The Levantine Coinages Online (LCO) is a digital, open-access database of Achaemenid and Hellenistic period coin typologies from the southern Levant. It links to coin examples in major state and public collections like the Israel Antiquities Authority, Israel Museum, Jerusalem and the American Numismatic Society, New York. LCO serves as a freely available research tool for numismatists, archaeologists, historians and enthusiasts. It allows for effective coin attribution, cross-referencing, and drawing complex inferences from this numismatic material. The inclusion of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s extensive database of coin finds from controlled archaeological excavations in Israel further strengthens LCO’s value. Partnering with the American Numismatic Society, a pioneer in online resources for ancient coins, ensures LCO integrates seamlessly with a well-established and growing network of open-access numismatic data. Unlike printed typologies (books) LCO is capable of continuously being updated, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of coin classifications and attributions as new material comes to light.
Levantine Coins Online is made possible by stable numismatic identifiers and linked open data methodologies established by the Nomisma.org project.
