mariseth: Wonder Woman heaves a gigantic hammer - the big railroad sort. (wondy has a hammer)
Aw geez. I could have sworn that I'd written a post since the new year started? [personal profile] painted_dragon reminded me last night that I hadn't blogged here in forevver* but I didn't realize this'd be my first post of 2013! At one point I had been considering doing a sort of belated smashed-together version of the fandom snowflake meme, but my enthusiasm for that petered out quickly.

This term is going pretty sweet! Not perfect, but the fuckups have been fairly minor and don't feel particularly earthshattering. I'm getting good solid A's in my online paralegal course, and haven't missed any assignments. I've been missing too much of my Writing class but that won't affect my grade hugely. I've slept through my sculpture class twice now, which is the worst of it, but I'm hoping I can do some extra credit or something.

I have been less good at maintaining my effort on the List Of Things I Am Supposed To Be Practicing, such as playing my bass or working on my Spanish or drawing things. Nor have I been going into the studio to mess around with sculpture stuff, but I finally went on Friday for about two hours, and cranked out a troll, heh:

I read Saga and fell completely in love, and will hopefully be participating in some kickass cosplay of it at ECCC. I may also have plans for a really ridiculous Homestuck costume. Maybe. That could be a thing.

Anyone out there have experience with Puppy Linux? I was hoping Lubuntu (and/or Lubuntu Netbook ) held the answer to my various issues w/ Ubuntu, but it's still obnoxiously buggy and freezing. Unity 2D isn't faring much better. As with my current setup, I'd still have a partition with XP (bleh!) on it, so I wouldn't be worried about running WINE or anything.

At this point I'm not sure whether I'm using my broken computer as an excuse to be more antisocial, or if I'm using my antisocialness to excuse putting off finding the answer to what exactly needs to be done on the laptop-fixin front. Probably a mix of both, esp. considering that here I am not only catching up on posts but writing one up on my Nook. Tumblr is a lost cause, what with eInk being extremely unflattering to such an image-heavy platform, and also the official app not getting along with the Nook to the point where you can't scroll past the first two posts on your dash.

What I had been hoping was a relatively straightforward problem - the laptop seamed to work fine when connected to an external monitor, indicating a probable broken monitor, yes? - has returned to being a mystery, as switching to a replacement monitor has had...very erratic results. It booted once, BIOS was slow but it made it to the OS, then froze. Sometimes the screen will work if it is also plugged into an external monitor, other times the external will work fine but not recognise the real monitor, which will display psychidelic colors that gradually fade into different shades. I'm going to take it to someone who actually knows what they're doing on Monday, but in the meantime I'm grumbling to myself and fearing some sort of catastrophic motherboard problem.

I am experiencing the dreaded Indescribable Laptop Problems, which is interfering with my plan to be a person with an online social life. My laptop is, specifically, only-sort-of-powering-up. Which is to say, I press the power button; the fan turns on, I can hear the inner bits turning on, it does all the whirring ready-to-go noises; but then...nothin'. The screen doesn't turn on, it doesn't make the usual booting-up noises. And it just sits there. And will sit there indefinitely, until you hit the power button again, at which time it takes a second or two and powers off. I have been avoiding this fact all week, and sort of told myself that I was going on sabbatical from the internet because I was too lazy to turn my laptop on. Then I remembered that, um, I am taking online classes? And have textbooks in pdf form? So maybe turning on the laptop is an important thing? Whoops.

Tomorrow I will continue (as now) to commandeer my dad's desktop, and will dig aimlessly through the internet in the hopes of at least pinning down the problem. I know I've complained a lot about my laptop being a piece of shit (it is a complete piece of shit), but I've been counting on it holding out until next year before experiencing catastrophic breakdown. The idea being that in a year I will be employed and, if not rolling in disposable income, at least fitfully snoozing on top of a tiny cashpile. I will settle for this fall, the laptop's 5th birthday. I will give it official permission to break the fuck down, if it can just hold out for another few months.

There was going to be a more substantial post besides laptop worrying, but I am basically falling asleep at the keyboard.

May the fact that I am able to make this post rn stand as a testiment to the vast superiority of Touchnooter over Salsichanooter when it comes to Nook STR rooting. android market finally works! I can finally get this thing to browse in landscape! I can read PDFs properly!

Today I watched the first two episodes of Luther. Dear holy gods of Asgard, Idris Elba's face. I literally can't scrape up much reaction besides that, because my main impression of the show so far is "oh, nice scoring there" and "yessss Indira Varma be in everything please" and then a lot of nonsense noises and gestures meant to describe the perfection that is Idris Elba's face and also his acting and his being Idris Elba.

I can't help but feel that the end of the second episode is the beginning of a beautiful kismesis.

I'm sorry, circle. I broke a promise. I know you weren't around when I made the promise, but you deserve to know.

I had though I was strong enough. I'd done it before. I knew I could resist, if I wanted to. I knew that within me was the necessary determination, a will steely enough to stand my ground against the inexorable pressure. But it got to me, circle. They got to me.

I'm...
I'm reading Homestuck.

Sitting here in a ridiculous orange crewneck sweatshirt with bears on it. Bears wearing weird Halloween costumes. Luckily for my dignity, I have a get-out-of-hipsterism-free card: I need to do laundry and my mom - who I have been stealing clothes back and forth from for years - has the wardrobe of a kindergarten teacher. (this is because she just retired from...teaching kindergarten for 20 years). This sweatshirt is not my fault.

I did wear it out walking the other day, because it is bright fucking orange and all of the clothes I own are black, grey, purple, or blue. Those are not colors for walking in thick fog on a grey day on the coast. Those are the clothes of being run down by a jacked-up pickup because you were walking alongside a blind-curved county road in relatively-bumfuck nowhere. The threat of being mistaken for an ironic douchebag pales in comparison to my often-overwhelming fear of being hit by cars, so. Orange sweatshirt.

Sartorial misadventures aside, hey look! New blog! Not a thing I do very often! Which is sort of a lie, because I set up my Dth two and a half years ago, and I started Tumbling around a year and a half ago. It's just. well. it was time for a change. So yea, behold this new Dreamwidth account, where I shall endeavor to recount my life and also voice Opinions About Things, by which I mean Feelings About Fictional Characters.

As for 'where the hell did mariseth come from'; the short answer: there's a character in Laurie J. Marks' Earth Logic and Water Logic named Mariseth. She goes by Seth. I have since been enchanted by the idea of 'Seth' as a girl's name. At some point when I ramble about those books and how much I love them and how much you need to read them so I have someone to love them with, I will hopefully elaborate further.
