As always a superb literature review by IMF’s Research Bulletin. This issue covers:

The Q&A in this issue features seven questions about emerging markets and the financial crisis (by Ayhan Kose); the research summaries are “Tax Revenue Response to the Business Cycle” (by Cemile Sancak, Ricardo Velloso, and Jing Xing) and “Banking Crisis Resolution: Was this Time Different?” (by Luc Laeven and Fabian Valencia).

All very timely issues and must read. Especially the one on tax revenues and business cycle as it is seldom discussed.

The less known Paul Krugman

Avinash Dixit delivered a talk at a lunch honoring Krugman. He says he is happy his kid brother has made good in the profession.

He says so much has been written on Krugman’s work on trade, economic geography etc that he will instead focus on his other contributions to economics. He mentions following:

  • Balance of Payments crisis
  • Exchange rate target zones
  • Competitiveness
  • Interstellar Trade (I find this one amusing)

Why doesn’t the government interfere to lower other prices apart from air fares?

My confidence index on Indian government’s capabilities are dipping with each passing day. Each time I think a low has reached and may be things improve from now on, we have something more to offer. Despite a huge interest in Indian economy, I continue to maintain we are not assessing the risks of Indian Political System (see this as well).
