I'm doing a lot of catching up since I have been so HORRIBLE about posting on our blog lately. We have had so many new changes going on, many of them fun, and a little bit stressful.
A couple of months ago I decided that, although I wasn't exactly ready for it, it was time to start potty training Wylie. I was running out of time, and I wanted to make sure I had her fully potty trained before the baby got here so that I didn't have to worry about potty training and taking care of a newborn at the same time. I also didn't want to have 3 kids in diapers. Two kids in diapers is more than enough. :-)
This being my first experience with potty training I was really nervous. I had no idea what I was doing. I found myself searching on the internet and asking everyone I knew what they thought was the best and most successful way to potty train. At first I was really intimidated because so many people talked about how much they hate the potty training process. Of course this is the last thing you want to hear or read about when you are about to embark on this adventure yourself.
I finally came across a great blog, (http://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2012/05/how-i-potty-trained-my-daughter-in-3.html) that talked about how they potty trained their daughter in just 3 days. After reading this woman's blog I decided that I was going to test her method. It seemed like the most successful, and stress-free way to do it.
We had gotten a potty for Wylie a couple weeks prior to starting the processes. We let her pick it out, and she decided to go with Elmo, of course. We talked about starting potty training, and got her familiar with the idea of it. She was really excited and eager to try, which helped me get excited as well.
We set the day that we were going to begin this 3 day training, and potty training in its whole. We went to the store and got a bunch of fun prizes, treats, let Wylie pick out a bunch of new panties, and activities to do while we are bunkered down in the house for the next 3 days.
Day 1: Let the fun begin! The first thing that morning I took Wylie into the bathroom, took off her diaper, had her try to go on her potty. We then talked about potty training and she got all excited when I told her we get to wear her big girl panties from now on, and now that she is going to be potty trained, no more diapers!! We tried to make the bye bye to diapers, and hello to panties a really exciting moment. Wylie seemed really excited about being a big girl. After we picked out panties we took her Elmo potty into the living room, and I told Wylie that we need to keep our panties dry, and any time she needs to go potty she needed to tell mommy, and go potty on her Elmo potty. Oh it all sounds so easy right... ha ha
I decided that I also wasn't going to do anything with pull ups or diapers. We were going to be strictly in underwear, even for naps and bedtime... I decided the first few days we are really learning about the potty we would just skip naps all together.
So here we are the first day of potty training and I am anxiously waiting for Wylie to have an accident. After the first hour I started asking her if she felt like she needed to go potty. She kept telling me No, and I didn't want to be too persistent, but I was getting so anxious, and she had drank a lot already. All of a sudden while we were watching a movie Wylie spun around really fast, and gave me the most priceless look. I asked her if she needed to go potty and she nodded her head. I told her to hurry and sit on her potty, and as she ran all of a sudden I saw a little bit of pee running down her leg. Oh man... So close. :-) She sat down and finished going potty on her little toilet. Even though it wasn't perfect, we had our first semi-successful potty experience. Wylie was really excited when she saw how excited I was that she went in her toilet. We cleaned up, picked a prize, and talked about how good she did and next time to go to her potty and tell mommy before she starts going potty in her panties. She kept saying "Don't get my underwear wet." I knew there was going to be little accidents, so I am glad we bought a lot of underwear. Throughout the rest of the first day, she was doing really good, but unfortunately we just couldn't quite keep our underwear completely dry. She would tell me she needed to go potty, but would start going just a little bit too early so it would get in her panties. I was starting to feel a little bit discouraged, but I knew I couldn't give up now. The night came, we stopped giving Wylie anything to drink 2 hours before going to bed, and told her if she needed to go at night to come and get mommy or daddy so we could go in the potty. I was nervous, but I didn't want to confuse her by putting a pull up or a diaper on at night.
We all went to bed, and around 3 in the morning Wylie came into our room and woke me up asking to go potty. Of course I figured she had probably gone in her bed, but when I took her to the bathroom she was completely dry. I checked her bed, dry! YAHOO!!! Even though it was the middle of the night, I felt like I had to at least give her an M&M. I was so excited and proud of her. She got back into bed, and I told her if she needs to go again to come get mommy again. She didn't get up in the middle of the night again, but that morning when she woke up, she came and got me and we went potty. Again, she was completely dry! The part that I thought was going to be the hardest so far had been the easiest part. :-)
Day 2: The next day went so much smoother than the first day. Throughout the day she was telling me that she needed to go potty, and ended up only having a few accidents the entire day. Luckily so far, even the first day, we didn't have any poopy accidents. Wylie was really enjoying being a big girl and I was loving not changing 2 diapers all day long, and thinking of the money I would be saving... well at least for the next few months before our new baby was going to be here and I got to start that all over again. :-)
Day 3: Wow I can't believe we have done so well so far, Wylie has done amazing! Throughout all of day 3 we only had one accident, and still no accidents at night.
We started getting back into our regular routine of things. Everything had been going well, and then all of a sudden Wylie started to have accidents. AHHH!!! We were doing so great! I found myself having to ask her a million times if she has to go to the bathroom, and cleaning up pooped in underwear. This was not what was supposed to happen. I figured that we would have occasional accidents here and there, but not race to the bathroom accidents. I decided that I would have to revert back to reward for telling me when she has to go potty, and even consequences for accidents. That worked out nicely... It didn't take long for her to be back to telling me when she had to go to the bathroom and not having accidents. I think she just got lazy and was testing me. Luckily we fixed that quickly. I don't know what I would have done if she would have continued to have accidents. There was no way I was going to put her back into diapers.
Although we have had our ups and downs with the potty training experience, it has over all been a good experience, and a lot less terrifying than I thought it would be. Since Wylie has been potty trained we have even gone on a couple of road trips. I was terrified that she would have an accident in the car, but we decided that we would take her little potty with us, and keep it in the car. That way if she really needed to go to the bathroom, and we could pull over at any time, and she could comfortably go to the bathroom. I am glad we brought the potty because it got used a couple of times. And..... NO ACCIDENTS during either of our trips. Our little girl is amazing! I am so very proud of her, and it has been nice only have 1 in diapers over the past couple of months. I guess I better enjoy that while I can right?!? :-)
