What is our new theme ?

Mrs. Bass usually waits until after
Labor Day to unveil the new theme
for the library each year.
Anticipation makes things more
exciting, don't you think?

So the work began on a Friday
after school. The progress was
tweeted out to Mrs. Bass'
followers to see if anyone could guess
what she was working on.

Have YOU guessed it yet?

Then it was time for the finishing touches......

LEGOS
Building Readers

There are even some touches of the theme inside the library too.

Image

Students were very excited when they arrived.

Image

We even had time to do some lego creating
as we discussed how the library books
we read help build our reading skills

There were even some bigger legos for the
smaller students to use as a group activity.

Image
Image

An impressive statistic was shared that
the number one indicator of school success
is.........the number of books read.

So as we grow and build this year
we are sure that not only our creativity
will increase but our reading abilities
will too!

Learning About LIbraries

This week we spent some time
thinking specifically about
      LIBRARIES.
Image

There were some special picture
books to examine.  It gave us an
opportunity to practice careful
page turning.

Image

Image

We took time to consider how many
wonderful volunteers help us each week.
Image
Image

Older students began collecting words
about libraries.

Image

Image

And when the words were
all keyed into a special word cloud
website - we had a visual image of
what the library means to us.

Image

Image

It is always important to take time to
reflect on the important role the
library has in the life of our school.

We are already preparing for her visit in many ways.

Previewing her books.....

Ordering books....

Visiting her website....

And enjoying her stories...

Until then - we are counting the days until Tammi Sauer is here in person!

Honoring Our Summer Readers

Image

The first one in with the summer reading list was this little reader!
He greeted the library on Meet the Teacher Day with
his completed list even BEFORE he went to his new classroom.

So...
as the other readers finished turning in their lists by Howdy Day,
they were allowed to select a new notebook reward.

It is wonderful to report that we had 109 students complete
the summer reading challenge this year!
So excited for them because research shows that they
are really ready to start school with the reading they have
completed this summer!

Woot! Woot!

LIFE PRINCIPLE OF THE WEEK - FRIENDSHIP

Back in the saddle again  - that's a reoccurring theme
for the OCS Elementary each August as we all head back to school.
Image

It takes on two looks for us.
In Pre K through Third grades, there is a definite Western flair
in the decor and accents you may see and hear.
Even in the library......

Image

Image

And the librarian........

Image

So many rich and wondrous tales to share and enjoy.
The students and teachers are loving the cowboy stories.

Image

Now for our bigger audience, the Fourth and Fifth Graders
will be accessorized for Team Spirit Day !
Everyone will wear a shirt to promote their favorite team of any sport.

Image
Image

It gives an opportunity to help with location skills for finding
sports books as well as contrasting fiction and nonfiction
writings with a sports theme.

Image

And we have some great biographies of sports stars too.
Image

Whether it's saying "Howdy!" or cheering on our team -
OCS students are making an effort of demonstrate friendship this week.
