Alan Sewell and Amazon...
Whilst my new N scale 'Austerity' is unlikely to remain as 'Amazon', Alan has kindly shared photos of the prototype, which he found at the NCB Harrington Pit in the summer of 1968... Lowca, August 1968. Alan Sewell photo. National Coal Board - North Western Div'n Harrington No.X Pit and Washery, Lowca, Cumberland Gauge: Standard Date of Visit: 21 August 1968 Three locos in steam and working. Amazon 0-6-0ST Vulcan Foundry 5297 of 1945 shunting empty BR hoppers over the level crossing and NCB wagons out to the tip. The other end loco was another Austerity Vulcan Foundry 5282 of 1945 standing near to the level crossing and waiting for loaded wagons to work down to BR. The locos were in a very dirty condition, and the railway was quite run down. A number of United Steel Company (USC) wagons were noted on the connection to USC’s Workington Steel Works via the “Lowca Light Railway”. Lowca, August 1968. Alan Sewell photo. Lowca, August 1968.
