How again has technology improved communications?

We have a home phone, I have a cell phone, my two brothers have a cell phone, my mom has a cell phone, and my dad has a prepaid cell phone. Now with a total of five ways to talk to people in my family, not including my own phone, it should be fairly easy to get ahold of someone right? Wrong! Today on the way home from work I called every phone that we have, and didn't get a single person to pick up their phone. No, its not because they hate me (I hope), it's because they don't have their phones with them. Technology, great! I can call anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world. Sounds impossible, but its not. Practical on the other had, it isn't. Now that everyone can communicate with everyone everywhere, we don't. We stop using it for what it needs to be used for. Having a cell phone today isn't a benefit to anyone but yourself. Instead of making communication a part of our lives, we have taken it, made it wireless, and stuck it where no one can use it but ourselves.

I've been thinking

I had the last three weeks off from school and one week ahead of me still until I go back. While I've been off I've been trying to think how I want to re-organize my blog and make it look better, but so far no ideas have really stood out to me. Life's funny that way, sometime you get and idea and it will carry you through what ever you need to do, and other times you look and look and all you see is the end of page looking for something new but nothings there. What to do, what to do.

and oh yeah, Happy New Year!

A new year huh, fun. Well I guess that my last article went right along with my current activities. Okay, so I procrastinated for a while. Okay, so I decided not to do anything for three weeks. Can you blame me? I mean, I finished school three weeks ago and have been enjoying what others would call 'boredom'. Doing nothing, having nothing to do, and enjoying it (that's a pretty catchy line if you ask me). Anyway, so I'm going to start back up on my blogging. Not as a New Years resolution, because I hate New Years resolution, but because I'm finally ready to start doing something. So happy New Years, stop making resolutions you won't think about a week from now, and have a great day.

Procrastination, its great . . . at first

Its always nice to put something off, but when that thing needs to be done in the next day and it takes a day to accomplish, you haven't mastered the art of procrastination. Those who are truly trained in this delicate art can do just about anything they like, and then do the thing that needs to be done in just enough time. Its a art as much as martial arts is, but it's an art that is indefinitely harder to master. While many practice this art, only a select few succeed. May I just suggest that in order to master the finer qualities of this skill you procrastinate the easier things, and then when you are ready, try for a school final or job presentation. =)

Why I Dislike New Years

Its not the cold. Its not the new years beginning. Its the goals. I dislike goals. I don't like having something in front of me always reminding me of what I need to do in the future. Why do people complain that the present goes to fast, because they are always looking the future. Goals are never for right now, they are always for things in the future. I accomplish everything I need to without writing down a single goal. If fact, it seems that if I write down things I need to do down, I forget them (because they are written somewhere else). People need to stop worrying about the future and enjoy the present. This doesn't apply in all situations of course, but for most of life it does. Goals just suck. Come on, you never accomplish those New Years goals anyway. Stop kidding yourself.Image

Last Week

ImageYes, finally the final week of school has arrived. Next week will be the last week before finals. Then all this homework, studying, and test can go out the window or at least until school starts again in the spring. The thing about college which sucks is the burn out factor. You have a nice fuse at the start of the semester and then it dies out about two weeks before schools ends. Then the last couple weeks of the semester are a long drawn out torture session. The funny part about school getting out is that when you have no school work to do, you become really bored. All of the time you just dedicated to getting things done turns into free time. Funny how you hate it while you're in school and then its boring when you're out.

A change is coming

I have been thinking about reorganizing my blog a little, and hopefully have it done before Christmas. I am going to make the blog pages 1024 instead of 800 pixels wide, add book and cd reviews I buy or read, and incorporate some other 'new ideas' into my blog. If you have any suggestions that would add to the page content, let me know. Thanks, Aaron

We underestimate the great minds of the past

ImageAs I have read about the great minds of the past in my current book - A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson - I have come to the conclusion that the people of the past were as intelligent as the great minds of today. Yes, the general public of yesterday is much like the public of today, uneducated, but the accomplishments the intellectual of the past accomplished in math, science, and theory developed were almost breath taking. They calculated the weight of the world, the differences in longitudinal measurements, and the shape and rotation of the earth and planets in our solar system. Their calculations are so close to ours, thats its hard to believe we underestimate them so greatly. If you think about it, we aren't that much different from the world five hundred years ago. There are those who make great leaps and bounds in knowledge and advancement, and they rest of us are just 'here'.

Who's McDonald's Quoting???

I went to McDonald's today at lunch, and while I was eating I was looking at the bag. While looking at the bag, I started noticing these quotes all over. Who just puts random quotes on their bags? Well I guess we know one company that does.

Burning Good Energy . . . ???

ImageYep, using ellipses ("...") in quotes usually means that something came before the "..." and something after it. So what is this quote omitting? Maybe, "Burning good energy, its from healthy things like vegetables and a low fat diet foods, i'm lovin' it." Or maybe, "Burning good energy is impossible if you eat crap, that's why i'm loving it (this food)." What is good energy? 'Good Energy' on Google brings up power and electricity information. Wait, I've got it, its the opposite of bad energy.

What does this quote even mean?

ImageUsually additional information is supplied to help people understand what the quote is actually about, not in this case. There's no additional information around this quote helps you to understand it. Who anyways, has the authority to give style points? Don't you have to have some sort of style degree or know what style is?

At least one quote makes some sense!
Image
There is one quote which makes some sense. This one is a complete enough sentence. Wow! Here I thought I was going to have to figure out the meaning to all of these without help. I was starting to think this was find the meaning of life game.

What they imply make no sense (much like this sentence).

ImageHow does playing basketball and food work together in that sentence? "Playing ball gives me fine form because . . . i'm loving it??? Someone want to even try and fill in the blank between the '. . .', because I don't think its even possible to create a sentence that makes even a fragment of sense out of that.

I'm not against McDonald's at all. I may not agree with some of their ideas and food, but these quotes are out right ridiculous. They aren't cited, explained, or make the lease bit of sense. It must go with the philosophy that if you confuse someone enough, they will come to understand that they will never understand and that's enough understanding to keep them quite.

My Fast Food Pet Peeve

I rather like fast food, but I have one pet peeve that really bugs me. Out of all the things that they could ripe you off on, it has to be a 3 cent drink. Why when you get a drink, do they put 4/5 ice in the cup before they actually fill it up. What do they think, I'm going to be using my drink for the next six hours? Oh yeah, I forgot, I don't actually use the drink when I'm eating its only there to be drank later. Why is it so hard for them to give you more in the thing that cost them the least and you the most. Stop filling my cup to the top with ice! It would be nice to have more than 6 ounces of drink in a 22 ounce cup.

Wow, Talk about Lights

Wow, take about either too much free time, too much holiday spirt, or just one awesome house. Watch this video of this house with lights. It's pretty awesome.
