S: Luke 4:32 (NIV) "They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority."
O: The people recognized that Jesus' teaching was somehow different from the other rabbis they had heard. There was power in his message and in his presence. This was more than observing Jesus' confidence or oratory skills. It was something supernatural, confirmed by the miracles he performed.
A: What was it that produced the sense of authority in Jesus' message? Of course, he is the Messiah, but notice how many times in this chapter the author references Jesus being full of the Holy Spirit. Three times prior to this verse, the author references the presence of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus. It is not only the work of the Holy Spirit in/through Jesus, but also His work in convicting/convincing the listeners as well. When anyone who has the Holy Spirit speaks the Word of God, he or she speaks with authority. That is comforting and encouraging, but also challenging. God has called me to speak his words to others, not in my own authority, but in his. That is obedience; the result is up to the work of the Holy Spirit. I want to be more faithful and consistent in speaking God's Words, in the power of His Spirit and trusting Him to do the work of convincing and convicting, not me.
P: Lord, help me to walk in the Spirit and speak in His power, not my own. Help me to leave the results to You. You alone have all authority and Your Word is authoritative. Let me rest in that truth. Amen.
