Our 2011 Christmas Letter

I am totally not getting Christmas cards out this year like I planned.  So you will have to read our 2011 Christmas Letter on the blog.  First off, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas.  We hope this year has been filled with good experiences for your family with many more to come in the new year.

We have had a great year and are enjoying life.   This year we ended the summer by taking a family vacation to Yosemite to attend the Strawberry Music Festival.  We heard some great bluegrass music and loved having Grandma and Grandpa Padgett with us.  Many would say we were crazy to take four small children camping, and they'd probably be right, but a great time was had by all anyways:)

For a few years now, Jason has been searching for a fun family car and finally came upon "the one".   It's a 1968 Mercury Commuter (station wagon).  The previous owner took great care of it but we are glad there are still a few things Jason can work on with the kids.  The kids adore riding in it and Liam calls it, "Daddy car.  Varooom!"  (It's so loud you FEEL the sound of it a block away!)  This year Jason switched his specialty in the Army to Simulations and he is excited to begin working in this field.  In November he was promoted to Major and we are very proud of his hard work, service to his country and diligence in providing for his family.  It was wonderful that we live close to family and so many could come enjoy the promotion ceremony with us.  As a promotion gift to Jason, his wife and father, wanted to honor the long tradition of military service in Jason's family. To do so, they had the names of Jason, his father and his grandfathers inscribed on a plaque at the Verteran's Plaza in his hometown, Simi Valley, CA.

Natalie has learned a lot this year about depending on others and is especially grateful for the generosity and kind heart of her mother.  With the long pregnancy and birth of our 4th child there have been many physical challenges for her this year.  Grandma Barbara became a permanent fixture at the Fort Irwin home for a while and we are very grateful for her loving service to our family. Thankfully the challenges are quickly fading and Natalie is looking forward to feeling, and looking, "normal" this next year:)  Natalie has also learned how much she missed creativity in her life.  She was able to attend a High School Choir Reunion and enjoy good friends, good music, and good times!  After a two year break, she has recently renewed her interest in paper crafting and cooking.  She blogs her creations at findingmystamp.blogspot.com and findingmyrecipes.blogspot.com.  Her newest creative outlet has been digital scrapbooking.  As she is not technically inclined, it was difficult to get started.  She entered a contest to motivate herself to try this new medium.  After submitting the first two projects she made, Natalie became a finalist in the contest.  It was very exciting for her to achieve something in this new field of self discovery.  She has also begun working with the Young Women's (Youth) program at her Fort Irwin church group and thankfully is enjoying it.  However, no matter what is going on, her favorite thing to be is "Mom".  It's a messy, stinky, and exhausting road to the most precious filled moments life has to offer her.  Good thing she loves every minute.

Ilana is in the 4th grade and doing great.  She enjoys school and continues to have an adventurous and sweet personality.  She began playing the trumpet with her school band and also joined Girl Scouts, something she has wanted to do for a while now.  This summer she took Tae Kwon Do lessons and ice hockey lessons.  Yes, ice hockey, not ice skating.  She revels in being a tom boy.  She also took swimming lessons and was able to pass the level she was at by swimming the length of the pool and back without a break.  Next year she wants to try horse back riding.  She is a fantastic helper with her three brothers and we are so grateful she is apart of our family.

Jackson's exuberant personality continues to delight and surprise us at every turn, and then some.  Natalie is convinced he will single-handedly make her into a great mother some day, whether she wants him to or not.  Jack is in 1st grade and extremely verbal, thankfully this is what his teacher likes most about him.  He continues to dream of being an inventor and we believe he will make it come true some day.  He loves non-fiction, bugs and the sciences.  His curiosity is taking him places and we continue to channel his amazing amount of energy into positive avenues.   May the force be with us!

Liam began this year as our sweet little "yes" man.  He would do anything we asked with a skip in his step.  He is ending 2011 as our sweet little "no" man.  He is a full blown toddler with the immediate "no" response going strong.  We have found that if he says "no" to doing something, we simply have to ask one of the other kids to do it and he jumps right up to take care of the issue.  Ah, the power of sibling rivalry at it's best.  He really does still love to "help" (why yes, that is the bottom dishwasher rack he is "driving" around the living room), but of course it has to be his idea.  He does dishes, sanitary waste removal and laundry quite often.  Natalie is grateful for his "help" no matter how long he makes it take.  Liam has shown a natural tendency to tease at a very early age but thankfully also shows a caring side.  When the kids are in trouble or hurt he runs over to make sure they are okay then badgers the Mom until she checks on them.  He adores all things horses, trains, corn on the cob and Cinderella (there is a horse in the movie).  We look forward to the delight, or possible trauma, of his first Disneyland experience.

Greyson Xavier joined our family in April and has been an absolute delight.  He was 9 pounds 9 ounces and has continued to be our biggest baby by far.  At 8 months old he is wearing 18 month clothes.  Ilana has nicknamed him "peanut" because he is so cute but "tank" might be a better descriptive.  He is easy going and smiles at any little attention from the bigger kids.  Thankfully no one was jealous of Grey when he was born, even Liam, and he has fit into this group like a champ.  He fills our days with sunshine and nights with a good sound sleep.  He has his two bottom teeth and is beginning to crawl and explore his surroundings. Watch out world.

We have enjoyed our time in California near family and we look forward to one more year here.  Then it is off on another Army adventure.  We are grateful for the experiences and employment the Army has afforded us.   No one wishes for peace more than those called into battle.  During this new year, we hope for peace in your homes, our countries and abroad.  (Yes, I said it, World Peace:)

With much love, The Cannon Family
Jason, Natalie, Ilana, Jackson, Liam and Greyson

12 Things Happy People Do Differently

As I looked at facebook the other day, my friend Kathryn had linked to an article called, "12 Things Happy People Do Differently".  I took a look and loved it.  If you are interested to see what you are, or aren't, doing to be happy here is the link:
http://www.marcandangel.com/2011/08/30/12-things-happy-people-do-differently/

A few years ago I wrote a blog post about being happy entitled, The Truth About Happiness.  I was excited to see a few things I had written also made the article's list.  The most interesting thing to me was the mention of several things we can do that release the same amount of hormones as some drugs, but does a better job.  The human body is amazing.

Just thought I would share the article with you all.  Here's to a happy holiday season.

Age Appropriate

Greyson is one smart cookie.  I'm so glad he is mature enough to choose age appropriate toys and teething material.  Case in point:

The bottom of the stroller basket.  Cleanest surface I can think of for teething.  Makin' the mama proud.
Image
Voltron Force action figure.  Nope, no small parts here to choke on!
Image

Billy the Bass, Christmas singing fish extraordinaire.  Massages as the gums as it entertains the whole family.  Over and over again.  (Big sigh) Awesome.
Image

(On a non-sarcastic note, this used to be Grandpa Obuchon's and Jason brought it down from his house after the funeral.  Liam ADORES this wall hanging and plays it often, very often.  Always makes us smile and think fondly of Grandpa Obuchon and how much fun he was.  Okay, back to the sarcasm.)

White plastic blinds we have to pay for if we break with complimentary strangulation cords attached.  Fun and stylish!

Hard metal dog crate gate with sharp ends and finger pinching hinge, plus disgruntled dog.

(Usually he grabs it at the opening and has no problem controlling where it goes.  The other day he grabbed a hold of it by the hinge and banged himself in the head three times before I could run over and rescue him.  He wasn't pleased with my uncontrolled laughter.  Anytime he is upset or he wants me to fix something for him he cries, "Mamamamamamamamamamamama!"  Too cute he's calling me by name but he only says it when he is in distress.  He does say "Dadda"  sometimes but only when he is happy and babbling.  That totally goes along the lines of our other kids too though.  They all love Daddy until something is wrong.  Then they want their Mama.")

Beautiful streamline plastic potty complete with cranky potty training two year old.  (You  may think this potentially embarrassing photo of Liam is quite mean of me to post.  However, he made me have a c-section two years ago and deserves anything, and everything, I can dish out in the next 20 years.  Game on brother!)

I'm glad we spend so much money on safe, age appropriate toys considering Greyson's personal preference lends toward the scary.  He is growing so much so fast.  This last week he began saying the very cute "Ah? Ah?" that can be heard from Jack Jack on The Incredibles.  This morning, he also began to crawl with the low army, slither, foot scoot that is the predecessor of a true crawl.  It was so cute, he is getting so big.  Soon enough he won't be my little baby anymore!!  Happy 7 1/2 month unbirthday baby.

Little Boys

I just love watching Greyson sleep.  He is so sweet.

Here he is trying to get me to stop bugging him with the flash on my camera.  Good luck buddy.

Liam is growing up so much.  He totally thinks he is a big guy and wants to wrestle so bad.  Luckily Grey loves the attention and thinks it's funny.  Tonight Ilana and Liam were wrestling.  Jackson ran over and dog piled on top of them.  Greyson was sitting on my lap and got so excited he practically jumped off my lap.  He really wanted to get in on it!  I've decided that I need a padded room where nothing can break and kids can bounce off the walls.  It should come standard in any home where more than two boys reside!

Here are a few pictures of my littlest vampire.  He drank a smoothie and ended up looking like this.  :)  Boys are so gross.  Then, he didn't want to take a bath.  Nice try bud, baths do come standard with gory smoothie eating.

He loves Ilana's fluffy pink slippers.  So funny this boy.   He drags around a few little blankies like Linas on Charlie Brown.

Ilana's First Trupet Recital

Image

Image
Ilana has been playing the trumpet all year.  She had her first recital last week.  So cute.  She did a great job.  They sounded terrible of course but it was still fun to see her up on stage.

Liam had a hard time sitting still.  He was still the cutest thing.  I love when he puts his hands in his pockets and looks all relaxed.

Grey didn't make a peep the whole time.  Such a good baby!

Funny Little Kids

Some random photos of my funny little kids.

It's weird what kids consider comfortable.

Jackson made himself a tool toy belt.  This kid has some creative juices flowin'.

Why yes, he is wearing two sets of pj's.

Mini Batman sword?  Check.  (Those always come in handy).

Here is Ilana getting in on the knight action.

Grey was getting so tired he just plopped down where he was.

Helping mommy with dishes and making a bigger mess in the kitchen.  Awesome!

Greyson and eating, or not.

Image
Grey hasn't shown any interest in eating real food.  He's 7 months old now.  The first time we tried rice cereal, he gave us dirty looks.  Second time he put his tongue at the front of his mouth and wouldn't let any food in, period.  Third time, I tried banana's.  More dirty looks combined with raspberries.  Fourth, Grandma Barbara tried to get him to taste a piece of apple.  Even dirtier looks and a puckered face.  Then today I think, "It's been awhile.  He'll want to eat now."  Rice cereal again.

Yeah...... I think I'm wearing most of it.  He isn't giving me dirty looks anymore, they are smiles of delight after he raspberries the food all over me.  Punk.  I'm starting to wonder about this kid.

Any suggestions on what food to try next?

Family Togetherness

Image
The other night Daddy was home and we were all able to read together on Mommy and Daddy's bed.  Gotta love story time, especially when Daddy is with us.  Every now and then we are reminded of the RLBT (Ridiculously Long Business Trip=Deployments) that are always looming on the horizon that is the Military Family.  One of the benefits of a RLBT (yes, there are some, you just have to look long and hard for them) is how it makes you enjoy and appreciate the everyday time you can spend together as a whole family unit.

Laps around the living room.

Greyson has come up with an interesting workout routine.  He balances on his tummy and lifts his arms off the floor.  It looks like he's trying to swim.  I've never had a kid that liked being on his tummy this much.  So cute.  He's gotten up on his knees and rocked once or twice but he still rolls where ever he wants to go.  Or not go, his sense of direction isn't too keen yet.  He gets stuck in corners a little too often.
