We dropped the kids off Thursday morning and headed to Savannah. The drive to Savannah is so boring. Matt and the Caveman slept some. I didn't. But I was driving so that's good. We got to Savannah a little after noon and took Caveman to the Civic Center. We got him all checked in then left him at rehearsal and went to do a little shopping and get some lunch. Then we checked into our hotel. And we turned over our car to a valet that had a striking resemblance to Johnny Depp. We met up with Caveman when he had a break and took a walk around the historic district. Then he had pizza with his chorus friends and we walked him back to rehearsal. We stopped for gelato on the way. And it was delicious.
Matt and I had a late lunch and weren't ready for dinner so we wandered around town. The weather was so nice and Savannah is such a lovely city. We eventually decided to have dinner and found a Mexican place. My food was good. Matt's was not. At all. Good thing we had ice cream in our immediate future. We met up with Caveman and the rest of the group from our county and went down to River Street for a snack. And then...bed time.
The next morning we were up bright and early. Caveman had to be back at rehearsal at nine. It was raining so we went to the mall. We needed a memory card for our camera and an umbrella. Then it was our turn to pick up the kids from practice. We had lunch with everyone at The Pirate's House. It was a lot of fun. It's one of the oldest buildings in Savannah and the waitress told us some great stories. But the food wasn't great. The best part of lunch was when the waitress brought pirate hats. Caveman and his friends Caleigh and Aubrey had us cracking up.
Their Chorus teacher Mrs. Hauert gave them those awesome flip up sunglasses. And the fake mustaches were hilarious.
It quit raining while we were at lunch so we took the kiddos back to rehearsal and hit the streets. We walked down to River Street first. This was right across the street from our hotel.
We went down to Factor's Walk. Everything down there is OLD. I love all the history in Savannah. It fascinates me.
Factor's walk looking toward the Savannah Cotton Exchange.
I loved the cobblestone streets. Until I walked on them for a few hours.
I wish I would have taken pictures of more doors. Weird? I think they're cool.
These are facing the river a couple of stories up.
I don't think these are as old as the others but I love the red and white paint.
Matt took this picture. I loved this building. How it's been all patched up a few times.
A tiny alley.
This is me in a crystal ball in one of the shops.
Matt loved the huge freighters in the river. He took a bunch of pictures of them.
We got tired of walking on the cobblestones and decided to walk up Abercorn Street. I love the Squares that are every few blocks. The oak trees are amazing.
These signs are all over town. I think they're charming.
When we first arrived in town, I told Matt I wanted to visit the cemetery. He thought it was weird. But he went with me. There were a ton of people there. Proof that I'm not the only wierdo. We looked at several tombstones. There was a family tomb that had six babies that died in infancy. Made me feel grateful for vaccines and for the time that I live in in general.
One of many horses we saw(smelled). It was always fun to pick up little bits of what the tour guides were saying.
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
When we left the church we decided to walk back to the Civic Center. It was almost time for dinner break. We knew there was a movie set in the area. We had gotten stuck in traffic because of it earlier in the day. I took this pic through the windshield.
But we didn't really expect that we would walk right into it. We were walking and noticed the production trailers and the wardrobe tent. Then we turned a corner and the set was right there. So we watched Jim Caviezel make a movie for a bit.
We went and got our Caveman for his dinner break and we decided that none of us were hungry enough for dinner yet. We went back to River Street, did a little shopping, had some gelato, then took the boy back to the Civic Center. Matt decided that he couldn't take many more steps in his shoes so we went and bought him some more. Then we picked up the boy again and got some dinner. We let Caveman pick so we had Outback. After a late dinner and full bellies we were totally ready for bed.
Saturday was the big day. Caveman had one more rehearsal before the concert. We sent him off then got ready for the day and checked out of our hotel. We arrived a little early to pick him up so we snuck unto his rehearsal. Two hundred sixty of the best middle school voices in the state of Georgia.
I immediately had chills listening to those kids sing. We have been to several middle school chorus concerts in the past couple of years but they were nothing like what I was hearing. And I was very emotional and proud of him for working so hard to get there. It was just cool.
They finished rehearsal and we took off for our last meal in Savannah. At Loco's. We used to have a Loco's here and we miss it terribly. Then we took Caveman to get cleaned up for the concert.
We watched the Treble Chorus sing first. It was beautiful. And then we got to watch our boy sing in the Mixed Chorus. They sang six songs, in six different languages. The songs were beautiful and exciting and moving and so impressive. I really could not believe I was watching middle school children. It was amazing. The conductor, Mr. Can, was fantastic. Caveman loved him and learned so much from him.
We ordered a CD of the performance and I can't wait for it to get here so he can hear it. And I would have loved to stick around and hear the high school kids sing but I had four kids I was missing and ready to get home to. But what a great trip. Thanks Caveman, for being awesome. And thanks for letting your mom and dad tag along. We had a great time!
