S: Scripture:Choose one thing that stood out. O: Observation:What does it say (context, audience, meaning, etc.)? A: Application:What principles apply to me? How should my life be different moving forward? P: Prayer:Speak to God about what He showed you.
S: 2 Chronicles 32:10 (& parallel in 2 Kings 18:19) (NIV): "On what are you basing your confidence?"
O: The messenger for the King of Assyria poses this question to Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem while the city is under siege by the Assyrians. The messenger proceeds to name cities and nations and their gods who could not save them from being conquered by Assyria. Why should the Jews and their God be any different? Their God would fail them, just as the others did.
A: Hezekiah had placed his confidence in the right place. When God slaughtered nearly 200,000 Assyrian warriors in their sleep, He showed the king of Assyria that He is not like those other gods. Hezekiah points out the difference in 2 Kings 19:18 (NIV) "for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men's hands." That's quite different than the God who is Creator of the universe, Maker of heaven and earth, the One who made humans. I wonder what gods made by humans I am tempted to place my confidence in? James cautions the rich who place their confidence in their wealth. I sometimes find I place my confidence in myself - my gifts, strengths, abilities. Sometimes I place my confidence in others, only to be disappointed when they don't meet my expectations or fail me. There is only One in whom I can and should confidently place my trust. Wealth comes from the Lord. Talents and skills come from the Lord. Even friends are gifts from God. Why should I place my trust in the gift instead of the Giver? Why would I trust in the created instead of the Creator. Only the God of the Bible has the power to deliver me from the evil one, from this world, and from myself. Placing my confidence in anyone or anything else is foolish.
P: Lord help me to place my confidence only in you, not just in the tough times when it seems like there's no other choice, but also in the easy times, when I might be tempted to think too highly of myself or my circumstances. You are my Rock and Fortress. You are the Giver of every good gift. You alone hold the power of life and death for eternity. There is no One better in Whom I should place my confidence. Help me to remember that and to act on it.
