S: Luke 11:31-32 (NIV) The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now onegreater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
I'm departing from my normal format here because I recently read an excellent article on a topic Jesus raises in these two verses. The article beautifully explains the superiority and supremacy of Christ over every other hero of the Judeo-Christian tradition and Scriptures. I read the "poem" below in Revive Magazine (Life Action Ministries, Winter 2010, Volume 40, Issue 4, p. 4). The article states that the words written were, "taken from Tim Keller's message, 'Preaching the Gospel'."
Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is imputed to us. Jesus is the true and better Abel who, though innocently slain, has blood that cries out, not for our condemnation but for acquittal. Jesus is the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go out into the void to create a new people of God. Jesus is the true and better Isaac who was not just offered up by His Father on the mount, but was truly sacrificed for us. Jesus is the true and better Joseph who, at the right hand of the King, forgives those who betrayed and sold Him, and uses His new power to save them. Jesus is the true and better Moses who stands in the gap between the people and God, and who mediates a new covenant. Jesus is the true and better Rock of Moses who, struck with the rod of God's justice, now gives us water in the desert. Jesus is the true and better Job, the truly innocent sufferer, who then intercedes for and saves His foolish friends. Jesus is the true and better David whose victory becomes His people's victory, though they never lifted a stone to accomplish it themselves. Jesus is the true and better Esther who left His ultimate and heavenly palace, and who didn't just risk His life but gave it to save His people. Jesus is the true and better Jonah who was cast out into the storm so that we could be brought in. Jesus is the real Passover Lamb, innocent, perfect, helpless, slain so the angel of death will pass over us. Jesus is the true temple, the true prophet, the true priest, the true king, the true sacrifice, the true lamb, the true light, the true bread.
I also agree with the magazine editor's recommendation to "watch the video by Dr. S.M. Lockridge entitled 'That's My King' as he speaks about the greatness of our Lord." (Ibid., p. 9) Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzqTFNfeDnE
P: Lord, Jesus help me to worship You in spirit and in truth, including the truth about Who You are and what You have done, are doing, and will do. Amen.

Scripture reading for July 31st: Isaiah 63,64; Psalm 107; John 2 Read it online here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%2063,64;%20Psalms%20107;%20John%202
S: John 2:25 (NLT) "No one needed to tell him about human nature."
O: Jesus knew that the people were fickle. He knew that people cheer you when you're winning and kick you when you're down. They liked him for standing up to the religious leaders. They loved him for performing miracles. He experienced the best and worst from people first hand while he was on the earth. But that's not the only reason he knew about human nature. He experienced it within himself. A verse earlier states "he didn't trust them." That reflects human nature. In the Isaiah passage for today, speaking of the Messiah, Isaiah writes, "In all their suffering he also suffered" (Isaiah 63:9a NLT). He not only experienced suffering, but he also got angry; he wept; he was tempted. The list goes on. Jesus knew human nature well because he was fully human. That's part of what made him the perfect sacrifice for our sins against God.
A: It's kind of scary to know that Jesus knows what I'm like. He knows what I'm like on the inside, in the dark places. He knows everything about me. Does he mistrust me like he mistrusted the people in John 2? Asking that question gets me sidetracked from a far more important truth. He fully knows me and yet still fully loves me. He fully knows me and yet there is no fear of rejection from him. That's almost too difficult for me to begin to wrap my mind around. That's where Jesus' divine nature shines through. He loves with the supernatural love of God. He forgives and extends grace that can only come from a loving God. There's nothing about me that God can't handle, and his love doesn't come with performance strings attached. That is truly amazing love and amazing grace. That makes me want to know him more and live for him more and become more like him. His love and acceptance invite me to confess to him more completely and ask for his help more often and rely on his strength more fully.
P: Jesus, thank you for knowing everything about me. I know I don't have to try to hide from you. In fact, I can't. So help me to come to you with everything, seeking forgiveness, strength, wisdom, and grace. Thank you for becoming like me. Thank you even more for making me more like you. Amen
