A Taste of Harvard

the week before school ended, i went on a short trip with my school to harvard in cambridge, mass. unfortunately, we ran out of time due to heavy traffic and rain. it wasn’t an educational tour, instead it was a visit to their arts museum. it was still nice because we got to see harvard square and parts of the university.

so, there you have it-harvard and all its grandiosity. all while it was raining.

i never even thought i would step foot in america till my 30’s much less harvard.

A Dedication With Love

six months ago, i arrived in a place i have absolutely no idea of. quickly, i was thrown into the daily life of the many americans here. learning their ways and observing everything they had to offer. some days were great, some days i felt distant. some days i questioned the things we take for granted. life, friendships and all the big things in life. or perhaps in all irony, the small things in life. it wasn’t love at first sight but slowly and surely, i fell in love.

mascenic high is much different from my school back in malaysia where i spent 5 years of my life trying to get an education. mascenic high is small, it’s occupants american. certainly not the best the country could offer in the eyes of others. some days, i wonder. why here? why am i doing this? why this school? why new england? now, i know. right now, it feels quite impossible to pinpoint all the minute things that define my experience here. but i’ll try my best.

being here in mascenic for 5 short months changed me. 5 years in my old school and i didn’t feel this way. going to school everyday, i feel a sense of community. a big family. most of these kids easily spend more than 10 years together. the bond they share, the things they do together are what inspire me. and to think of it, it is perhaps my lack of doing-things-outside school that made me feel the more for the relationship these kids share.

i’ll miss all the little things that i never thought would mean anything to me. i soon realized that mascenic represented mediocrity at its best. in it’s simplicity, it shines through. and true enough, everything happens for a reason. here, i found myself. here, i discovered. i began to see that there is so much more to life than just academics. i realized sometimes the ‘big things’ in life blinded us from feeling joy for all the million little things that life itself is made of. it provided for a much different climate, one that’s a lifelong education in itself. i know a lot of us might condemn the things we have that may not seem like the best or what we want. but, the truth is sometimes the things we want may not be the best. i know this because i used to be that person. after all it’s only human nature that we desire what is unattainable. but being here has slowly shown me the values of life and i appreciate every little thing more now.

humor, love and friendship. i’ve witnessed it all here in this little place. here in this town where trees grow in abundance and where cellphones don’t work in my room. haha slight digression. and now it’s time to say goodbye to all this. to all i’ve grown accustomed to in this short time frame. to all my friends, you’ll do great, have faith and all things shall work out. you have all been an inspiration.

i remember very vividly as i wrote on the application essay about a year ago that i wish ‘to inspire and be inspired by all the american lives that i shall cross path with’.

i am sure i have been inspired and i hope i have done the same.

but like what they always say, perhaps this is not the end, merely an end to the beginning. and i shall continue this journey because in a heartbeat, i know i can relive this moment. anytime, anyplace. thank you so muchhhh.

Senior Class Night

last night, the seniors organized class night which is basically a night to conclude senior year. we had a skit, slideshow and prophecies. the skit we had this year was hilarious, basically seniors act out characters consisting teachers who are ‘interesting’. making fun of them. super funny.

DSC01396_1536x1152

the row of ‘teachers’ and our ‘award presenter’ in red.

DSC01400_1536x1152

then we had our prophecies read out. so, basically they predict your ‘future’ based on your personality or your idiosyncrasies. and guess what mine was? “FIONA GAN-is Miss Malaysia, becomes a lawyer, gets married, takes care of her husband and beats Oprah/be in Oprah”. I’m not too sure about the last part but it was good i thought. funny.

DSC01391_1152x1536

i look like a ghost here somehow. but anyway,we watched a slideshow after that. our baby pictures and then our current picture. what a transformation for everyone, i must say. and then pictures of them from middle school, to high school and finally senior year. very sweet.

DSC01394_1536x1152

and i’m glad i came here to experience this.

DSC01409_1152x1536

alie had this ‘brilliant’ idea of jumping of the bridge into the lake. at 9.30 in the night. with our normal clothes on. so spontaneous. so exciting. and we all had to agree. it’s all or nothing. so, i decided what the heck, 2 weeks left, go for it. the old me would have just made a huge fuss and stayed in the car. it was fun i’m glad i did it. something to remember haha. the lake was about 10 feet deep and the distance from the bridge to the water surface is about 10 or 12 feet. alie and i hold hands and counted 5,4,3,2,1 so many times before we finally had enough guts to blast off. the guys didn’t think we would actually jump off. but we did. lol. in our panties and camisole. drenched wet. sickkkkkkkkkkkk.

DSC01410_1152x1536

drenched in the car. charlie’s expression is sickkkk. he calls this the photo bomb where you make weird faces like that behind the person taking it.

4666_107746840934_589035934_3150272_8273888_n

charlie complained about him being skinny. seriously? he hasn’t seen what’s really ‘skinny’ then.

4666_107746845934_589035934_3150273_899369_n

yea yea all wet. now what am i gonna say when i go home and they open the door to see me like this? lmao. so i decided no way, im putting my pants on before i get in the car.

DSC01411_1152x1536

when i got home, my host dad said “you look wet.  very wet.” haha and i went up to my room and took this pic. damn right i look wet. and showered. hot bath.ahhhhh. the best ever.

peace out.

All In A Day

since it’s spring break now, thought i’d share a few shots from school, basically random stuff.

my school here is neither a huge one nor an elite school. it is rather small and closely knit. there are no big competitions or amazing tournaments. it has what a typical average high school has.

but it is its mediocrity that has allowed me to experience a whole different perspective of what it feels like to be an american student. its engaging classes have provided me a renewed outlook on everything in general. most of all, its occupants have inspired me through their simple acts and genuine thoughts.

ZOMG

the title says it all. seriously, all my respect for olympic runners or even if you’re just a very athletic person. because i am not! get it? yeah there you go, fiona is not an athletic person at all. all she likes is brisk walking, yoga and tennis. though i’m not good at tennis cos i haven’t played like in  forever. hyperbole again but oh well we use that every single day. i will lose every race on the field, really.

today i went for my first track practise and i am exhausted. there are so many reasons as to why i made that decision and it was mainly due to how i felt after the 2 hour run. first of all i have never, note the word NEVER participated in a race throughout my life. LIFE. see that? and now you put an 18 year old grown up, stiff bones, girly girl on a super athletic mode and this is what you get. out of breath. literally. it was so hard for me to breathe, it wasn’t funny at all at the moment. i was almost tearing up due to the streches and the extreme pain and fatigue i felt. plus, i have scoliosis. yes, people i have scoliosis and that is so sad but i’m learning to cope with it and not be too judgemental. after all, the causes have not been identified and it might be due to genetic reasons because my mum has it too. only that mine is more severe as it shows more, probably because i’m more of a bony person. so, i’m quitting tomorrow and shall be taking yoga lessons next monday onwards. now, this is something i actually am really excited about and looking forward to. i really liked it the last time i did it plus this will help with preventing my spinal curvatures from worsening. it won’t cure but it will help treat and prevent. i hope it will help. and yoga is good for relieving stress and good postures. totally what i need. absolutely! now, i am so pumped up about the benefits of yoga. i have read that some people think yoga actually causes more harm to your back and stuff, but i would really like to give it a try. so, guys i will be doing this.

Spirit Week

march 16-20 is the spirit week of MRHS.

monday-pajama day

tuesday-tacky tuesday

wednesday-color day

thursday-tropical thursday

friday-school color day

the point of this whole event is to show your school spirit or some say class spirit. i don’t know. i’m just glad to be part of the experience. judging from a very malaysian perspective, this is very refreshing. after all we don’t see malaysian kids going to school in pajamas, do we? neither do we get the chance to see teachers roller blade. haha. very FUN. okay, let the pictures do the talking.
