Friendship is one of our favorite things, and that’s why we’re so excited and proud to publish the best book that has ever happened about friendship in a fucked world

    Rex Renée Leonowicz’s
~~ When There Is No One and There Is Everyone ~~

“There is no wish you were here / without you wish,” say the friends keeping the sun in each other. Little church of lost accents coming back in unison, bay to river to aubade.

A collage-like mixtape of techniques and influences, When There Is No One and There Is Everyone explores how to story a self to life in an unjust world, where gentrification and intersecting oppressions play themselves out in the intimate geographies of bodies, minds, and cities.

Rex Renée Leonowicz’s debut collection of poems and illustrations is a celebration of friendship, freakdom, and what it means when people on the margins come together to rough it out in tough times

Pre-orders now open! Check this book out and see Rex’s tour in August!

    (Cover design by Fabienne Elie!!)

Horses and holographs. Identity as orbit. A bricolage of psychocartography, a prism in love, poems for when the aliens finally come but only want to talk to the rocks. HOLODECK ONE is Jessica Baer’s debut chapbook, and it’s a mysterious new technology. One that deweaponizes the language of self-constriction, one for all the noises that noise leaves out.

The wonderful Mónica de la Torre says: “Witness language acquiring a propulsive force shattering the time and space divide: “we wind up / in two timezones of experiential / holodeck, I’m ignition / here?” None of these cosmo-terrestrial phenomenologists are part of the North American canon and yet it’d seem Baer has absorbed them all.”

First ten preorders will receive special custom infinite horse flipbooks, each with its own new one word poem by JB! Pre-order today!

  • Help a Poet Vs Duterte Violence

We want to signal boost MHP author Feliz Lucia Molina’s call for help for her activist friends in the Philippines who recently lost a brother.

    Here is Feliz:

“My friends Angelo Suarez and his partner Donna Miranda, both poets/artists/activist-agitators, lost Donna’s brother to Rodrigo Duterte’s senseless and sickening ‘anti-drug war.’

I’m forwarding a campaign to help support Angelo and Donna and their brother Emilian whose life was taken away. Please consider helping them out. Any and every dollar would help their family during this difficult time.”

Accept no imitations or Ben Afflecks: this is the real dude kid, kid. I keep calling it Eastern Massachusetts Barry Hannah, but you could also call it Masshole Surrealism, or—if you were Rachel B Glaser—call it a “mind-trip between Dickens and Kid Rock,” neither of which have anything to do with Massachusetts.

Steve Industry drinks a lot of Dunkies and fronts a band called The Steamrollers. His wife is Saundra (for now). His daughter is Nancy, and her favorite word is shampoo or loops or whatever friggin suits her.

You’ve got pumpkin light, Kelly’s Roast Beef, Salisbury Beach, the parole officer’s day-old onion smell, the fifth grade teacher weeping in traffic court, Rt. 128, sisters and aunts and cousins and sisters-in-law and lawn chair dads and Sbarro managers and best friends and old flames.

Hilarious and tender, Ben Hersey’s debut disgorges a powerful new vision of contemporary working class New England.

    Get you it.

One of our two new Fall/Winter 2016 books up for pre-order is Hossannah Asuncion’s OBJECT PERMANENCE.

The first 30 pre-orders will receive interactive confessional postcards with a guided questionnaire to help you figure out your own object permanence. There will be a dedicated Instagram account for sharing these postcards and meeting each other through little image windows.

This makes a lot of sense for this book, and here’s why.

When we picked Hossannah’s book for The Ted Hawkins Innovative Poetry Series, we thought a lot about windows. Because this book feels like visiting through the windows of a city in a way that avoids floating voyeurism, in a way of truly meeting-as-living that is hard to pull off and feels incredibly honest and important.

And yeah, there is a “now more than ever” that wants to move into the end of that last sentence, but the thing is that “always already” still lives there.

This book figures out a way to tenderly navigate the reality that everybody is looking at each other without entrance and with lots of questions.

There is the word pamilya and how that word lives in Filipino-American families and communities. There are morning figs and missing trees and body demands. There is a boneheaded comedian dude. There is a nurse sister. There is cleaning and grieving. There are a lot of automatic doors, but they’re all open.

(Also, Hossannah has chosen to donate all proceeds from pre-orders to CUNY Citizenship Now, which is an awesome service offering “free, high quality, and confidential immigration law services to help individuals and families on their path to U.S. citizenship.”

Because meeting-as-living is a lot easier when you’re not getting kicked out of your life.)

We are incredibly excited to announce pre-orders for two new books:

Hossannah Asuncion’s Object Permanence and Ben Hersey’s The Autograph of Steve Industry.

    But first.

We believe in pockets of fluid community that are not a given. They need to be constantly reinforced and strained with and weathered over and cultivated with listening and art and sweat.

To do our part, we reached out to all our authors and asked if we could put their books on sale for 20% off and donate all the proceeds after royalties to organizations of their choice.

We are heartened by the organizations our authors chose, and we invite you to check out the back catalog and buy a book.

Like our friends at Black Lawrence Press, whose roll call is BOOKS NOT BIGOTRY, we pledge to “post regular updates detailing the number of books sold and the amount of our donations.”

We’re calling this the Campfire Sale.

There is a lot of work going forward, and a lot of fear and mourning going deep, but one of the things it feels like we have to do is keep making campfires with people we love.

Be radically present for everyone suppressed, intimidated, violenced, fucked over. Be sneaky as shit. Be surprising with love. Be boring as logs until the light. Be funny with kindness. Be here for the with.

(Thank you to Entropy Magazine for this living document of resources.)

  • Kamden Hilliard

Hey look at that: a great interview with Kam Hilliard about their chapbook DISTRESS TOLERANCE over at William Woolfitt’s Speaking of Marvels!

    “What’s your chapbook about?

Apocalypse / the end of things / the bad things— and how to deal with them. The world is not implicitly shitty, of course, but right now it is: racism / colorism / homophobia. Due to the lasting effects of colonial and imperial projects, we are left with some seriously dark views of the world. I think of this chappie as an attempt to move through the gluck of the world without annihilation.”
