Mark McGowan discovered Shepard Fairey’s work 20 years ago when he first moved from England to America. He was hit with unexpected culture shock seeing the logical contradictions embedded in American culture, including the widespread use of religion to promote guns and the death penalty, while simultaneously opposing social policies like free healthcare. While trying to reconcile with this cognitive dissonance, Mark resonated with Shepard Fairey’s work, which boldly acknowledged and questioned these contradictions. It struck such a chord that he was inspired to immortalize the art on his body and wear it proudly on his sleeve.
