Chase's Surgery went well!

Hi there everyone-
Chase's surgery is done and everything went really well. It only took an hour which was less than we thought. Basically we walked with him down a hallway and then kissed him goodbye and the anesthestiologist carried him into the OR. We both felt that everything was going to be ok. After an hour Dr. Motoki came into the waiting room to tell us that it was done and that he was in recovery. After 30 min. passed I told Dustin that something was not right because they should be calling me to go back by now (they only let one parent back at first). Finally they called me back and I could feel myself shaking as they took me back. Some of my training and experience in the recovery room was helpful, but there is nothing like going through it with your own child. The nurse told me that when they brought him out they couldn't get him to breathe and they had to bag him for 15 min! When I worked at the Surgical Center I have seen that happen a few times and it is a scary thing. So after she told me that, I was a little sick. They were wary to give him pain meds because they were afraid he would quit breathing again. But, the nurse gave him a little and we watched him closely. After 15 min. they moved Chase to another room and finally Dustin could come back to see him. We spent most of the afternoon taking turns holding him. He is ok as long as he has pain meds in him. He had long stitches in his tongue just in case the nurses needed to pull his tongue out of his airway. They took them out in the morning right before we left. He has arm restraints on so that he won't put anything in his mouth. Other than that he is doing really well. We are so happy to have his mouth fixed!

Just a quick update- Chase's surgery is scheduled for 10:45 on the 22nd. It is a little later than we would have liked, but what can ya do? He can have formula up until midnight and Pedialyte until 7:45 a.m. then nothing after that! I hope they give him a little sedative after they get his IV started so he doesn't realize how hungry he is! He will stay the night and then check out at 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. We will be there for less than 24 hours which is good. We will update you when we get home on the 23rd.

Monday July 14, 2008

Hi everyone,

We are just getting started on learning how to do this blog thing! We are getting ready for Chase's surgery on July 22nd and figured this would be a good way to pass along info. Chase will have his soft palate repaired and a hard palate prosthesis placed as well as tubes put into his ears. He will be up at Primary Children's for hopefully only one night. The kids are enjoying their summer. They love going down to Grandma Johnson's to swim in Amy's pool.
