The Joys of Progression

Image

The big news in the last couple of weeks is that Robbie turned the mighty and all-powerful 12 years old and has started junior high. More importantly, he has received the Aaronic Priesthood. This is something that he has looked forward to for a long time and we are so happy for him. On September 7th Tom and Sandra came down to honor the occasion. We were all allowed to attend the priesthood opening exercises with Robbie. When they asked if there was anyone new in the congregation, Robbie popped up. We thought he was going to introduce Tom and Sandra, but instead he said something to the effect of "I'm Robbie McIntosh and I'm new to here and I am happy to get the priesthood!" The next Sunday he passed the sacrament. He did a beautiful job and he was so proud to do it. He couldn't quite wipe the grin off his face and had a hard time suppressing the wave to mom and dad. Junior High has been a bit of an adjustment since he has to wake up at 6:30 am. He does it without complaint but it makes him pretty tired. They really make him work hard at school. One big disappointment is that he didn't get to be in the orchestra or chorus because it conflicted with his English class. Momma Bear will take care of that one in his IEP meeting coming up so it won't happen again next year!

Kirstin continues to be the sweet girl that she is. She seems to really enjoy fourth grade. They really pile on the homework and her back pack must weigh 50 lbs., but she shoulders it all without complaint. I'm impressed with her maturity. She is developing a creative and level-headed thinking style. She is also gearing up for basketball which is starting pretty soon.

Caleb is really maturing and is starting to take on some real responsibilites. I can now ask him to take Aidan outside to play and he takes good care of him. He really loves his little brother and nearly pops Aidan's head off when he gives his signature hearty hug. Sadly, Aidan has learned that biting is immediately effective in loosening the frequent head locks. We'll have to work on that one.

Aidan's hair is turning redder every day. I wonder how red it's going to get? His speaking ability is rapidly improving and he amuses us with the things he says. The other day we had smoothies and Aidan was taking his straw out of his drink and blowing through it. Caleb said, "AIDAN! Stop it! That is making a big mess!" Aidan replied rather coyly, "I can't hear you, Caleb!" He also LOVES to sing. Some of his favorites are Mary's Lullaby, Skinnymarinkadoo, Elvira, Jingle Bells (especially sung during sacrament meeting) and (sigh) Barney's "I love you". I thought with school starting it would be difficult to fill his day but we have really enjoyed our time together. We also love to hear him pray. He folds his arms, squints his eyes tightly and says something like
"HeavenlyFatherthankdeefordisdayfordisfoodpeesebwessitinnameof
JesusChrist--AMEN!

Rob and I have gotten new callings. In addition to ward organist and Primary pianist he is now Young Men's Executive Secretary and Assistant Scoutmaster. I really don't think he's busy enough! I have been released from Activities chair and RS teacher and called as nursery leader. At first, I thought I would have a tough time giving up my "freedom" but it turns out that I'm really enjoying myself AND I can get away with going barefoot. That's a real plus!

Tickling the Ivories

We're wrapping things up this week. The kids are so excited to go back to school. They met their teachers and I am very pleased with all of them. We've had wonderful "luck" with getting great teachers throughout the years. Aidan is going to be lost without anyone to play with. The kids have even gotten him obsessing over Star Wars! He walks around the house constantly singing the Darth Vader theme (dun, dun, dun, dun-da-dun, dun-da-dun) He also loves playing with "22D2" I'm going to have to polish up my Star Wars trivia if I'm going to play with him!

Kirstin and Caleb had their piano recital this week. Somehow, Aidan got in on the act too. I had to have Caleb reenact his recital at home because Aidan was climbing all over me and I was not able to get a good recording. Even at home you can hear his trademark screech throughout Caleb's performance. Sorry Caleb! I thought the kids did a great job. I'm very grateful to my friend, Chelsey Gregory who has agreed to take them on for a pittance. The kids have come a long way in 6 months! (P.S. You'll have to pause the playlist to be able to hear the video)
