Diversity
Prison Journalism Project was founded in March 2020 by two veteran journalists and women of Asian descent, Yukari Iwatani Kane and Shaheen Pasha.
- PJP staff (including contractors and interns) currently comprises 64% who identify as women and 36% as men.
- All executive-level positions are held by women who identify as non-White.
- 43% of staff (including contractors and interns) are incarceration-impacted; 1 person is formerly incarcerated.
- 36% of staff (including contractors and interns) are BIPOC.
- Most PJP staff have personally experienced exclusion and believe in the necessity of inclusion, especially of marginalized communities.
- PJP leadership considers it top priority to further diversify its staff as we grow, through partnerships with independent non-profit journalism organizations and pending additional funding.
