BEAR IN ME -- BEEN HIBERNATING

Image
THE WHEELER BEARS JUST CAME OUT OF HIBERNATION.
Getting emails from family and friend asking if I am no longer doing my blog. NO I HAVE NOT stopped writing my blog. . It has just been a cold dreary winter in Alabama with snow more often than I wanted, lots of rain and cold dismal days. These bears went into hibernation ie: Facebook, Twitter, reading and busy December, January February basketball games with Preston and Sawyer. Before you know it. there is Baseball. YIPEE.
I am re-organizing my priorities for Spring and Summer getting back to posting to our blog. It is nice to hear how much our friends and family enjoy keeping up with us through the blog.
Got lots of news to update...promise to be back on right away. I will email everyone on my email list.
UNTIL THEN,
Barbara and Ken

Brenda took a ride in a race car at Talladega Speedway yesterday. Asa, Dal, Phillip, Preston , Parker , Cole,, Ken, me, Preston and Sawyer cheered her on...It was very exciting for us all. The boys got to meet the race drivers and the crew in the Pit.
Not sure she will want to advance to the next step of driving the race car. She was in car number 13, dedicated to the Firemen that lost their lives in the Charleston, NC fire. Josh Shaw was the speedy driver.

VETERAN'S DAY

Image A VETERAN is a man or woman who served in the military for the United States of America fighting to preserve our freedom. Many paid their lives to protect us. Let us honor all the men and women that fought for our freedom on VETERANS DAY on Thursday, November 11. We would not have the freedom without these Veterans. God Bless all our Veterans. On this day, please say a special prayer for all the military that are off protecting our liberty and their families. God Bless our Veterans and the USA.

DAVID PHELPS CONCERT

Image Denise, Rob, Preston and Sawyer enjoyed David Phelps Concert at Gardendale Baptist Church on September 28th. Due to a conflict in schedule, I had to miss my favorite singer. This was the first time that the boys had heard David in person. They were awed by his presentation. He has a wonderful band and back up singers. ALthough I was not able to go, I heard all about his wonderful music presentation by Preston, Sawyer and Denise. If you want to fill God's presence, go hear him at one of his concerts. You will leave with a feeling of being blessed with the words of his songs. Pictured: David Phelps, Denise, Preston and Sawyer

FALL BASEBALL - TRUSSVILLE BASEBALL ASSOC.

Image
Preston and Sawyer decided to play Fall Ball. The first game was on September 4th with both boys having 10 AM games. Glad their fields were back to back so we could half catch both games.
Preston played on the 9 year old team. It was the first year for one of the team to pitch. This was so new to all of them.... Preston pitched as did several of the team. Each boy can only pitch 50 balls in each game. There was a lot of walking the bases but the boys did get great experience for the upcoming year. It was really good for preparing them for Spring ball. Preston also played first base.
Sawyer still is in coach pitch and played with the 8 year olds although he is only 6. He did catching and he loves every minute of it... No matter how hot it is. They also had another team member to catch when there was double headers. After all it was HOT September and October.
I have lots of pictures but my blog will not hold them all. LOL. I will post the AllStar picture of both boys.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Image
Image
Preston and Sawyer are attending HillDale School this year. Hard to believe Sawyer is in the first....Preston 3rd. They are looking forward to the school year.
Both boys had excellent report cards....Preston made all A's and 1 B...Sawyer made A & B's. So proud of both boys for all the hard work......
They have been very busy with arts and crafts for the Thanksgiving holiday. Both boys have new friends and enjoy their teachers.

TRIP TO TUNICA AUGUST 23-25

We met Cecil and ELoise Kuykendall and Roy and Harriet Woodward to have a little fun at the casinos...We enjoyed eating buffet at Sam's Town, playing the slots and cards. It was a fun time. We had lunch at Paula Deen's the next day.. Of course we tried our luck at Harrahs but decided we were not going to win on this trip. We had lots of fun together so it was a good trip. We will have to do it again before the year is over.

The cousins had a great time at Spring Valley Water Park....Jill, Derek, Lake, Carter and Anna, Pappy and Mimi along with Phillip, Preston and Parker. Dal, Kim and Cole, Denise, Preston and Sawyer, Ken and me. ALso our cousins from Cullman area joined us. Angie, Derek's sister-in-law and her children...We all had a blast. I believe Dal and Derek enjoyed the big slides more than the kids....It was lots of fun...Sawyer even talked me into doing the water slides too.
Well summer is over and I am behind on my blog again. I know I promised an up-date at least every two weeks. I don't know where August, September and October went. I will try to refresh my memory and bring you up on some of the things that we have enjoyed during that time. I must give my blog more time.

Congratulations Russell, don't forget, it is your time to have me over for dinner now. Love you and Best Wishes on this adventure.

Trussvile Park hosts 8 year old DIzzy Dean State Champions

Image
The eight year old Dizzy Dean State Championship was hosted by Trussville Ball Park. Preston played with the 8 year old Trussville Team in the Play Off. The Trussville Baseball Association lead by James Hindman and all the Board made everyone welcome while at our Park. The final program was one of the best I have seen for a Dizzy Dean State play off. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped. All the hard work proved that we enjoy our ball park and the kids.
Congratulations to Clay-Chalkville for winiing the State 8 year old championship. Northport came in second. Both teams were champions and well coached ball teams.

Our Vacation 2010 - Short but lots of fun while it lasted!

We left on Sunday, June 13th on a 3 1/2 to 4 week vacation trip with lots of excitement and places to see. We spent the 14th and 15th in Oklahoma City, OK Oklahoma City was lots of fun. We enjoyed a great steak at the Cattlemen's Steak house in the Stock Yards area. The Stock Yards made me sad. Glad we ate before we went there. We then rode down to the Brick Town Area, Mickey Mantle's Restaurant and the ball park. During our stay, we went to the Oklahoma Bombing area and took the tour in the museum. It was sad but glad we went . What a blessing that so many lives were saved during this tragedy. Ken and Asa went to the Cowboy Museum while Brenda and I enjoyed the day in Brick Town. We took the tour boat on the canal. Our tour hostess was so cute and informative. For lunch we ate at Toby Keith's Restaurant which was very good. Also we had a Star Bucks later that day. Brick Town is a great fun day. The next morning, we headed toward Denver. We stopped for the night in Dumas, Texas. It was a very laid back town. The next day we stopped in Trinidad for lunch. The resturant was suggested when we stopped in Trinidad's welcome center. Then we drove on into Denver. We checked into our motel, decided to go take a ride around downtown Denver. We went to the Mall which is 18th Street that is closed to traffic except for a bus which is free . If you get tired of walking, just hop on and get off on down the mall. It is so fun with lots of shopping and restaurants. It was a fun place., Early the next morning we went to the U. S. Mint to get our tickets for the tour. The tour is free but they only have so many tickets available for each tour. This was very interesting. Of course, no cameras allowed inside. After the tour, we went to the Gift Shop and bought some unusual coins. Asa and Ken collect coins so they enjoyed this Gift Shop. We visited the downtown area, Capital building and Arts Centers.. We visited Mile High Stadium where the Bronco's play. This tour was well worth our time. Also we enjoyed the Denver Skate Board Park. Those skate boarders were very good. Some of them were very young. Everyone in the afternoon hits the Park. We went to Coors Field but did not take the tour as a baseball game was going on. We also went to Red Rocks Amphitheater. It was awesome. I had seen John Tesch and Bill Gaither TV shows from there. The acoustics are unbelievable. It was hot while we were there. We enjoyed riding around these small towns. We had dinner at a unque local Sports Grill. Time for us to go to motel and plan another day. Our plans for next couple of days included Boulder, Aspen and Vail. We were all exhausted and took no time for us to fall asleep. THE NEXT MORNING OUR PLANS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY: Ken told us when we woke up that he had not slept all night. He was having shortness of breath. We took him to a Walk In Medical Facility near the motel. Immediately, they treated the shortness of breath and pressure in chest as cardiac problem. They called an ambulance and took him to the nearest hospital after giving him nitroglycerin. Asa and Brenda followed the ambulance. I rode shot gun and one of the EMT's rode in back with Ken. Thank the Lord, we were only a few blocks from the hospital (Littleton Adventist Hospital). The next 6 hours we spent at the ER. They ran all kind of blood work and tests including Cat Scan on Ken. This is one of the nations top Trauma Hospitals. The ER was so hectic but gave all patients immediate care. Most of the waiting was for results from the blood work. Ken was given more nitroglycerin Patches The pressure in his chest did not increase or subside. He was admitted late afternoon to the Cardiac Observation Unit. Well after all the tests and cat scan, his heart was ok but he was told his COPD had not adjusted to the altitude change. After another day in the hospital and more tests with all his tests showing no heart damage, he was given breathing treatments. This gave Brenda, Asa and I time to go down to the Columbine Memorial. It was beautiful in honor of the victims. Ken was dismissed the next afternoon. Doctors recommened he needed to leave the high altitude and see his cardiologist. He was told the smoking had to be stopped immediately. We were scheduled to leave for Jackson Hole, Wyoming the next day which was Father's Day. Asa and Brenda would not go on to Jackson Hole and let us fly home. They were as concerned over Ken as I was. He gave us a scare, I tell you. We knew Ken would not be able to handle the higher altitude in YellowStone. We all agreed things happen for a reason. We took our time driving back stopping often. As soon as we got out of Kansas, Ken began to feel better. Thank Goodness. Ken's cardiologist saw him as soon as we got home. We had Ken's hospital file with us. He recommended a pulmonologist which Ken is being treated with breathing meds. When he goes back to the doctor in August he will find out if his breathing is responding to the meds.. He has not had a cigarette since the morning he got so sick. Praise the Lord, it has been 34 days now. We are so proud of him. A big thanks to the Walk In Clinic, Ambulance Service/EMT's and the Hospital Staff for the great medical attention for Ken . They were wonderful and so caring. The Littleton Adventist Hospital is a wonderful, caring institution. Brenda and Asa, thank you for helping us during this tense time. I can always count on your support and love. Thank you God for watching over us during this time, keeping us save on our trip and watching over Ken, me, Brenda and Asa. Things happen for a reason I believe. It just wasn't the time for us to go further on our trip. When we got home, I did get to enjoy Preston's playing in the 2010 Dizzy Dean 8 year old State Tournament. Trussville was the host this year.. Congratulations to Clay Chalkville for winning out for the State. I would have missed this. Brenda and Asa got to spend some time with Jill and her family here and in Tampa, as well as her other grands. The doctor assures us that after Ken's medication helps his COPD, he will be able to go to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. We still are planning our trip as soon as Ken gets the go ahead for the high altitude. Brenda and I have over 500 pictures of our trip. As soon as we can edit and organize them, I will post some of them to the BLOG. I promise I will not bore you with to many of them.
The first week in June our hardwoods have been installed a year. All we can say is that we wished we had done it ten years ago. We love how easy they are to take care. My allergies are happy all carpet is removed. Trixie, our cat with the attitude was 5 years old first week in June. Yes, she did give a "hiss" birthday. Of course, she hisses at someone every day. We enjoyed tournament play with Preston and Sawyer through the 12th of f June Both boys did great during the tournaments and now gettng ready for all stars.

He was welcomed by Jessica & Dustin along with big brother Cade , lots of grandparents and great-grands. What a blessing for our family. (pics to follow)

NOW FOR MARCH 2010

Belated birthday wishes to our special daughter-in -law Karen Lemley on March 3. She enjoyed a quiet dinner with Roger. What a way to celebrate your 29th birthday! March 8, had my routine checkup (6 months) and my cholesterol is going higher. We are trying a new medicine (6 tablet/day) Welchol. We will see in 3 months how it is regulating my cholesterol. Statin drugs are out...I can't tolerate them. NOW IT IS BASEBALL AGAIN: Preston is playing for the Dodgers, 8 year olds as first base. Of course, he missed the first 3 games due to breaking his arm while skating while visiting his grandparents in Harpersville. His arm was broken at the elbow but healed rapidly. He enjoyed having a cammo cast. He is back in the game and hitting and catching the ball like crazy. Rob coaching the Dodgers. Sawyer is playing up a year in 7 year olds with the Cardinals. He plays pitcher, catcher and out field as needed. Sawyer is bunting and hitting the ball well and keeping up with the 7 years olds, Of course, he loves to play ball 24/7. Coach Pat Smith is the Cardinal's coach. All the coaches and teams at the park enjoy the competition and team spirit. FUN IS THE NAME OF THE GAME AT THIS AGE. Games for the boys are on Saturdays and either Tuesday or Thursday during the week. Lots of going to pull for our grandsons. Ken and I enjoyed traveling with the Vestavia Rebels Baseball team during spring break. The first tournament was Thursday in Huntsville; then on to Tennessee to play an afternoon tournament. The parents of the team put together a fun day at Lynchburg, Tn. There was a tour at the Jack Daniel Distillery ; then lunch at Mrs. Bobo's. We certainly enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. Bobo's . Thanks to the parents for putting together a fun time for parents/guests before the afternoon games while the boys practiced. Rebels made us proud! Brenda, Asa, Ken and I stayed the night back in Huntsville. Saturday, we went over the Etheridge, TN to tour the Amish Community. This was a very interesting trip to see how the Amish live wth no water, power and take care of their huge 12 plus children. GREAT TRIP.

Catch Up February 2010

Gee I have been a bad blogger since the middle of February.. The month of February was rainy, cold and some light snow. Preston and Sawyer had basketball games at Trussville Baptist Church overlapping with baseball tryouts Along with basketball, Sawyer played in a little baseball tournament with Coach Pat Smith's team the weekend of February 19th. It was so COLD. This was a little to early for a baseball tournament...but the boys enjoyed it. They don't care if it is cold when there is baseball. The basketball gym was so warm.....and then to the cold ball park. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr; lots of frozen parents/grandparents along with ballteam. Munchkin Cole Davis spent lots of time with us while his mother had photo shoots. This was lots of fun for us. Cole keeps us doing fun things. Kim, Captured Moments by Kim, found It difficult to do shoots or edit with a busy little guy around. We love every minute we are with him. He is learning something new all the time. He loves playing baseball....wonder why? Vestavia High Rebels Baseball Team was practicing and started their 2010 games. Now we know where February went!

SPECIAL HAPPY BIRTHDAYS GRANDSONS

Image
Very Happy Birthday wishes to Dustin Schollian on February 19th who is turning 28 and Russell Schollian on the 22nd, turing 26.
These boys are sons of Paula. Only seems like yesterday, that I was going to their little league games, school functions, graduations , vacations and fun things with these little guys.
There is exactly 20 years difference in age of Denise's two sons Preston & Sawyer, and Dustin and Russell. As Ken and I reflect on these years, we ask, where has all the time gone?
Dustin and Russell, Happy Birthday and look forward to a Biloxi trip real soon.
Picture: Russell on left, Dustin on Right.
Image Just had my annual mammogram with surgical oncologist and everything was very normal. I am so blessed. I have been a survivor now for 8 wonderful years. What a great report. Don't forget my female friends and family....it is very important that we have an annual mammogram. Early detection on a mammogram at ACIPCO saved my life. Male breast cancer is also involved in over 8% of male's in U.S. Men need to watch for any change in your breast or nipple discharge. Immediately go to your doctor. Men don't usually get attention to this until it has metastasized. Everyone needs an annual check up. We can survive. Support Susan Komen and Relay for Life fundraisers coming up in the Spring and Fall. We must stamp out breast cancer...and keep searching for the cure.

Basket Ball Season for Preston and Sawyer Caine

On January 9, 2010, we were at the Trussville First Baptist ChurchUpward Program Basketball opening. It was 10 degrees on the outside, but warm and exciting inside the gym. Sawyer played at 9:30 and Preston at 11:30 Not enought time to do anything but hang around and watch the 10:30 teams play. Before every game. the cheerleaders and team players are annouced. All the players and cheerleaders enjoy having this individual attention as part of the teams. This is where we will proably spend every Saturday morning until the end of February. March comes baseball with both boys. The Upward Program teaches fellowship, sportmanship, skill building and that every child is a winner no matter what the score . Video clips to follow.

Congraulations Donna on your recent retirement

My sister-n-law Donna Williams ( Sonny) celebrated retirement the first of January from Social Security Administration. She also celebrated a birthday on January 6th. She has enjoyed spending lots of time at the hunting club and killed her first deer this year... A birthday, retirement and kill a big deer what a way to start your retirement. Hoped I could find a picture of Donna and the deer but it must have gotten deleted from my pictures. Congratulations on your retirement... glad to have you join us . This retirement life is great.
