Back in January I wrote a post about how I thought there were four words that would keep Sarah Palin out of the White House. Three short months later I believe we’ve just witnessed confirmation.

The most horrific event in USA’s history since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in southern California (edit: ok really it’s in Hawaii – not SoCal – author suffered mild brain fart – apologises profusely!) almost seventy years ago was hands down the bombing of the Twin Towers almost ten years ago. While most of us weren’t witnesses to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, most everyone reading this will have been witness to the fall of the Twin Towers in NYC. Then we witnessed a White House Administration change all the rules of war and most of the rules of peace in a massive effort to find and capture the man responsible for the heinous crime against American civilians. And we let it happen. We gave in to fear and allowed mob rule to colour everything we knew to be true about humanity.

And as the years have tumbled by and the manhunt turned middle eastern war wore on, the changes we’d backed began to make less and less sense. And just as the term Weapons of Mass Destruction became the punchline for late night television humour, along comes a president who understood the importance of diplomacy, the relevance of patience and who could work for our country without always needing to grab a headline and pat himself on the back.

President Barack Obama accomplished in 19 short months what the Bush administration (and actually the Clinton Administration before him) could not do. He used his position as POTUS and his art of diplomacy to guide a team of loyal, patriotic, intelligent military experts to work with otherwise skeptic if not hostile foreign outlets to find, capture and kill the elusive Osama bin Laden.

So while Donald Trump and Sarah Palin are busily puffing their hairdos and beating their chests while publicly disrespecting and recruiting unpatriotic behaviour towards our seated president, the man was quietly and determinedly – just getting the job done.

Sarah Palin tweeted thanks to the soldiers who performed this miraculous task – but not one word of kindness or praise was extended to the Commander in Chief – the man who ultimately made the miracle happen. Then she logged onto Facebook and wrote:

A Grateful Nation

by Sarah Palin on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 4:30pm

Americans tonight are united in celebration and gratitude. God bless all the brave men and women in our military and our intelligence services who contributed to carrying out the successful mission to bring Bin Laden to justice and who laid the groundwork over the years to make this victory possible.  It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of these brave Americans who relentlessly hunted down our enemy.

This is a victory for the American people, for the victims who were heartlessly murdered on September 11 and in Al Qaeda’s other numerous attacks, and for all the peace-loving people of the world.

May God bless our troops and our intelligence services, and God bless America!

– Sarah Palin

“…who laid the groundwork over the years to make this happen…” Who would this be exactly? Seems to me a lot of work went into undoing the groundwork previously laid by the former Republican administration SO this could finally happen. And excuse me for being blunt but considering Sarah Palin had NOT ONE THING TO DO with this successful mission, her unsolicited praise seems feigned and fatuous. Oh and by the way – whoever actually wrote this Facebook rant seems to be unfamiliar with Arabic protocal. The name is bin Laden, not Bin Laden. Osama bin Laden. There’s actually a purpose for this. Look it up. No reason to be disrespectful to an entire nation just because this man deserved our contempt.

Dear Ex-half Governor Sarah Palin
You have the manners of a pig. Your tweet commending the soldiers and not their commanding officer made you look small. The fact you felt the need to write a follow-up in Facebook only served to make you look even smaller and just a bit pompous. But most of all, Ms. Quitter from Alaska,  your continual inability to form the words “Good Job Mr. President” is ultimately going to keep you from the White House. You betcha!

Dear President Obama,

Thank you.

From the actual grateful nation…

You had to know someone was going to do this… I laughed so hard there are still tears in my eyes!  And it’s just in time for Thanksgiving too!

Sarah Palin wants to be President of the United States and has a bit over two million Facebook fans to prove it.

On the other hand, President Barack Obama already IS President of the United States, has over 11.6 million fans on Facebook and doesn’t have to prove a thing. Unlike Sarah’s Facebook page which is  a steady stream of whining rants proffering lots of criticism and few solutions, President Obama’s page is filled with optimism for the country’s future and gives a positive take on life inside the White House.

President Obama’s Facebook page is well structured, gives lots of daily and weekly updates on his schedule, positions, goals, obstacles, etc.  There are heaps of short videos to view, helpful government links to services and this week, there’s the special bonus of an announcement from Michelle Obama, encouraging everyone to sign a birthday card for the President. He will turn 49 on 4 August 2010 and she provides this link to a very thoughtful birthday message.

You do need a USA zip code to sign. (Shh dont tell anyone but I used my daughters!)

Another feature I especially like  is a series of weekly video clips called West Wing Week. They are a change of pace from the heavy, critical reports we get on the President from the maintream media. It’s a pleasure to watch him in action and reinforces why we voted for him.

This week’s chapter is titled Men in Blue Jumpsuits:

With all the bad press he gets, it’s nice to see our President’s  accomplishments emphasized and watch a running record of how many campaign promises he actually keeps. Compared to Sarah’s page of gloom and doom messages, President Obama’s Facebook page is a breath of fresh air.

And in a world filled with pollution, we need all the fresh air we can get 🙂

========== UPDATE ==========

Organizing For America (OFA) have sent follow up letters to those who signed President Obama’s birthday card. Volunteers across the nation are organizing events from now until November to encourage voters to get out and vote. These birthday parties are one such type of event.

An interactive map [click here] shows where the parties will be held. Enter a zip code, city or state and the user is directed to the nearest planned party(s).

From the site:
Volunteers nationwide will hold birthday parties and use the occasion to recruit new OFA volunteers. Each new volunteer will help get more first-time 2008 voters back to the polls in November. And with so much more on our agenda, and tight races from Florida to Alaska, we don’t have a moment to lose.

What a neat gizmo! I plugged in cities for all my rellies and friends. Yes, even the Republican ones! Ok they probably won’t attend but it was still quite fun to see all the places that popped up. (There’s one just a mile from my oldest daughter on Saturday the 7th put on by a chapter of YES WE CANvass… They look very organized.)

Speaking for myself, I get bogged down in all the whining put out by Sarah, the Tea Partiers and new Republicans. So much discontent and fear in their speeches and messages. Finding my way to sites filled with workable solutions instead of finger-pointing has been encouraging. There are – in fact – more people out there who see through Sarah and her cohorts than follow her blindly.

The trick is, to get them all to the polls because the only way to guarantee Sarah Palin never wins another election is to put some old-fashioned elbow grease into it and work to see that everybody votes. So even from my perch in Australia, I will be doing my part. Please use the OFA link above to find out how you can do yours 🙂

There’s just too much to lose to do nothing…

========== UPDATE 2 ==========

Writers at the Washington Post are critical of the Obama birthday card, making the claim that it’s just a ruse for fundraising. The reasoning comes from noting that a person’s 49th birthday is insignificant (the writer backs this arguement at length by presenting former presidents who have turned 50 while in office and the huge bashes that marked the occasion while none publicized their 49th birthdays) and that the site sports a donation button for 2010 campaign contributions along with a call for volunteers to help get people to the polls.

To be honest, while visiting the Organizing For Obama website I hadn’t really paid attention to the donation button. Why would I? Donation buttons are everywhere. And it’s a bit like the pot calling the kettle black for a Republican to cry foul when SarahPAC, Sarah Palin’s Facebook page, RNC websites, other Republican PACs all and each have the same donation button on every one of their sites as well.

As far as the complaint that using President Obama’s 49th birthday as a cover for gathering supporters is (1) inappropriate and (2) has more to do with gathering votes for the president’s re-election in 2012 than campaigning for Democrats in 2010 is just well, sour grapes.

There’s no rule of etiquette preventing any birthday year from being a huge bash. That number is irrelevant. The number of people wanting in on the celebration is more to the point. And when you read the article you’ll begin to get a sense of how many hundreds of backyard bbq’s, potluck suppers, picnics and block parties have been carefully planned and advertised via this one, simple bithday tradition of signing a card. It’s brilliant in its simplicity.

And if these nationwide birthday parties prove successful and help the Democrats create a venue for future vote-gathering on top of garnering votes for Democrats in 2010 so what? Republicans have their political strategies and we Democrats have ours. And while I hesitate to gloat… our strategies have put Barack Obama in The white House. Republicans have – who, again?

We The People have endured the media’s reporting of Republican opinion as if it were fact and the overly-televised nationalization of phoney, mismanaged, disorganized Tea Parties for more than a year now. It’s all a bit stale. We can do with a little cake and coffee 🙂

Sarah’s ghost-writer is at it again on Facebook…

Last summer I stood on the grassy bank of an Alaskan waterway that was teeming with salmon to watch part of Alaska’s brown bear population forage, fight, feed, and fend off enemies to survive. I joined Fish and Game biologists to observe 42 of these majestic wild animals all within eyesight, all at once. Even though I’ve lived all my life in the “Last Frontier,” I still find days like that absolutely fascinating! And I swear the hardest workers on the water were those “mama bears.”

Blah, blah blah, blah blah blah – and then…

“Now, scanning the political landscape, here’s a new “Mama Grizzlies” field report! There are great guys running for office all over the place, but I hope you will join me in supporting three more bold Commonsense Conservative women who are willing to put it all the line to get our country back on track: Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Star Parker, and Mary Fallin.”

So the whole ‘bear’ theme has a point and I get it. Women should embrace women in politics. And, quite admittedly, I can think of several reasons why some women would make better politicians than some of the men I’ve observed in office but – being deified by Sarah Palin is not among them.

In fact, after the ensuing descriptions of the three candidates are given, one of Sarahs ‘FB Fans’ had this to say:

(I left the top one just for chuckles – it’s the second one that should be carefully read)

 Image

How about that! I I guess people have paid attention to how Carly Fiorina wormed her way into California politics on the end of Sarah Palin’s fishing pole and aren’t so sure they want the same thing to happen in their home state… and… are actively calling her out on her bad choices. I’m loving it!

However… and here’s the ‘but’… I’m having a wee bit of trouble with the timeline in the first FB paragraph. During the summer of 2009, (you remember, the summer she quit her job as governor to ride off into the sunset, stopping at Lake Lucille just long enough to feed the fish with her wedding ring to write, co-write, oversee the writing, edit the writing, have a facelift and boob job while someone else did the writing of her book) when did she have time to go off with some biologists and watch bears feed on a river teeming with salmon?

And if she did, where was her entourage to capture the whole governor-ny experience on film? I couldn’t find anything at ADN. Google turned up stacks of references to Sarah vs. polar bears and biologists but nowhere to be found are any references to the then Gov.Sarah having an outing with any fish & Game biologists.

Does Alaska’s summer start earlier than June? When do the bears hunt salmon? How close is ‘within eyesight’?

Sarah announced her intent to quit her governorship of Alaska on 3 July 2009. Leading up to this main event were all the kerfuffles between Sarah and the unhappy legislators, including the whoop-dee-do over her AG nominees W.A.R. and ‘ol whatshisface…  There’s the birth of the Alaska Fund Trust because ‘all her time was devoted to answering whimsical ethics complaints’ but I neither recall an outing like her FB ghostie describes, nor can I find any post or article even remotely similar to it’s description.

Ok people… who’s got a copy of Sarah’s schedule from last summer? Show me the bears!
