check them off my list this year.  But most important, I will treasure the blessings God has bestowed on me and our family!
