Christmas 2013

Image
We had a wonderful Christmas celebration. We were able to share our Christmas Eve dinner (minestrone soup, broccoli cheese soup) with Uncle Phil and Aunt Maida and Cousin Randy. We had a very nice time! Here is Heber and Phil staying warm under  the He-Man quilt watching cartoons.
Image
We were thankful to have Phil home from Branson, Missouri during the holidays (and his birthday!) Here he is with his nephew Ezra. Phil is in a band Evoc which will tour the Dominican Republic and other resort areas. He is the vocal percussion.

James, Chelsea and four-month-old Ezra traveled from Cedar City to help us make our Christmas even brighter. We all had fun holding the baby and I even got his hand print in some clay so I can make him an ornament. We sure missed Lisa, Andrew and their kids this year, but I was thankful for Facetime on my phone!

Well, That Was a Bad Idea!

Yet another installment from next month's writing class. The topic is "well, that was a bad idea!" I've had a few over the years.

What ideas turn into bad ideas? What motivates my choices? Thinking over some of the dumb mistakes I’ve made over the years, there are a few common denominators. Not thinking things through is number one.
I am not a very spontaneous person; I like things listed in order, planned in advance and followed through on time. “Spur of the moment” is not my motto, though it seems that everyone else in the world can be so adventurous and on the move in an instant! Why can’t I? Well, as Popeye would say, I yam who I yam.
As a young adult I hung out at the Institute on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California, directly across the street from Pasadena City College. I still couldn’t get a Mormon to ask me out. I went to a stake dance almost weekly, I took Institute classes and attended the young adult ward faithfully. I had crushes on several young LDS men but few would ask me out. One day a group of young adults decided to go grunion running. Grunions are tiny ocean fish that come up onto the sand to lay their eggs in the middle of the night. They number in the thousands and it was supposed to be quite a sight.
I’ll go, I cried! How fun to socialize and be a part of the group. We all piled into two cars and went down to one of the Southern California beaches at around 11:00 PM to await nature’s spectacle. After the cars were parked everyone got out and chatted and it seemed like the beginning of a fun night. We looked for grunion on the beach but there weren’t any to be seen, not yet anyway. There weren’t very many people down there at the very dark beach. Before ten minutes everyone paired up as couples and disappeared. Where did everyone go? No one certainly wanted me as a third wheel to tag along with. Thankfully Sandy Escandon was left out also, so we hung out together. I didn’t know Sandy too well, but she was very sweet and quiet and we created an alliance.

Walking around this dark deserted beach with no one around was a bit unnerving, and we only saw one dead grunion on the sand, no thousands of flipping, jumping little silver creatures at all. One dead fish. This was one stupid idea. So a grunion run was just an excuse to go cuddle or make out with your boyfriend or whatever. Sandy and I walked around in the dark for hours trying to find our group. We were tired, mad and just wanting to be home! After what seemed an eternity our group finally came back and I was home at 6:00 AM with a perturbed mother waiting for me.

Snowy Weekend

Image
Yesterday I went to the grocery store at 7:00 AM and noticed a few snowflakes floating around. By 11:00 we had some snow sticking to the lawn and bushes and even a bit on the front porch!

Image
A few hours later it was piling up! I joked that this was the snow I ordered for the CTR5 Class Party today. It was so beautiful to see the snow falling. Kind of mesmerizing! We usually only get one weak little snowfall a year; this ended up being the most we'd ever seen in our 20 years here!

Image
George, Porter and Jack. Adam came, too, but he was a bit camera shy. They had fun making an ornament, putting together a cute nativity and eating snacks provided by their teacher Wilma. It was a fun party.

Image
Mary Anne T. got off work at 6:30. It was still snowing hard and sticking to everything including driveways and all the roads. We had planned to go to the temple that night and wondered what to do...well Heber and I picked her up and we went! It was not busy at all and was a wonderful experience. The trees near the temple looked so beautiful and you can see the roads snowy white (and slippery!) Church is cancelled today because the parking lot is full of snow and every driveway is slick. For safety sake it is cancelled, so we will stay in and stay warm! Brrr!!

A Scary Experience

It’s close to Halloween, time to think about scary things. It’s fun to bundle up and watch a not-too-scary movie or listen to ghost stories in a dark room. That’s a thrilling sort of thing to do on a windy, stormy night. Though there are no ghosts or goblins involved, the following was an experience I had which was a bit on the creepy side.

I look back when I was a young adult; my friends and I used to love to drive all around the Los Angeles freeways late at night just exploring. Sometimes we would look for celebrities’ homes (or so we thought!) or explore the hills and twisty roads searching for so-called “haunted houses.” One time we searched for and found the home used in the Beverly Hillbillies, at least for the outside shot. As a now older and hopefully wiser adult, I would be scared out of my gourd to let one of my children go driving around the entire county of Los Angeles late at night these days! That would truly be a scary experience!

I think about a time that, looking back, I came close to a very bad situation. While it was happening I somewhat realized it, but now I certainly do!

Back in 1975 our Young Adult Church group decided to go camping on the beach. I lived in South Pasadena at the time and the beach decided upon was Port Hueneme way up north in Ventura County. We had a fun time visiting on the beach, making s’mores and goofing off. It was too cold to wear swimsuits and go into the water, but we had a great time none the less.  I remember waking up in my sleeping bag the following morning soggy from the ocean mist. After a simple breakfast my best friend Niki Coop and I decided to catch a ride home with Eric Palfreyman in his clunker of a car.

As we drove along the old highway, the car starting acting up and making noises. Eric slowed down and suddenly the entire drive shaft fell out of the car! Luckily we weren’t at a high speed or there would have been a terrible accident.

We started hitchhiking along the highway, being the geniuses that we were. We were in the boonies, no houses or businesses anywhere. A highway patrolman stopped and told us we weren’t allowed to hitch rides there, so we headed for an off ramp which led us down an old side road in the middle of nowhere. After a while a scummy young man in a beat up old car picked us up. He had marijuana decals on the dashboard and was probably a bit high at the time. Eric sat in the front seat and Niki and I sat in the back, wondering what we’d gotten ourselves into. He could have driven us anywhere. Eric finally told him to let us out, which he thankfully did.

Onward we walked along the deserted area. We had no idea where we were. After about twenty minutes a car came towards us… it was the same scummy guy coming back! Now my heart beat faster and I started feeling a little more fear. He pulled over several feet away and motioned for us to come over. Eric, being our protector, went to see what he wanted while Niki and I stayed put. Eric soon came back and the car took off.

What the heck did he want?!”

Eric explained that the guy wanted Eric to go with him and ditch the girls. I was dumbfounded! So Niki and I weren’t the targets of this scummy character, it was Eric he wanted! We should have been protecting him! We laughed it off and kept walking. Something inside told me we had averted a bad situation. A nice older gentleman soon picked us up and took us to civilization. From there I have no recollection of how we made it home, but we certainly did and my parents never knew about my experience with hitchhiking.

Life's a Beach

Yesterday we went to Tolmie State Park only 20 minutes or so away from Lisa and Andrew's. It was a fun and beautiful place for pictures! Two of the three grandkids started out in crummy moods so it's amazing Andrew got these great photos! Being in this lovely place made everyone happy!

Photos From a Friend

My work buddy Debi took some pictures of Ezra, Chelsea and James. I wasn't prepared for what she came up with! They turned out so beautiful! Debi worked some magic and took great photos on August 19. Thank you, thank you!
