Designed after the Real Madrid vs. Ajax Champions League match which Real won 4-1. While Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, Benzema added a beauty with a stunning bicycle kick. Only one word to describe that, really. Amazing!

A design for two of Ambigram's Pioneers: John Langdon
Image
rotating into Robert Petrick
Image
The choice of names started of smoothly, and we even managed to make the initials more prominent by making these thicker. The position of the L/P was crucial, and that worked to our advantage. The most awkward part of this design in the 'Ro' in Robert rotating in the 'don' in Langdon. This may be improved by using another writing style and presentation.

Not exactly an ambigram. Just something we rediscovered while cleaning up our place. Done back in 10th February 2002, the piece was for the inner cover of an assignment titled Beauty in Ambiguity: A study on Noor S.I.'s works.
After the Liverpool-Manchester United match, was inspired to try doing an ambigram for the two great rivals. A Liverpool rotating to Manchester United didn't quite work. Further experimenting and exploring brought a more satisfying solution:

Today marks our - nag's and fa's - five years' anniversary. It's been a wonderful journey thus far. And now, with two extra members in our family, we are hungrier for more adventures down the road.

Five yrs strong... and counting...

The draft (above) and the almost-final design of The Forgotten One (below).
Image
(One useful tip: 'the' rotates almost naturally into 'one'. An insertion of a suitable word between 'the' and 'one', therefore, can make for an interesting phrase and a visually appealing ambigram. Try it!)
Image
Another design from between stacks of papers. Done early last year, when the term 'ohana' - ('Ohana' means family) - was discussed. Loyang is Nag's school. A reflection piece, hand-sketched.

An ambigram for the Wedding Invitation of Kishure Kumar & Vijiya Letchumi. One of our longest name pairings so far (and we've only been doing this for six years), and really like how it looks.

A wordplay derived from the 180-degree rotational symmetry of the individual letters. 'rumi' rotates into 'jawi'. Both refer to a writing system for the Malay Language. 'Rumi' is the system using the Romanized alphabet. While 'Jawi' uses the Arabic alphabet.

From FA's lecture notes. Translated to 'Between Rumi and Jawi'.

Been a while since our last post. Ambigram opportunities came and went. From the double symmetry date of 13MEI (13 May in Malay) to a rotational symmetry of 21.5.12. Well, Carpe Diem. Or not. Without much ado:

ImageOne of the factors that make an ambigram work is the positions of the characters/letters/glyphs in a particular word or phrase. Ambigrams of 'awesome', 'mayhem' or 'edge', for example, are abundant and done in numerous styles. They work. A 'John Mayer', 'Angelina Jolie' and 'Jamie Oliver' ambigram may be easily done, too, if one were to study the letter placements in these names. Similarly, this 'DareDevil' ambigram provide for an easy solution. We did this in less than 15 minutes. Hand drawn.

Image We have drawn this so many times over the past year, but always only on paper. Always wanted this to be printed onto the T-shirt for the rockclimbers (their gravity-defying stunts making an ambigram design so very relevant, of course!).

Image Been reading about the Upside Down Question Mark, usually seen in the Spanish language. Guess it's very apt to be used in an ambigram, especially since we do know of many Spanish-speaking ambigram artists and visitors to our blog. 'How are you?' indeed. It's been a while..
