To solve this, we need to

Begin with... well, 'BEGIN'!

And

Each number is going to match to a different letter of the alphabet, starting with B=1, E=2, G=3, I=4 and N=5.

We then must decipher what number relates to which letter by starting with 'BEGIN' and figuring out possible words from there.

So doing just that:

01 02 03 04 05 = BEGIN
01 02 04 05 03 = BEING
06 07 04 05 03 = CLING
06 07 04 08 01 = CLIMB
07 04 05 02 09 = LINER
09 04 05 03 10 = RINGS
10 11 04 05 03 = STING
10 12 04 05 03 = SWING
11 12 04 05 10 = TWINS
13 11 11 02 09 = OTTER
14 11 11 02 09 = UTTER
07 15 11 02 09 = LATER
16 02 08 13 05 = DEMON
17 15 07 04 16 = VALID

    $\begingroup$ Maybe I'm not catching on, so please bear with me. I understand that the second row contains the same numbers as the first row, just in a different order, so it's just a matter of rearranging BEGIN into BEING. No problem there. But the third row introduces new numbers, 06 and 07. How did you know they should be C and L, and not some other letters? Or did you have to look ahead to see what would work in later rows? $\endgroup$ Commented 23 hours ago

    $\begingroup$ @SlowMagic at the start, I got reveal spoilerclimb first, as that is literally the only word that fit the ??I?B arrangement (this website was super useful to find valid words). That then gave the 3rd line. I think from then you could do most of it a line at a time, but think there might be a couple of times I had to leave a line and come back to it yeah. For instance if there was a word where 2 letters could work, I'd leave it blank until one of the other words took one of the letters, then could backfill. Hope that makes a bit more sense? $\endgroup$ Commented 23 hours ago
