Making a difference...One Starfish at a time

Our family started fostering back in 2005. We have been blessed to love on many babies. There has been many twists and turns throughout our journey and in December of 2010 we were called for placement of a newborn baby boy. His biological mother worked a case plan for 18 months and after 23 months she surrendered her rights and we adopted 'Sprout' in December of 2012. Our faith has been tried and tested and we are still certain that God is faithful!

So, last week there was a vacation day, Monday.  On Wednesday, Sprout's bio mom was a no show, no call.  When asked later why she missed she said she was at the Doctor.  Hmmmm.  Then, last Friday the agency worker dropped him off for his 4 hours visit.  As far as I know, everything went well.  When he was brought home late on Monday of this week, the worker informed me that bio mom took him for a bus ride with her 'friends'.  I know I'm not really allowed to freak out...but I did.  No more details were given but I know that it was documented.  When I asked if she was allowed to take him on the bus he gave me a firm "NO".   Today is Wednesday.  I dropped him off at D$$ for his 3 hours with his bio and after about 20 minutes I got a call from the agency worker asking me to please pick him up after an hour and a half.  He explained that she brought a microwave lunch for him and they had no microwave to heat it up.  When I dropped him off with her I explained that woke up late ( 9am) and that he was ready for BREAKFAST.  It drives me crazy that she has no common sense  :(  He was so excited to see my hubby and I when we went to get him and he immediately started signing 'more' and 'eat'.  It's the last day of February.  We go back to court in May.  She has a LONG road ahead of her.

Sprout was sick for a bit last weekend.  He had some kind of stomach bug :(  I was kind of happy there was no visit on Monday (due to it being a holiday).  When we got to the D$$ buliding for his visit on Wednesday I had this funny feeling she wasn't going to show.  I was right.  No call, no show.  The county worker even called her cell to see where she was and it went directly to voicemail.  So, we went home.  I held my sweet boy a bit tighter and enjoyed the day with him.

So much going on here.  Thankful for vacation next week.  Sprout's visits (as of this week) have been modified to give bio mom time with him during hours in the day other than morning.  So he's with her from 2-6 one day a week.  In that time, she has to feed him 2 meals and since he is usually a morning napper she has to keep him safe and occupied for 4 hours.  So far, so good.

Lil Peanut is up to 12 pounds.  (We got him 2 months ago at 9.4) He is a bit delayed but since he is a preemie and passed the Early Intervention evaluation I guess as long as the dr's are aware...he'll be ok.  We are following up with the developmental pediatrician, pediatric endocrinologist and the cardiologist to rule out and issues.  Since his situation is so unique, the only one I have to compare him to is his twin.  I have been in touch with his aunt and she has sent videos of his twin.  The twin is truly advanced compared to Lil Peanut.  I was informed at his last well baby visit that he had a Grade 3 brain bleed (as a 31 week preemie). Anyone with knowledge of long term effects PLEASE send some info in the comment section!!  He is a happy boy and now rolling front to back and back to front.  He is FINALLY in 3-6 month clothes and size 2 diapers.  He is VERY long!!   Loving the time I have with the 2 of them.  They both LOVE to look at each other and Sprout 'talks' to Peanut all the time.  He is very gentle with him (aside from trying to pull his socks off!)  Hoping I can fill you in on our next adventure in the coming weeks...

A while back I adjusted the boys visit schedule to accommodate MY LIFE.  It's been nice to consolidate the 2 visits into ONE day!  Sprout and Lil Peanut have visits on the same day, at the same place (D$$), for (almost) the same time.   Today when I dropped Sprout off his mother informed me that he 'was throwing a tantrum' last visit and hit his head and screamed.  Remember, he has staples in his head from his injury last week.  She told me that once she kissed his head he was fine.  SO MUCH of her story just did NOT sit right with me.  He doesn't throw tantrums.  EVER!  If he was truly injured (like the staples going into his head more) he would NOT have calmed down with 'a kiss on his boo boo'.  :*(  What the heck goes on when he is there???  There are so many little things that I see when he comes home.  He's a bit angry, sometimes fresh and always tired...even if she says he napped.  My heart breaks for the time I have to send him but I understand I have no choice. I can only pray that God protects his little body and his tender little heart while he is with her.

Haven't updated on Lil Peanut for a while.  He's still here.  Growing big and strong.  Last weighed he was up to 11lbs 11.8 ounces.  He goes back for a well check on Tuesday.  I have been in contact with his family member down south and she sent pics of his twin.  They're identical.  The twin is a bit bigger but everyone thinks that the reason mom left Peanut here is because he was the weaker one.  So glad he is going to family who is loving and excited to get him.  Court is this week.  We'll see if they make any progress on the 1CPC.  I've heard it can take anywhere from UP TO 6 months to a year to move him down south to be with his twin.  He has a sweet smile (you can see here) and he is really starting to make great eye contact.  He 'found' his hands and 'talks' to them constantly.  HIs schedule is a bit more predictable now and he is sleeping through the night for the most part.  So glad we got to be a part of his life, however long it takes the system to find where he belongs.

First ER visit with Sprout.  He was playing and hit his head on the floor corner moulding  :(  He is such a little tough guy!  2 1/2 hours and 3 staples in his head later...we're home.
