Ossett Brewery, West Yorkshire
Posted on: October 4, 2013
I popped over to Ossett earlier today for a chat with head brewer Paul, I’d been tweet-chatting off and on with @PaulSpencer1973 of Ossett Brewery, for a while so asked if it would be ok to come over and have a look around. Ossett Brewery was started in 1997 and Paul has been brewing there for 13 years, their current brew-kit came from a cider brewery in Sweden and is 40BBL in size.
As well as being a brewer with a passion for beer & brewing at Ossett, Paul also oversees three other Microbreweries under the Ossett group, quite a task!
The Copper & Grist case (Malt Hopper):

Another shot of the copper:

Ossett have 3 different types of fermenting vessel, 9 in total if my memory serves:

A slightly blurry shot of the mash Tun and underback:

Three of the Fermenters made by Moeschle:

The Mash Tun was just about to be dug out from the first of todays brews:

Their cask washing area:

This is their Microdat cask filler, it can cope with 80-casks per hour, and doses both Finings Adjunct (Auxiliary Finings) and Isinglass Finings:

This is the conditioning room at Ossett, quite a line-up of vessels, these are also made by Moeschle:

The very front left of this shot is their Isinglass tank where they mix and store it:

I took a few home-brewed beers for Paul hope he enjoys them and got a few back from him:

Do check out their website and their funky little promo vid.
It was interesting to find out that our own Head Brewer/Owner ‘Tony Gartland’ at Saltaire Brewery actually did some work experience at Ossett back when he was training at BrewLab before starting his own brewery.
Its been good meeting Paul and some of the guys and thanks very much for taking the time to show me round, Cheers

Stop the beer duty escalator
Responsible department: Her Majesty’s Treasury
Every year, the beer tax escalator increases the tax on beer by 2% above the rate of inflation, thus adding considerably more pressure on the British pub, the cornerstone of many of our communities. Removing the beer duty escalator at the next budget will help keep beer more affordable and go a long way to supporting the institution that is – the great British pub.
Going to the pub is a core British tradition and so is enjoying great beer. If you want to continue enjoying your fresh pint in your local pub then it’s crucial that you support our campaign to grind the beer duty tax escalator to a halt.
If we don’t show our support for the great British pub, we risk losing more pubs and more jobs within our local communities.Support great beer in the great British pub and sign our e-petition now….. British Pubs Need You.

Don’t forget if you feel strongly about the issues surrounding the cost of beer and brewing its really easy to write to your MP to give your personal thoughts – www.writetothem.com pop your postcode in to find your local one.
York Brewery Tour
Posted on: September 11, 2011
An informative tour for people who know nothing or very little about the brewing process, a fair amount of talk with malt munching and hop sniffing followed by a fairly short tour around the viewing gallery above the mash tun & copper.
The bar / Brewery Tap is a quaint rustic affair, it was nice to talk to one of their brewers (front left in their photo above) while we were having our beers, Nice to meet you.
Had an enjoyable pint of Guzzler at the ‘Last Drop Inn’, one of their pubs, here are the brewery’s beers.
Top left is the Grist case (Malt Hopper) with chute leading into the Mash Tun at the Back right, 20 Barrel copper boiler in the front right:

Looking down thru the viewing windo into the fermenters:

Here is what Tripadvisor has to say about them. Find them on Twitter @Yorkbrewery
