Burger Planet is a company that is implementing change for the better. As a PR team we are looking to put into action key new features that will improve the overall direction and outlook of the company, as well as increase future revenue and put us in better standing in relation with our current fast food competition. The new strengths we plan to focus on include; New healthy menu options that will boost sales among middle aged (30-49 yrs) health conscious women (who control the family budget); Introducing Jayne Petersen who is a strong spokesperson because of her connection to our target audience and her knowledge on healthy eating, focusing also on her relationship to the well known and respected Opel Whitcomb who our target audience spends time watching on television. To support our points and ensure success will have conducted research on other fast food companies (i.e. McDonalds and Wendy’s) and researched the needs and habits of middle aged women, who we are putting our focus on as our target customer.
After company research we have discovered that middle aged women are the most concerned with living a health conscious life style and they are likely to feed their children in the same healthy manner. For the last four decades obesity has been on the rise, due highly to unhealthy diet paired with in activity. Research shows that two thirds of all American’s are obese; including 35% of our target– middle aged women who battle obesity. The consequences from this type of lifestyle include heart disease, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Further research estimates that about 112,000 deaths are associated with obesity each year in the US. Burger Planet wants to be a company that decreases these numbers and that is why we are implementing a wide variety healthy food options to our customers.
We believe the best way to introduce and return revenue from our healthier menu is to compete with the other fast food providers. Our competitors have introduced healthy options as a way to avoid law suits. We will introduce it because of our tradition in good customer service; and hope for a better quality of life for our customers. Research on rival companies, including McDonalds and Wendy’s, show a significantly high amount of calories in their so called “healthy “menu items. For example, McDonald’s Southwest chicken salad contains has as many as 430 calories. By making our healthy menu items lower in caloric intake without sacrificing the taste we can encourage customers to eat at Burger Planet and in turn increase profit. While we do focus on middle aged women, we will also enforce that we still maintain our classics that have put Burger Planet on the map including the traditional “Burger and fries” to still appeal to and keep profit from our male demographic and original followers, as well as to remind customers that a variety in eating is still encouraged. To reinforce this plan we bring up our next important step, introducing Jayne Petersen.
Burger planet does not only want to provide healthy food options, we want to educate our customers about the benefits of nutritious eating, and teach them how to balance their diet by bringing in health guru Jayne Petersen. As a icon for fitness, Jayne will provide the company with a face to our healthy addition. Petersen herself has voiced “Burger Planet has been a leader in the Quick Service Restaurant industry in offering healthy menu choices. The company believes in encouraging customers to live healthier, active lifestyles and I have spent my life trying to teach women that lesson.” Our target customer will relate perfectly to Petersen and respect her for her well known accomplishment of helping celebrity Opel Whitcomb lose 75. Opel Whitcomb will again relate to our target customer because of her celebrity status and time the customers spend watching and taking advice from her on television. Having Petersen as a voice for Burger Planet will be inspiring to customers and allow them to trust our menu options. Petersen communicates a diet of moderation and variation in eating, which is exactly what Burger Planet is doing with keeping the traditional items and enhancing the menu with new healthy additions.
Burger Planet has always had a solid foundation in customer service and tradition of providing families with what they want in a fast food service. “Burger Planet cares about its customers. For more than seven decades, the company has succeeded because it put customers first. We listen to our customers. And our customers desire healthy choices, of which we offer many,” said James E. Muellenbach III, CEO of Burger Planet. By implementing healthy eating choices Burger planet will be coming up to date with the advances in health and encouraging our customers to provide themselves a healthier way of life.
Burger Planet, headquartered in Gary, Indiana, was founded in 1934 by James E. Muellenbach I, who is now retired. They currently have 8,921 franchises in 17 countries and 48,272 employees. They continue to lead the Quick Service Restaurant Industry as they have served 52 billion customers and counting

Letter to Cousin
Attention: Tony Hill
Date: Sept 3, 2009
Dear Tony,
I am crunched for time today but I felt it was important that I write and tell you about a current decision I am making in my life. After alot of thought and frustration I have decided that I am changing my major at Utah State University from Broadcast Journalism, to Public Relations. I know that you are a freshman this year, so you basically have no idea what I am talking about, let me explain further.
Public Relations can be explained as the bridge to information from a company, organzation, or individual to the public. The public includes anyone who could or ever has had an opinion or interest in the client . PR is an instrument to represent ideas or images to others in specific ways. As a PR major I could become the voice of a company and represent them in the best light possible. Public relations takes alot of flexiblity and creativity. I think this fits me well because you cousin know how I love be versitle and appeal to different types of people. After making the decision to switch to PR I am thrilled to get into learning more about it and really use my personality strengths to better my future career.
Thanks for taking the time to read about my new venture. I hope that you better understand what Public Relations is all about.
Your favorite cousin,
Whitney Sant
Welcome and enjoy!
Greetings! My name is Whitney Jo Sant, I currently attend Utah State University, where I am majoring in Public Relations. This blog has been created to post assignments and thoughts for my Writing for PR course. Feel free to browse, comment, agree or disagree. Cheers.
