Its a Sunshine Day

The title of this post is a tribute to the episode of The Brady Bunch I watched earlier this week, and the sunshine that finally showed up this weekend.

I spent my whole day yesterday volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and it was a great day to be outside. I didn't take my camera, but I'm going back in two weeks and will take it with me then. I learned some new skills and enjoyed working with Kanita, the homeowner. She said her kids are so excited they ask if they can drive by the house all the time.

The Prodigals, a Celtic band performed at the Shell tonight. They did even fancier things with the lighting tonight:

The bass player is Bulgarian, so naturally I thought of you Kidd! You should check this band out.

And I leave you with a preview of Martha's outfit for the first day of Homecoming week. It is Color day, where each grade wears a different color. I won't insult you by telling you what color the Seniors are:)

FRASE PROTECTION

Although it was a dark, rainy morning, I could not resist taking pictures while I was driving this morning. Frase, we need to find out if this belongs to some of your kinfolk... I didn't have time to follow them and ask if they knew you.

ImageI wonder if they could tell I was taking a picture, since I did use my flash....

Toubab Krewe at Levitt Shell

Image

Tonight we enjoyed Toubab Krewe at the Shell. Their music is a fusion of American and West African influences to make their own sound. It was my first concert without any vocals.... and I did enjoy that at times the sound reminded me of Dave Matthews Band without any words. I was impressed with the lighting of and its changing of colors. Here is a video so you can check out the music too:

P.S. Check out the girls dancing on the front right... I think they should have been on stage:)

Paint Project & CY Festival

My nights and weekend have been filled with a painting project this week. Samantha and Danielle have an awesome new apartment and I volunteered to help paint Samantha's room and bathroom. I'll update with pictures once furniture and everything are in so you can get the full effect.ImageImageImage
And yesterday the rain cleared for most of the day and I went to the Cooper Young Festival with Amy and Karen. I think Karen said it best when she described it as a sensory overload: good music, art, food, and people bumping into each other. I even elbowed one woman in the forehead. I was adjusting my bag on my shoulder and felt SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad! I was excited to enjoy a Steak & Lamb Pita with Tzatziki, bringing back fond memories of being in Greece last year.

A Weekend Worth Looking Forward To:

Since this past week was my first full week and my job* I was certainly looking forward to the weekend. I made a quick trip to Arkansas on Saturday to officially say goodbye to Callie before she heads to London next week to Study Abroad. We had a great Italian lunch and lots of good conversations that made me anxious to travel abroad again. She is keeping a blog here if you are interested in following her travels.

I have been going to a new church here in Memphis, the Neighborhood Church, and I have loved getting involved and building relationships there. After church the past few Sunday nights a group from church has been going to the Levitt Shell which is an outdoor amphitheater where Elvis and Johnny Cash performed before they were stars. Last week Tibetan Monks performed and tonight it was Hawaiian music. Arkansas friends think the Greek Theater with grass instead of the concrete seating.

And last night, the Neighborhood Church hosted the Co-op Kitchen. A group of us got together to make single servings of meals that we could all take home and freeze. The meals are ideal for single people, so that we can eat healthier and cheaper. And we had a BLAST preparing all the food last night. I also learned a few new cooking tips, so watch out!

ImageImageImageThis last picture is the whole group at an awkward angle, but we were being resourceful with the self-timer so we could include everyone. And, although there is no photographic proof that I did any work, rest assured that I worked on preparing the chicken enchilada casserole, and my group finished early, just for the record.

*For those of you who don't know, I have a temporary job right that I am so thankful to have. It will only last maybe 8 weeks, so I am still pursuing other opportunities.

Flash Mob Dance

In celebration of Oprah's 24th season, the show surprised her with the largest Flash Mob in one place during the Black Eyed Peas performance. I hope that the celebration of my 24th birthday will be at least as fun as watching this video.

I do think its a little awkward that everyone but that one girl are standing still at the beginning... I mean is it really possible to stand still while listening to any BEP song? Certainly not Let's Get It Started and My Humps..... But the dance is awesome enough to make up for it. Who else wants to learn it?

Jumping on the Blog Train

I read more blogs than I'd like to admit, and finally decided to participate.

I call my blog 'Virginia, Right Now' because after a summer of focusing when I get a job or when I move out of my parents house or when God shows me my life plan, I am learning to live my life to the fullest right now.

Props to my sister for this link, but you totally have to check it out: givesmehope.com
