Loss to Alabama

Arkansas has lost to #2 ranked Alabama...again. Darn. Double darn. Before I talk about the game, I'll tell you about the other parts of our weekend. On Friday night we went to the annual Psi O rooftop party. Did you know my husband is a fraternity guy? We go every year because the food is free/good and the view is amazing. It was also fun to be there when David was the oldest (as in dental school years) finally. Here was our view from the party.

This morning I got up and went to our Sunday School women's brunch while David studied. When I got home I did a little housework until kick-off at 2:30. We were hopeful, but realistic going into the game. You always hope you can win, or at least compete on an even playing field when you play Alabama. Unfortunately we did neither. :( We were so disappointed. Alabama is just a better team. We were talking about how easy it would be to an Alabama fan...they're ALWAYS good. Always. Sometimes it's a little harder to to be an Arkansas fan. We are not always good (although we do believe we are good this year). The University of Arkansas is linked with the state of Arkansas though. So if we love our state (which we do), we will always love our team (even in defeat). The season has just begun and we still have very high hopes! Woo pig sooie!

After the game we were a little down, but true to form, our crazy animals cheered us up. That's why we have them! Deuce, as usual couldn't wait to play with the frisbee. When we have kids, will they cheer us up this much too?

Pretty dog.

Sooie got in on the cheering up too by climbing a tree. She was the most disappointed with the loss since she was named after the team. She pulled herself together though. :)

By the time we left the yard we were smiling again and ready to go get some pizza.

Fair Prayer

This has been a really good week so far. One of my good friends from church, Leah, absolutely made my day on Monday morning. At around 9:30 a.m. the door to my classroom opened, and my first thought was, "Wait, I didn't tell anyone they could go to the bathroom! Who is this?" And in walked Leah and her adorable daughter with a yummy Starbucks drink for me! Talk about a great surprise. What is better than enjoying a Starbucks you didn't know you were going to have?! Nothing. Leah was a teacher, so she knows how much little things like that matter in a day for a teacher.

On Tuesday night, David and I cooked dinner for our friends Jay and Katherine Thorpe! The Thorpes came over to celebrate Katherine's 26th birthday (even though it was last week). It was nice to enjoy some mid-week socializing with them.

As some of you may know, the Razorbacks play Alabama this weekend. We've been nervous all week. This is no small game, and it will be no small challenge to beat them. This week David and I remembered a funny "candid radio" that Craig O'Neil did one time. For those of you who don't know, Craig O'Neil was a Little Rock DJ that would prank call schools the week before the game. This candid call is pretty appropriate for this upcoming game. This call took place maybe 15 years ago? I hope my link works and I hope you find it as funny as we do.

I haven't really recorded any funny things that the kids in my class have been saying to me, so I thought I might let you in on some stuff. This is quite a funny group.

Boy: "Mrs. Rainwater?"
Me: "Yes?"
Boy: "I have pit sweat because I'm not allowed to wear deoderant yet."
Me: "Oh man."

Girl: "Mrs. Rainwater?"
Me: "Yes"
Girl: "Can you pray for my brother? He has really bad allergies and the skin on his leg is about to fall off."

A boy brought me a self-portrait, and in it, he was smoking...
Me: "Paul, what is this?" (pointing to the cigarette)
Paul: "Is my guy smoking?"
Me: "I don't know Paul. Didn't you draw this picture? Did you draw yourself smoking?"
Paul: "I'm not sure."

Girl: "Mrs. Rainwater, there is a frog right outside. Can I bring him inside and keep him in my lunch box?"
Me: "No."
Girl: "Are you serious?"
Me: "Yes. You can't bring a frog inside."
Girl: "Wow."

So those are just a few of the things I hear on a daily basis. Happy Thursday!

Sushi and Coffee

We love sushi and we love coffee, but we enjoyed them seperately this weekend! Our weekend fun kind-of started on Thursday night. Our gospel group usually meets on Thursdays, but we finished our last study, so we had a purely social night to celebrate. JJ and Mandy invited everyone to their house to make our own sushi! They had everything set up and were ready to teach everyone. None of the other couples had ever made their own either.

Image

We cut and sliced and had a great time!

First you cut all your ingredients up!

Image

Then you spread your rice on the seaweed and load in all your goodies.

And you get...

...some pretty legitimate looking sushi

Afterward we roasted some s'mores! The weather has turned cold on us and it's really starting to feel like fall.

On Friday night we stayed in and watched a movie. It was a tiring week and we literally laid around all Friday night after David did a little home repair work. We have recently found a leak that has bubbled some of our paint in the dining room. We think it's coming in from the satelite dish that's on our roof (unused by us and given as a "gift" from the previous owners). He did his best to fix it. Hopefully it will work and we can move on to fixing the wall of our dining room.

Dangerous roof-man!

Deuce was attentive. He didn't feel completely secure as to why David would be so high up!

Image

All done!

This morning we met some friends from our Sunday School class to go on a tour of the Roasterie! It was fun to see how it all worked...we're definitely Roasterie fans now. There were some random hats and a coffee bean to put your head in right inside the plant. We seized the opportunity and put on the random hats for a photo opportunity.

Guys too.

The whole group!

Afterward we went to eat lunch and then came home and relaxed for a little bit. It's been rainy and chilly here, so we're taking it slow too. David is studying this afternoon...yes, studying is back. He has registered for the first part of his second round of boards (confusing, I know), and he will take them at the end of November. Yikes! He'll do great I know. I have recently agreed to help out with the cheerleading program at school more again. Not being completely in charge like I was two years ago, but basically running practices and making up cheers. It helps to be compensated and to not have to go to classes at night. We've done a lot so far this weekend, and it's not over! Tonight we're going to Matt and Diana's house to hang out and watch the OU/Florida State game.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago today a terrible attack on America occurred. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 changed our country forever. We did not go home to Little Rock this weekend, but there was a football game there. The Razorback nation remembered 9/11 in a big way. Every other section of the stadium wore red/white and the student section wore blue, to create the look of an American Flag.

Image

The players also had a different Razorback logo.

Everyone says that you'll never forget where you were and what you were doing when it happened. I guess that's true, because David and I can remember it like it happened two days ago. I thought the blog might be a good place to record where we were, what we thought, and what we feel today, now that it has been ten years since the attacks.

I was in 10th grade AP Human Geography class when our principal came over the intercom and announced that a tragedy had occured in New York and that a commercial plane had hit one of the world trade center buildings. David was in his 11th grade calculus class. We were allowed to turn on the class televisions and watched the entire attack unfold. I think for both of us, we mostly felt shock. Shock that something like this could happen on American soil, and shocked at the amount of lives lost. Today, David and I both feel grateful for our freedoms, proud of military and proud of the job that President Bush did. It might be a little cliche, but we really are proud to be Americans today and everyday. We are going to try and watch some of the 9/11 specials today/tonight, but some of it feels a little hard to watch.

For david and I, we had a family weekend with just the two of us. We went and ate dinner with some friends from Sunday school at their apartment on Friday night, which was great! Saturday we slept in, cleaned the house, and went to eat lunch with our friend Becca. On Saturday we had a pretty intense rainstorm, which was great to hang out inside during. We finished off Saturday by walking down to the Prairie Village center (about a mile from our house) and having dinner out on the patio at Blue Moose. Deuce was in attendance as well. There were two other dogs on the patio that night, and Deuce did pretty good!

Recently, David was asked to sing on the church praise team, which means he stand up front on stage with a microphone. He had been practicing for a while and today was his first Sunday as a praise team member! I was so proud! I managed to snap off a picture without too many people noticing. :)

Image

I was so proud of him up there. David has a wonderful voice that I have always enjoyed. Now he is getting to share it even more at church! He will do it every other Sunday from now on, unless we're out of town.

Welcome back football, goodbye lake!

We have had a GREAT weekend. Before I tell all about the weekend, I'd like to mention that Deuce got terribly sick this week and also killed a chipmunk (maybe the two are related?). Not to worry, he's on plenty of medicine and feeling much better. Apparently our dog has some serious allergies.

Now, on to the weekend. We left on Friday afternoon for Fayetteville to meet my family for the game. We hung around on Saturday and ate breakfast at ihop before tailgating. We tailgated for about 3 and half hours and got to see so many great friends! At the beginning of the tailgate a photographer from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette showed up and took our picture! Maybe we'll be in the paper! :) Here's the link to the picture...I don't know if it'll work or not.

We ate Chick-fil-A and lots of other great food all day. Here are some pictures from the tailgate and game.

My best friend Lauren, and her son Parker came to hang out too. I couldn't have been more excited.

Some of the other girls that came by who happen to be my sorority sisters as well.

David and Parker had tons of fun. He also loved my Dad, like all kids seem to do.

Some of the old roommates united again! We love getting to see these great couple friends.

At the game. GO HOGS!

The Razorbacks beat Missouri State 51 to 7. We left at halftime to drive down to the lake. Every Labor Day my Dad's side of the family has a reunion. This time we were only missing three cousins! On Sunday we headed out onto the lake to hang out all day. It was overcast part of the day and then it got sunny. We just had a great time swimming, eating, laughing, and catching up on everything that has been going on. Here are all the grandkids (my Dad's oldest's brother's grandkids). So these are my cousins' kids. Adorable.

Emily (4) took a liking to David.

William (2 1/2) got some major quality time in.

After the day on the lake we had a big family dinner at the trailor. We grilled steaks, ate fruit salad, mashed potatoes, salad and had "The Recipe" and a delicious cake that Mom made. This morning we all ate breakfast together at the Lodge. Uncle Ted is holding his phone up in this picture because my cousin Will was on the phone. :)

Image

Trotter, Jennifer, Clancy, Ben, Louise and Beck...you were greatly missed!

Weekends like this are so much fun. The Fall brings football and seeing more of family. We're sad to see the lake go until next summer, but this was a great way to head into Fall.
