It was in the back alley that Tommy stole a kiss from Ella, the girl next door. From the moment her family moved into the apartment building, he’d felt an instant connection. She was pretty, smart, and full of life.
The kiss was timid and full of apprehension. For this unanticipated move, she slapped him hard.
“Is that all you can do?” she smirked.
He was stunned. Had Ella not grabbed his arm, he would’ve almost run crying to Mama.
“But it was a good start,” she added.
Relieved, Tommy realized he’d better improve next time, preferably without getting slapped.

After all these years, the store looked exactly as Josh remembered. As a young teenager, he’d worked here, stocking shelves and running errands.
Mrs. Smith was behind the counter when he walked in.
“Hello, Mrs. Smith! Do you remember me?”
She stared at him from head to toe, her eyes widening in surprise. “Josh, it’s nice to see you again!”
Josh couldn’t help but recall the night he became a man. He was working in the back room when she’d made a pass at him.
“Hey, Liam!” she suddenly yelled. “Come over here! I want you to meet your dad!”
