It's Early for This!....

It's still August, right?  I mean, just a few days left...but still August.

Fall...real Fall...is weeks away.

Image

We've had more rain this year than last...LOTS more rain.
That means...MORE LEAVES.

Image

Lately, it's been pretty dry.  Maybe that's why we have this, already.

Image

And, this has been our daily routine.  Yes, I said DAILY.

Maybe this leaf fall is from the stress of the dryness.  It's early for the Fall...uh...fall.

Image

We're not going to run out of leaves, anytime soon.

Oh well...it's good exercise.

Winding Down....

Image

The summer is winding down.
This summer of 2012 is SO much better than the summer of 2011.

This last week has been 'cool', in comparison to last year.
We had a little rain....enough to fill the rain barrels.
I'm always amazed at how little that takes.

Kids are going back to school.
Then Labor Day and the 'official' Summer's End.

We're not fooled.  We know the heat will return.  That doesn't really end here until October.

All in all...we'll take this kind of summer.

Have a Great Weekend...

Sunny Days....

We always have a lot of sunny days in August, here in Central Texas.

Sunny days bring on some hot weather blooms.

Image
The self-sown zinnias in the veggie garden are blooming nicely.

Image
I like zinnias.

Image
They're happy flowers.

Image
They make nice little bouquets, to brighten the indoors.

Image
The gold cosmos has reseeded itself.  There will be some sunny blooms soon.

Image
And, the Coral Vine is finally blooming.  Love these pretty blooms.

Image
As you can see, it's not exactly a FULL vine.  I think it needs more sun.
So, another move this fall.

We're forecast to have some rain this weekend.  I hope they're right.  We need it.
And, the 'cold front' is supposed to bring cooler temps.....high 90s..haha.
We probably won't need jackets.
But, I guess that's better than 102.

GBBD and Foliage Follow-Up...August, 2012...

The middle of the month sneaked up on me this time.

Image
 begonia and aztec grass

So...not for the first time...I'm combining
Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
&
Foliage Follow-Up.

It's hot and dry here.  Again, I didn't think I'd find much to show you.
These two memes are good for me.  I really SEE what's there.
I see it every day.  But, I'm always moaning that not much is going on.

So, here goes.  I'm going to try this with few words.
We'll see how that works.

What Gall!!!....

So, just recently I was having fun pulling weeds in the veggie garden.
It was a normal HOT summer day....with a bit of humidity.

{Don't you love doing those chores on days like that?}

So, I took a short break, for a some water and to catch my breath.

Image
This is where I do that.
Like every area here, this has a name.  It's the Garden Grove....because it's by the Veggie Garden.

Image
Looking up into the Live Oaks trees above my head, I saw this.

Image
Looking closely, you see these little bead kind of things.
There are thousands of them in the Live Oaks around here.

Image
They're almost pretty.  But, I knew they weren't normal.

So, I did some research.
I found some information at the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension site.

Seems this is Gall, and it's caused by insects.  Probably a type of wasp.
Wow!  There must have been a swarm, that we didn't see.

According to this site:

"....gall on oaks typically do not kill an established oak.
If galls are localized or limited, it is possible to remove the galls for aesthetic purposes.
Otherwise, do not worry too much about it."

I read one other thing that said it occurs more often on trees that are stressed.
The trees around here have been really stressed, from the drought.

I worry a lot about the trees.  They're one of the big reasons we love this place.
But, looks like I don't have to lose sleep over this one.

Back to pulling weeds.
Say...why is it, weeds grow so well, when other things are just barely hanging on?

Another garden mystery.

Morning Light.....

Ah...August in Texas.
That means HOT and HUMID....and, little to NO rain.

So, there is watering to be done.
Since I'm so smart (ha!), I have lots of containers.  That means watering every day.

Morning...before the Death Star of the sun gets too high...is the best time.

Image

Sometimes though, you need to stop and LOOK at the new day.

Image

LOOK at the way the light plays on the flowers.

Image

LOOK at the way the light shines through the leaves.

Image

LOOK at the way the light sets a pot of grass aglow.

Image

LOOK at the way the light glistens on bubbling water.

Image

LOOK at the way the light welcomes us into the new day.

This is the day the Lord has made,
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

300....

For a lot of great bloggers out there, 300 posts isn't much.

But, for Patchwork Garden, it's a milestone.

Image

Anyone who really knows me, knows that I always have plenty to say.

Image

But, having something to say that someone wants to hear....that's the trick.

Image

It helps to live in a place that provides lots of subjects to talk about.

Image

So, I'll keep on trying to keep your attention.

Image

Hmmmm....what to talk about next?

Thanks for helping to keep me going.
300 posts.
And, still going....

Playin' in the Sprinkler....

We don't have much grass here.  Just a narrow strip, through the fenced yard.
Nothing near the size of our old place, with front and back the standard suburban lawns.

Image

Mr. P. can mow this with our push mower (man powered), in about 10 minutes.

But, it does have to be watered sometimes.

Image

And, we use a sprinkler.  It goes round and round, with an upward shot of water in the middle.

Image

The birds adore it.  They come flocking to the wet limbs of the trees and have a great time.

Image

It's hard to get a good photo of the Chickadees and Titmouses.  They flit in and out of the leaves, and are just hard to catch in focus.
But, I managed to get some of this cardinal.  He spent quite a while enjoying his shower.

Image

And, the sun glinting on the drops of water make an interesting pattern.

Entertainment in the garden.
