I don't know about the rest of the world, but this Christmas snuck up on me at lightning speed. I hate to admit that I was not ready, though I feel I had a few really good excuses - one being a sweet chubby faced, melt your heart little boy. In spite of the craziness and the stress, I got my act together and our family enjoyed a very nice Christmas. We LOVED having the Lovells here to celebrate with! (Have we mentioned how glad we are that they moved here). Our traditional celebrations prior to Christmas included caroling, lots of baking, being secret Santas, a traditional Finnish meal, more baking, preparing gifts, delivering gifts, and reading lots of Christmas stories. Curly participated in a Children's Christmas Choir and we enjoyed watching her perform at several events.
Each year the kids draw names and get each other a gift. This year
Curly decided to make a gift for Spud. With a little help from me, she
sewed a soft felt "toy" box for him to hide his toys in. We enjoyed
working on this simple project together.
On Christmas Eve, we shared the traditional German dinner with Lovells. We ate Rouladin, spaetzle, rotkohl, bunter salat, rye bread, and german cheesecake. Oh yum! It was fun (and really nice) to have someone to split the menu with and more importantly share the food.

We had enough people to have a reading and performance of the Nativity. Maybe not the most reverent nativity ever performed, but certainly memorable.

I always hope that Christmas morning is as anticipated and memorable for my children as it was for me. The rule at our house is that you can't leave your room until mom or dad comes (which makes it easier for parents to get a little more sleep). I think we made it until 6:30 before the excited voices could be heard throughout the house.
Another tradition is the family treasure hunt to find the "family gift." Growing up, these treasure hunts were always written in rhyme and usually integrated one or more family chores (shoveling snow, taking care of the dog, etc.) We have continued the tradition, though not always in rhyme. The girls were not very happy about having the empty the dishwasher, and they weren't very excited about the new computer that was the family gift, but they were thrilled about the soccer ball! Funny kids.
On Christmas afternoon we went to the Lovell's for a delicious classic Christmas dinner. The kids played and we exchanged gifts before heading home. It was a nice, low-key day. Perfect preparation for the business for the rest of our holiday break.
