somewhere only we know.
sch attachm*nt prog has been super tiring... 7.20-5pm work hours are no joke.
nevertheless, in little ways each day i've been slowly finding out why I wanna be in this.. how I can possibly play a meaningful part. hopefully it gives me enough sense of purpose to keep me anchored for many, many days ahead, for me to stop moping about the state of my life every other day from now on.
that aside. i really do miss my vacation though. WAH! haha. cheers to everyone.
/aside: catch a free musical showcase by friends of NTU Music Express this sat 2-4pm at the Esplanade Lib! i'll be chippin in my two songs' worth..hehe. it's absolutely free! hope to cya there :)

haha tiny mall door that's left for us to walk through after one crazy night of shopping wayyyyy beyond closing hours
Lankwaifong - hot night spot for hk

amazed by how the entire stretch of road and shops is inclined at an angle! brought to see here by concidence...also due to the hospitable nature of chin's aunt who so kindly took time off to show us here on a whim. we wouldnt have got here ourselves as much as we wanted to haha.
at the airport-
now THIS. got us RUNNING ALL THE WAY from Hk ter 2 to ter 1 immediately after we checked in our luggage.... haha... risking our flight back home plus a couple hundred bucks in compensation for a second ticket home (not forgetting horrific lectures from mum and dad)....
KRISPY KREME DONUTS!!!! :):)one of a kind! "Out of this world."(chin's aunt Jeanie, 2008)!
the girls packed donuts by the dozens. i settled for a comfortable six. (and regretted it just a teeny bit since)
and yes, the verdict is out - be it newyorkcheesecake, mochachoccrumble, neopolitan flava and what have you........they ARE HEAVENLY. :)
hahaha. and thus our last moments spent in hk were spent this crazily. donut-shopping!
happy girls homeward bound -

and hello my friends. i'm home. obese and penniless. will u take me in? hehehe.
i'm moping about complaining it was too shorrrrrrrtt. :(
haha but well i shouldnt be greedy.
shall be content with this nice little pocket of memories i've got. and some streaks of broken canto! heeheehee.
4 days and 3 nights, 5 girls and hk - sweet and just right. :)
You Are a Dreaming Soul
|

Your vivid emotions and imagination takes you away from this world
So much so that you tend to live in your head most of the time
You have great dreams and ambitions that could be the envy of all...
But for you, following through with your dreams is a bit difficult
You are charming, endearing, and people tend to love you.
Forgiving and tolerant, you see the world through rose colored glasses.
Underneath it all, you have a ton of passion that you hide from others.
Always hopeful, you tend to expect positive outcomes in your life.
Souls you are most compatible with: Newborn Soul, Prophet Soul, and Traveler Soul

Women are from... men are.
sidetracking from editing TWO project reports, one due tmr (in slightly under 24 hours.), the other, the day after.
from
Language in Usehttp://www.putlearningfirst.com/language/23sexism/genderlect.htmlMen and Women. Do They Speak the Same Language?Women 'gossip' while men 'talk shop', men are "firm" while women are "bossy."
There is a widespread belief that women talk more than men, yet research findings consistently contradict this. Men have been shown to talk more than women in settings as diverse as staff meetings (Eakins and Eakins 1978), television panel discussions (Bernard 1972) and husband-and-wife pairs in spontaneous conversation (Soskin and John 1963).
When asked to describe three pictures, male subjects took on average 13.00 minutes per picture compared with 3.17 minutes for female subjects (Swacker 1975).
Evidence suggests that men and women tend to discuss different topics (Aries and Johnson 1983; Seidler 1989). For example, men tend to talk about sport, politics and cars, whereas women tend to talk about child-rearing and personal relationships.
Recent work in Sociolinguistics has focused upon the variations in the conversational styles of men and women, and has tried to find reasons for these variations..
Female Patterns of SpeechIt seems women are more ready to let other speakers into the conversation or to allow another speaker to dominate the discussion.
Backchannels are not speaker turns in the normal sense but rather they acknowledge what the current speaker says and generally encourage her/him to go on (Stenstrom 1994,5).
In the following dialogue speaker <1>, a man, is holding the floor and speaker <2>'s contribution is limited to a series of supportive backchannels.
Speaker <2>, it hardly needs saying, is a woman.<1> I saw a kingfisher Saturday morning<2> Did you?<1> It took off about three feet from my side. I didn't see it in the bush. It took off out of a bush, [went]<2> [Mm]<1> past the front of me canoe and look into a tree. (I sat there]<2> [Very nice]<1> and thought <2> Yeah [lovely]<1> (looking] down at me ,but the sun was shining Saturday morning early it was real bright<2> BeautifulWomen tend to use more standard forms of English.
At an early age, girls tend to have one or two girlfriends with whom they play regularly. They are more likely to discuss feelings and the impact of events upon themselves.
Women use language to create and maintain social cohesiveness and their activities are generally
co-operative and non-competitive.A study of children at play in a Philadelphia street (Goodwin: 1980; 1988; 1990) found that girls tended to use mitigated directives, i.e. when they wanted to get the group to do something they used suggestion rather than a direct command. Girls use forms like 'let's', 'we're gonna', 'we could' to get others to do things, instead of appealing to their personal power.
Women send out and look for signs of agreement and link what they say to the speech of others. They are careful to respect each other's turns in speaking and tend to apologise for talking too much.
Some vocabulary items are gender dependent. A word like "gorgeous", for example is three times as likely to be used by a female speaker as by a male (men use it only to talk about women, not for example about clothes, furniture, or food), while the expression "ever so nice" is used most typically by women over 45, and hardly ever by men of any age.
In all female groups women often discuss one topic for more than a half-hour.
(---> ahahaha GUILTY as charged!)Men tend to use less standard forms of English.
On the whole, boys have a larger network than girls, partly because of the types of activity they engage in, e.g. football.
Boys tend to have more hierarchically organised groups than girls and speech is often used to assert dominance. Goodwin's study (cited above) found that boys used aggravated, or explicit directives to get what they wanted, e.g. 'Get off', 'Gimine', 'I want'. This type of command establishes status differences.
Certain stylised speech events such as joking, arguing and storytelling are valued in the boys groups.
Men tend to jump from topic to topic, vying to tell anecdotes about their achievements. They rarely talk about their feelings or their personal problems.
(----> LOL - such precision! Welcome to the life story of my dealings with men.)Men compete for dominance, with some men talking a lot more than others. They don't feel the need to link their own contributions to others. Instead, they are more likely to ignore what has been said before and to stress their own point of view.
What Happens in Talk Between Men and Women?Lack of Communication is one of the most frequently given reasons for breakdown of marital relations.
Traditionally, it has been seen as the woman's responsibility to initiate conversations on topics likely to be of interest to men, and to maintain the conversation.
Pamela Fishman taped daily conversations of three young American couples (fifty-two hours of speech). She found that
women asked the vast majority of questions: 263 out of a total of 370. This may reflect women's relative weakness in interactive situations: they exploit questions and answers in order to force a response and keep the conversation going.
Women are much more likely to use minimal responses (e.g. 'yeah' or 'mhm',) to signal their active involvement in the conversation and to support the current speaker (Fishman 1980a; Coates 1989; 1991). (--> hee, GUILTY as charged. (but not sorry...:P))In mixed-sex conversations men interrupt women more, with the result that women are less able to complete their turns at talk and tend to talk less.
(---> and all this while i kept thinking it was always bcos i was just too plain/ugly/boring to get them to listen to ME for a change. hmmph.... hahaha)As a result, men tend to dominate topics of conversation and women tend to take on the role of listener.
Powerful and Powerless LanguageThe following ten features have been identified as "Women's Language" (based on: Lakoff 1975):
1. Hedges, e.g. sort of; kind of, I guess;
2. (Super) polite forms e.g. would you please...I'd really appreciate it if:..,
3. Tag questions;
4. Speaking in italics, e.g. emphatic so and very, intonational language;
5. Empty adjectives, e.g. charming, sweet, adorable!; . (------> oh no, HAHAHA!)
6. Hypercorrect grammar and pronunciation;
7. Lack of a sense of humour e.g. poor at telling jokes;
8. Direct quotations, e.g. "Hannah said that he said...";
9. Special vocabulary, e.g. specialised colour terms like 'Dove grey';
10. Question intonation in declarative contexts.

我很贪心
thx ej for ur words of comfort.. lol.. i whine too much for my own good sometimes.
anyway ok this is a bit out of point -
with some motivation from a dear friend.. i have resolved to work towards becoming a more FIT person this year! lol. promised dear wl, tt we'll promise to fight the supposed inevitable reality of becoming flabby and hopeless when we get to middle age and we've had kids and whatnot. heehee.. wise words from her dad about this really tickled me into laughter... and some thought as well..
just did a 30 min jog around the estate.. and my brain is migrain-y alr. lousy right! eeks. i'm gonna jio floor mates to play badminton and all in hall. late night badminton sessions are quite exciting.. as i discovered last month at 1am on a particular night. :P
ok. culture month is officially over! haha. a very memorable but extremely exhuasting period. shall blog/facebook more abt stuff if i have time :) now its SERIOUSLY time to catch up on the backlog of readings and to face up to project crunch time over this week and the next! then its a little breathing time of say 1 wk or so before its full gear for exams! woohoo. i just love school.
heehee actually i do la.. in most ways.. have this really strong feeling i'd prefer school life ALOT more than working life... cos its when u do have friends and all. things are planned out for u generally, BUT yet u generally possess excitement about it (err on MOST days? haha) cos pretty much anywhere, anytime, there wld be more opportunities for laughs.. more fun.. more unexpected little moments of fun and high-ness. those little things that add up..
ah school school. tricky love-hate dialectic going on somewhere. :)
hit sappens.
ahhh i just voice-called cheekies.. who happens.. to be currently sharing an apt at unc with grace and tat!! hahaha oh my goodness i hate to be cliche but i'm ever amazed by how diff people from diff parts of my life meet in ways like this. :)

I WANNA GO FOR AMPLITUDE!!!!!!
more than 10 of my close hall aca and choir frens performing tonight and its one of my fave things to watch... choir and funky, soulful acapella packed in one whole entertaining night....full of my fave bunch of people... arGhHhH. and lin's in it and its his final year and i just realised i may not get to go NEXT YEAR too.. ahh and goodness knows all the other horrible reasons that keep drifting into my thoughts hours after i made the decision NOT to go. :(:(
it seems i've been letting lotsa stuff go by these past few wks cos of the crazy things i've chosen to undertake/or just all chose to come together this sem.......just last week i missed huangcheng too for something else.. i'm missing my second sec 4 class gathering in a row.. my pri sch best fren's 21st birthday bash later this week..missing interhall dance perf chaired by my beloved neighbour in hall...
GOSH... but yeah anyway...
not much time to mope cos right now i gotta go and do up a project. those never-ending things...
>>whines<<
regrets, regrets, regrets...
plus the accompanying helplessness.
sigh.
why does achieving
Balance mean shaving off a part of what's dear, everytime?
a Verrry Special Vday :)
1230mn- went for 4F + chin/chan supper. troop of close to 20 of us going crazy along pasir panjang road and at the prata place. :)
zhangyao joined us for the first time, charades('crusades' in minyi's terms), chinese taboo and all sorts of silly games. surprisingly empty fongseng early vday. :) shared rj with siewling and discovered more gossip.
woke up and had a rather panicky morning. rushing readings for project consultation meeting at 230. not before chionging for 12noon lecture. limhanshe was super funny.. wanted to beat previous lecturer's record so she actually finished the entire lecture at 1250! haha. sandra and pris were super sweet.. buying everyone in our grp chocs and writing little notes. this despite the fact that i really only knew them for a very short period of time compared to smellie and yj.
yayness! early release means lunch as a five-some for once. :) everyone in a pretty good mood today. conv dominated by yj suan-ning mel for being late and all sorts of stuff. hahaha
then walked with pris to lib to find some quiet spot to finish my reading before proj meeting. haha what verb shall i use..i er..caught sight of kc! and was happy enough for a while. :)
bumped into joanna and saw her n pris exchange really pretty gifts for each other:) boy the mood in sch today is really so warm and fuzzy. :) bumped into mini at the reading area just as i was done n abt to go.. talked excitedly abt funkyfish gathering comin soon :)
proj meeting went pretty smoothly and memorably. i thank the lord for helping me learn to be more patient..grateful for the fact that we were on-task today! consultation w prof aint too bad too. :) cept it was really yingkin's time to shine with his super zai knowledge of the brain and all we need to do. woohoo.
hah then got back to hall for last min chionging of vday pressies before chionging out again for....

A pretty spontaneously-organised thing. we were very very blessed to have gotten a table tonight.
Things to do with your flowers 1 -

my sister the Ariel wannabe

-LOTS of food, ambience, fun, and crazy sisterly things to do = very memorable night :)
(sidenote- bus/mrt/blah traffic was terrible last night!)
the sad part was i had to chiong back after dinner to a project meeting with 'sther, andi n smels....
haha we were totally not in the mood at all. lobby was a bad place to meet. full of interesting people coming in and out! hall prod ppl with their lovey-dovey (not to mention noisy) flower/gift/donut-giving, dennis and e bizcomm ppl with their final sales of unsold flowers... traces of scandals flying ard..haha so fun. :)
went back to room to find more roses and gifts from dear floormates and frens!

--feeling very loved. :)
