S:
Isaiah 1:17-19a (NLT) Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the orphan. Fight for the rights of widows. "Come, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow.Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool. If you will only obey me and let me help you.

O:
"Let me help you." The people of Judah were committing all kinds of sin. Their leaders were totally corrupt. God had already begun punishing them for their idolatry and treachery by allowing foreign armies to come against them, yet at the same time He pleads with them to turn to Him so He can help them. God is begging to save them. It appears they don't want to be saved from themselves.

A:
God sounds like a parent trying to reason with a wayward, stubborn, foolish, self-absorbed child. But there's one huge difference: God really does have the power to forgive, to redeem, to blot out the past and give us a fresh start. In desperation, a parent may promise such a thing, trying to give a child hope, but the reality of the choices often make the hope seem distant or false. With God's offer, however, there is true hope because of Jesus' sacrifice.

When God says, "Learn to do good." From whom do I learn? Jesus showed me what it looked like to do good. He is the example. And the Holy Spirit will teach me - but only if I let Him help me.

P:
God, I want you to help me. I want to learn from you, Jesus, how to do good. Lord, please don't let my stubborn self go my own way. I know the path of self leads to destruction and heartache, yet it is so comfortable, familiar, and easy. Thank you for your forgiveness when I choose self. Thank you also for not giving up on me. Make me like Jesus. Show me opprtunities to seek justice, help orphans and widows, and point people to Christ and not myself. Amen.
