Patch 5.4 – Ring of Peace

•June 14, 2013 • 3 Comments

Hey there everyone,

Patch 5.4 is up on the Public Test Realm now and there are patch notes on the WoW site. MMO Champion has heaps of data mined stuff, but please take everything as a test (hence ‘Test Realm’). Nothing is final yet, and much will probably change. The only change for Monks right now is that Ring of Peace now has a new animation, that looks nothing like the bubble that it was. I shall leave you with some screen shots from the PTR of Ring of Peace, it is actually a circle even if the screen shots make it look elliptical.

Blizzard Gets Flexible

•June 11, 2013 • 3 Comments

If you’ve been paying attention to Blizzard this week you will have noticed an announcement for Patch 5.4: Flexible Raiding.

If you haven’t seen anything about it yet, you can check out the blog post done by Nethaera here.

What Are Flexible Raids?

Flexible Raids have been designed to be a step above LFR and a step below Normal modes; this means that the challenge that they will provide is in between the 2, which is honestly needed. The difficulty jump between LFR and Normals is fairly high as it is and a step between this will be a huge benefit. The gear will drop on a per player basis, exactly like LFR, so that there is a chance every time you kill a boss that every player in your raid can get loot. This gear will be a higher item level then LFR, but lower than Normal Modes. Flex raids will open up in wings, like LFR instead of all at once like Normal or Heroic raids.

For a Flex Raid you can have between 10 and 25 players, the difficulty will scale with the numbers of players in your raid at the time you are attempting the boss. There is no minimum item level requirement to attempt this new raid difficulty, and because of this there is no group making tool available like there is in LFR. What this means is that you will need to create your own group of 10-25 people. You can however invite people from other servers with Battle Tags, which means you can raid with friends on different servers.

Why Do Flexible Raiding?

There are a huge number of reasons as to why Flex Raiding is a benefit, the main reasons that I have found are;

  • Your guild is comprised mainly of friends and family members and you don’t want to exclude anyone. You can bring up to 25 people in a Flex raid.
  • You are after a challenge, but you don’t want to step into Normal modes.
  • You get more chances at loot every week.
  • If you are missing raiders one night you can bring some friends and raid instead of doing nothing.
  • You can practice difficult fights on Flex before attempting them on Normal.
  • You can complete the meta achievement (Glory of the (Orgrimmar) Raider) in a Flex raid.
  • There will be additional rewards for Flex, Normal and Heroic raids, but not LFR.
  • While not decided yet (I asked Ghostcrawler) there is a possibility that, because Flex raids open up in wings, you might be able to start at any of those wings instead of at the beginning.

Overall I think that Flex raids will be a huge benefit for the raiding community as a whole, but what do you all think? Are you excited about Flex raiding? Will you run them? Let me know what you think.

Tank Guide Thursday: Hero in a Half Shell – Tortos

•June 7, 2013 • 3 Comments

Over the millennia, small amounts of mogu flesh-shaping magic seeped into the caverns below the Thunder King’s citadel. The dark energies warped one of the chamber’s native dragon turtles, melding it to the surrounding crystalline walls. Known as Tortos, this amalgamation of flesh and stone has since feasted on the cave’s rich mineral deposits and grown to a colossal size.

Tortos

If you haven’t seen the video for this encounter, you can check out the Fatboss guide here, or the Tankspot guide here.

Talents

The Talents that I recommend for this encounter are;

Tier 1 – I’m sure you’re surprised, but this tier is up to you, I take Tiger’s Lust, but pick whichever you want.

Tier 2 – I use Chi Wave for this talent, but I have also used Zen Sphere.

Tier 3 – I use Ascension here, but it’s up to you again.

Tier 4 – I would recommend either Charging Ox Wave or Leg Sweep here. But beware, stunning mobs will sync their swing timers, and you might take 5-10 hits at once.

Tier 5 – For this tier I use Dampen Harm.

Tier 6 – I use Rushing Jade Wind for this fight. If you are just tanking Tortos you can use Invoke Xuen.

Glyphs

The Major Glyphs that I use for this fight are;

Glyph of Spinning Crane Kick

Glyph of Fortifying Brew

Glyph of Zen Meditation

The Fight

For this fight you will be performing one of two possible jobs. The first being tanking Tortos, the second being tanking the bats that spawn throughout the encounter.

Tanking Tortos

Tanking Tortos is the easier tanking job in this fight, and as a Brewmaster, I suggest that you tank the bats, not Tortos. If you are tanking Tortos however, you should be taking Invoke Xuen instead of Rushing Jade Wind.

The main damage that Tortos does to the tank is from his ability called Snapping Bite. This ability can be dodged, so using Elusive Brew for it is a good idea. To deal with Snapping Bite, just rotate through Guard and Elusive Brew, using Dampen Harm and Fortifying Brew around the Quake Stomp casts.

Tanking the Bats

As a Brewmaster you should be tanking the bats. The bats spawn on a timer, roughly every 30 seconds or so (I think). If you have a Holy Paladin in your raid, ask them to use Righteous Fury, so that the bats move towards a single point instead of everywhere. Make sure that you have a good cooldown when you first grab aggro of the bats. They hit very hard, and if you have less then 350k health they will start healing when they attack you. Rotate between Guard and Elusive Brew to help your healers out, using Fortifying Brew when you are tanking them and ask for healer cooldowns (Ironbark, Pain Suppression) if it isn’t up.

Quake Stomp is a problem while you are tanking the bats, as it deals 65% of your health and stuns you, so Dampen Harm should be used for every Quake Stomp.

Brewmaster Tips:

The top tips that I have for this fight are;

  1. You can use Nimble Brew to break the Quake Stomp stun early.
  2. While tanking the bats, as long as you have a good Shuffle uptime, use Breath of Fire after a Keg Smash.
  3. Dizzying Haze can be used to grab the bats if you happen to not be close to where they come down.
  4. Tank the bats next to Tortos so that you and other Melee can cleave damage.
  5. DPS Tortos while there are no bats up to help your raid and keep your buffs up.

So that’s it from me today everyone, I hope that you have learned something from reading these. Do you have any tips for these fights as a Tank? Let me know through comments below this post. If you have any feedback I would love to hear it.

Holy Vengeance Batman!

•June 1, 2013 • Leave a Comment

As I am sure that some of you know Greg Street, aka Ghostcrawler the Lead Systems Designer at Blizzard Entertainment posted a tweet about a potential change that they are thinking about putting into Patch 5.4 to stop Tanks doing a ridiculous amount of damage and healing.

GCTweet1

The proposed change is to cap the Attack Power gain from Vengeance at a fixed percentage of your health, currently at 30% for 10 man raids and 50% for 25 man raids. Before we go any further let us keep in mind that these numbers are not in any way shape or form anything more than numbers for numbers sake right now. They are definitely subject to change and I think that they will change. As I am a 10 man raider I will be talking about it from that perspective.

So let’s dissect this a little bit. I’m not going to lie, the first time I saw this tweet my mind went into overdrive, I heard the voices in my head telling me that this was going to kill the amount of damage that my Brewmaster was going to do while raiding, that we would need our DPS to do more damage (shocking, I know) and that the era of Tanks being kings among men was over.

However, after a moment or two the voices subsided and this beacon of clarity shone down upon me. A question popped into my head, a very simple one in fact, “Is this going to change anything?”, and I had to think.

Like a lot of you I’m sure, I look at Skada (or Recount) during a fight to see how I am doing with my DPS compared to everyone else. Normally as a Brewmaster (and main tank) I pull very competitive numbers, always near or at the top. One thing that I have done before while raiding is check how much Attack Power I actually gained from Vengeance (I did it during our Lei Shen kill, you can see) and the only time that I have ever seen my Vengeance above 30% of my health was after soaking a Decapitate from Lei Shen, and hitting near 300k Attack Power from Vengeance alone.

The damage that I did from there was insane, I beat all our DPS for that fight, and was hitting so hard our Paladin off tank couldn’t keep aggro (granted I wasn’t helping with that).

So right now, the way the numbers stand, nothing will change, (except Lei Shen antics) from how much damage we are doing right now, to how much damage we would be doing with this 30% cap in place.

If nothing is going to change with our current raiding tier, then what about Tier 16? This change seems much more targeted at the next raid tier then the current one (I know, a little obvious) and Blizzard is trying to re-balance the structure of raids in a way. DPS should be doing the DPS, Healers should be healing and Tanks should be tanking.

This doesn’t mean that Tanks shouldn’t care about the damage or healing that they do, let’s face it, more DPS means the boss dies quicker, which makes everything easier. But Tanks shouldn’t be out DPSing the DPS in almost every fight, granted, there will be gimmick fights (like Windlord Mel’jarak) where it will happen, but it should be every once in a while, not all the time.

GCTweet2

It seems like the current concerns at Blizzard in regards to Tank damage and healing is that, right now, as a Tank you are trying to take as much damage as you possibly can without dying so that you can have more of this precious Vengeance. This system is effectively rewarding you for standing in the fire; something that we all know (or should know) is bad.

From a DPS viewpoint as well, it isn’t very fun when someone that isn’t a DPSer can do more damage then you, without putting that much more effort in then they normally would. After all, it is their job; it’s what they do during a raid.

So the main things that I wanted to get across in this post are;

1)    Don’t worry. Yes, the damage we do as Tanks is probably going to go down from the numbers that we are seeing now, but that’s how it should be.

2)    The numbers aren’t fixed, don’t take them as set in stone, they will be changed.

3)    Ghostcrawler said in a response tweet that he thought tank damage should be something like 50-80% of the damage a DPS does. I think this a fair range, which will probably change.

So that is it from me today, I apologise for not posting in the last week, that will be changing, I will be putting up more tanking guides, and the elusive Brewmaster tanking guide that I have been promising soon.

An Update of Sorts

•May 13, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Hey there everyone,

Nothing to much from me today, I’ve been working some more on the Brewmaster Guide and hopefully it should be up within a week or 2.

I’ve been settling in to the Throne of Thunder raid as well, and my guild has (finally) managed to kill Lei Shen, the Thunder King. If you want, you can actually see our kill from my stream, as a highlight, it is about 10 minutes long, with some language and yelling that probably isn’t safe for work, but you can check it out here;

http://www.twitch.tv/jdmatthews/c/2248672

It is a great fight on Normal Mode, and I can’t wait until we (hopefully) get to see it on Heroic.

This week we were unable to start on Heroics because we were missing people, but next week we will be, which you can check out on my live stream. If you are watching please feel free to chat and ask questions, part of the reason that I do stream is because I enjoy talking to people about raiding, Monks or anything else that is World of Warcraft related.

The days that I stream are Wednesday, Sunday and Monday from about 8:30pm until we are done. This is all UTC + 10, which is Sydney time if you work with places better then time.

So that’s going to be it from me today,

If you want to contact me you can reach me on Twitter, you can email me at [email protected] or you can reply here as a comment with questions, concerns or suggestions.
