My First Race

I know this is totally late posting, it happened over 4 months ago. But I didn't want to forget documenting my first race. I know it is totally lame that I was so proud of myself, because I have lots of friends that run 1/2 and full marathons on a regular basis and totally put me to shame. But I have never considered myself a runner. I mean I have run a couple of miles here and there on a totally non-consistent basis over the years, but I've never trained for anything and I've never kept up the running this long. There is a 10K race called the Bolder Boulder every year on Memorial Day, up in Boulder (hence the name). Some 50,000 people or so participate every year, it's quite a big deal. The finish line is after a partial lap in the CU Football Stadium, so that is pretty cool. Well, I did it, I loved it, and I am ready for more races. I would love to do a 1/2 marathon sometime. . .but maybe next year when we get back into warm weather. I have enjoyed running, but I am definitely a fair weather runner and escape to the treadmill when it gets too chilly outside. I did the race with a few friends - thanks to Laurel for motivating us all to do it! We rode the bus up and back together, and had a great time. I reached my only goal of finishing under an hour - 58:48 I think to be exact - so I was happy. This is for sure something I will do again.

Bus Ride up at 5:30 in the morning. . .bus driver was a bit confused. . .couldn't find the race. . .we missed our start time. He only had one job - to get us to the starting line - but couldn't seem to figure it out.

Busy Summer

It is 47 degrees and raining outside today, fall is officially here (although today almost feels a little like winter). Puts me in the mood to curl up under a blanket and eat soup, rolls, and pumpkin cookies. Paul is out of town in DC at his brother's house, so it has been a quiet weekend. So I am sitting down to play some catch-up. All the writing here is for my own journaling purpose. Probably a little boring to anyone looking at this. So feel free to just browse the pictures and move on if you want! :)
We had a crazy summer filled with fun times with family, lots of days at the pool with friends, many tears and emotional moments, several weeks away from home, and about 5,000 miles logged in the car over 6 weeks. Thank goodness for portable DVD players, without that we would NOT have made it. Dylan was a ChAmP in the car all those hours. As long as he had his movie, a snack, and a potty break every once in a while he hardly made a peep!
We left the middle of June with a 2 week trip ahead of us. The first week to be spent in Page with Paul's family, and the 2nd week in Utah with mine. Paul's mom was very sick with cancer, so much of the time in Page was spent trying to help his dad out with whatever he needed. He had spent the past few months hardly leaving the house because she needed 24 hour care, and he was doing it mostly on his own. So I did a lot of dishes and housework, and spent a lot of time taking care of my mother-in-law. It was nice to spend some time there, and hope that I was in some way a little bit of relief for Paul's dad if nothing else. We did get out to the pool to swim a few times, and hit Lake Powell with some jet-skiis one day with some friends. It just isn't a real trip to Page without getting out on the lake a little!
After our week there was over, we said our good-byes and drove to Utah. We met my family there at my sister & brother-in-law's cabin outside of Park City for a little relaxation time. While there we rode 4-wheelers & motorcycles, spent a lot of hours swimming, sat around the fire laughing late into the night, and of course ate a lot of good food. My mom always does an incredible job with food when we are around - all the yumminess you could ever want!
Image
Dylan LOVED riding the 4-wheelers. My sister brought their small ones too, so there was one his size that he could ride by himself. Not sure where the pictures are. . .on Paul's laptop in DC I think. But it was super cute, and he had a blast!

Dylan and his cousin Roman both fell asleep multiple times while out on a ride. I guess there was something soothing about it! And they were playing hard every day, rarely getting to bed before 11pm, so they were always tired!

While we were at the cabin, Paul got a phone call from his Dad saying that he needed to come back to Page. His mom was not doing well at all. So he drove back to Page the same day that we all drove back to Orem to my parent's house. We missed him for the rest of the week, but know that he needed to be where he was. He got to spend a few days with just his dad and siblings, saying good-bye to his mom.
Image
We spent the 4th of July at my parents, and got up early to go see the hot air balloons launch. I am not a morning person, so it is always so hard for me to get up for that. But once we are there, it is totally worth it to see how magical it is for the kids. We were there in time to watch all the balloons get blown up, and then see a few launch. Unfortunately it was too windy for too many of them to go in the air.

(I had a huge cold sore on my lip - hence the retarded smiling!)

We hit Cafe Rio, and then a little bowling before we went to see fireworks. It was some serious competition, we had prizes and everything. Such a blast! :)

Dylan had soooo much fun climbing all over and wrestling with grandpa! Such a little boys dream to have a human jungle gym that wiggles and bucks you off, and even tickles on command! Thanks dad for letting him beat on you a little.
We came home to Colorado after a busy and fun 2 weeks, and then Paul's mom passed away 1 day later. So it was back in the car again to go to the funeral. It was a very sad and hard time, but everything went well. Then we finally made it back home again exactly 1 month after we first left. Not exactly what we had planned, but life never is right? We miss Kathy, such a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother. We are all better for having known and loved her.

Preschool

I haven't posted forever, and I hope that one of these days I will make time to catch up with this thing. That day isn't today, but I wanted to post a few pictures of Dylan's first day of prechool. We have been talking about it all summer trying to get him excited, and hoping he wouldn't cry when I left him.
Well, it worked. He has been SuPeR ExCItEd for the past few weeks and we have had a successful week and a half in school so far. He loves to wear his Woody & Buzz backpack, and gets so excited to pack his snack everyday.
I can't believe my little boy is even old enough for preschool! I kinda hate him being away. It just reminds me of how much time I DoN't have left with him before he is in school all day. But this kid NeEdeD something so bad to help liven up his routine. We get together with friends several times a week to play, but it just didn't seem like enough for him. Poor guy has no one at home to play with but mom, and I guess that is just too boring. He is so social and is loving being a 'big kid' and going to school! And he looks so stinkin' cute with his backpack on! I love it.

Image

He asks me to comb his hair in a mohawk every day. . .so cool.

Thanks Southwest Airlines!

We came back from Christmas and went through withdrawals from not being with family. Dylan didn't know what to do with himself all day with only me to play with. I always like to get home from a long trip & get back into my 'every day' routine and schedule. But it is always hard those first few days home. I miss the house full of people, and the noise and chaos that comes when we all stay under one roof. Luckily we only had a couple of weeks before we had visitors at our house. . .thanks to Southwest Airlines. A month or so before, Southwest ran a smokin' deal on airfare between here and Salt Lake. I texted all my family members in Utah and told them about it, letting them all know they would be welcome to come see us anytime. It was successful! We were lucky enough to convince Ashlee & Jeff to come visit one weekend, and Grandma & Grandpa to come the next.
It was Ashlee & Jeff's first time to our house. We took them to a Nuggets game-my first one, even though I have lived here for 8 years-sad I know. Our seats were terrible. We were up about as high as you can get in the Pepsi Center. I think there were only 3 rows higher than ours. But the entertainment up at that level can't be beat. Who needs an exciting basketball game when you have crazy drunk fans around you? I really coudn't even tell you who won the game, I was so distracted by all the people around us.

They also got to experience taking Dylan to Chuck E Cheese. We all had a good time, and of course the D-man was in H-E-A-V-E-N.

The day they flew home, we got up super early and went out for some YuMmY breakfast at the Original Pancake House, then went straight to the airport from there. When we got to the airport, Jeff asked Dylan if he wanted to go get on the airplane with them. Of course he said yes. So they carried him into the airport, he was so HaPpY to go with them. When they got inside they said just kidding, and came back out to the car again. He immediately started crying because he wanted to go with them! Needless to say it was a rough drive home, he was so sad to see them go. Can't wait until the next visit guys!!
The following weekend, Grandma and Grandpa came to visit. They were nice enough to come spend a few days, and then took Dylan back to Utah with them on the airplane so Paul and I could go to Hawaii! I think Dylan wore them out by constantly asking them to read books, do puzzles, & play games with him. He was Grandma's BFF all weekend, he didn't want to leave her side!! I'm glad he latched onto them so easily and quickly. It made it much easier to watch him disappear (or misappear as Dylan would say) into the airport with them, knowing I wouldn't see him for 2 weeks.

I am slowly but surely getting caught up with our lives here. Hopefully it won't be August before I get any Hawaii pictures posted!

Holidays. . .Finally

It has been way too long since I have updated our blog. So here is my attempt at a quick recap of the things we have been up to for the last 6 months.

  • We spent Thanksgiving in Dallas with Paul's family. It was soooo nice to be in warm weather for a few days. Dylan had his first experience at Chuck E Cheese, and will never be the same. He L-O-V-E-D it! We ate lots of food, played lots of video games (Paul did at least), and had lots of fun! For some reason, I have zero pictures of that trip. Not sure what happened there.
  • We were in Utah at Grandma & Grandpa's for 2 weeks at Christmas. I think December can be the most magical time of year, especially when there are little kids around. I tried to minimize the stress, and just savor every moment. We had fun making sugar cookies, playing in the snow, having LOTS of fun playtime with cousins, & staying up late like we were teenagers watching movies & playing games. We acted out the nativity on Christmas Eve, costumes and all. Paul made a pretty handsome donkey, let me tell you. :) Dylan was really excited for Santa - he started to get it this year - and couldn't have been more excited when he woke up on Christmas morning to his toy bus. Don't ask me why he wanted one, but that is the only toy he ever said he wanted from Santa. It was such a fun trip, we started missing everyone the minute we headed back to Colorado. Can't wait to do it again!

We LOVE company!!

My sister Amy and her husband Robbie came to visit a few weeks ago. We always love having people come see us. We had lots of fun eating out, watching movies, and relaxing. Amy and I got brave in the kitchen one day and made caramel apples (with homemade caramel) while the boys played the Wii. We realized that we aren't Betty Crockers, because the caramel turned out a little too runny. It didn't set up quite right, but it still tasted YUMMY!! Thanks for coming guys-was sooooo fun to have you!

Image

Image We took Dylan to the pumpkin patch along with 2 million other people in Denver that day. It was so miserable because it was so crowded. After waiting in line for 45 minutes just to get in, we spent about 30 minutes there and left because we were so annoyed. We didn't even get a pumpkin there. . .it was a total waste of a day.

Weekend Away

I just have to post real quick about what an AWESOME husband I have. For my birthday he had given me a 'weekend away' that we were finally able to use in October. We left Dylan with our good friends Whitney & Jake and headed up to Boulder. He got us a room at a really nice hotel & spa. We went to dinner, walked around the shops a little (it started snowing on us and was FREEZING so that didn't last long), relaxed, SLEPT IN, & went to breakfast. Then he left me at the spa for the rest of the day while he went to pick up Dylan. I had a massage, a facial, and a pedicure. It was absolute heaven!!! It was so nice to spend some time alone with Paul and to get pampered at the spa! Thanks for a great weekend!!
