Stories and Editorials

The clock is ticking on art exchange! For those participating, please make sure you have something you can present to the organisers by the 19th so they can sort out any pitch-hitters as is needed.

Back in October, we saw the highly anticipated annual horror anthology make its way onto the wiki. This year it was themed around the "the errs of the human soul in reflection of the divine" and the Tree of Life. As YossipossiYossipossi ran the anthology this year, we decided to ask them for their thoughts now that the anthology is over.

1) This years anthology theming was quite different to those of the past, being structured around the Kabbalah and 10 sefirot. Why is this the direction you took this years anthology?

There are two reasons I picked the Kabbalah theming, one personal and one practical.

The personal reason is obvious to anyone who knows me: I am an Orthodox Jew. I was born Jewish, raised in a Jewish household, and am still very, very Jewish. If you'd like me to be specific, I was raised Chabad (though educated in Ashkenazi schools), which is a Jewish sect that leans heavily into Kabbalistic teachings for moral guidance. The Tree of Life (or Etz Cha'im) is, to put it simply, one of the mechanisms in the text used to understand how the Divine interacts with the world — and the moment I discovered it, I knew it would be excellent writing fuel. So, when I asked S D LockeS D Locke to run this year's anthology, I already had in mind what to theme it around.

The practical reason is a little more nuanced: Anthology fatigue. The 2022 and 2024 Anthologies were both daily, month-long events; 2023's anthology was still a full 18 days and articles. People have gotten pretty tired of them, especially since they take up all the attention for the full month of October. So I figured it would be worth mitigating this by having a shorter Anthology. And for what it's worth, several people have told me they appreciated the conciseness this year, especially after we experienced the behemoth of the SCP-9000 Contest.

2) How did the lower number of articles (only running through the last 3rd of October instead of the full 31 days) effect things behind the scene?

While there were a couple of difficulties in general with the pressure of each person to perform well, the small amount of authors meant that this year's Anthology was overall a more enjoyable and casual experience. Fewer drafts meant that everyone could provide timely, in-depth critique to one another; every single entry got quite a lot of analytical criticisms and suggestions, which vastly improved the overall quality of each work. We could also invest a lot more time and effort into everyone's marketing, with two art pieces being created for each piece (by the talented LuxaikoLuxaiko and masterful GraveCreationsGraveCreations!) as well as amazing audio recorded by TheExploringSeriesTheExploringSeries to reel readers in. Overall, it let us put a lot more effort into each entry than if there were, say, thirty-one.

Also, because of how diverse and small the author pool was, everyone invited to this year's Anthology made at least one new friend. I think they're actually using the server for a new DND group now!

3) How do you think this anthology compared with those of years prior?

In my opinion? It's absolutely on par with last year. Each author put their heart and soul into their entry and then spun it through the wringers of critique for over a month. So even if there's a smaller quantity, the quality is very high. It's definitely my favorite anthology — though I might be biased, haha.

4) Do you have a favourite work from this anthology?

It's hard for me to pick, because every entry is incredible. Malkuth is a disturbing and doomed narrative about mankind's hubris; Yesod is an utterly terrifying hard-sci-fi cosmic horror; Hod is a truly visceral and disgusting delve into the rotten psychology of the wealthy; Netzach is an action-packed, fast-paced, and strangely-hilarious Coldest War thriller; Tiphereth is an uncomfortable "small town" eldritch takeover with stomach-churning images; Chesed is a deeply tragic and painful story on forced childbirth; Geburah is a short but powerful metaphor with deep-cutting visuals and themes; Hokma is a moist article that gets under your skin, with absolutely phenomenal prose and gorgeous aesthetics; Binah is a fully fleshed-out (machined-out?), deeply-touching character piece about escaping a cult; Keter is an existential, thought-provoking piece on the nature of the Divine; and Da'at is a classic horror story that ties everything together in the way it explains nothing. They're all phenomenal, and all in unique ways!

If you pointed a gun at my head and forced me to pick, I would probably pick Hod, Keter, and Chesed as my Top 3 favorites — but it's an extremely close and extremely difficult choice, because every article was (at least, in my opinion) exemplary in its genre. Everyone I've asked has had different opinions on their favorite entries; it just goes to show how good each entry is. :D

5) Do you have any future anthology plans you can share?

I don't intend to lead another Anthology in the future (this anthology, with only 11 authors, was hard enough!), but I can say I will likely have a role in next year's, and not as an author. Stay tuned!

6) Any closing thoughts you'd like to share?

Running this Anthology was an incredibly wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Over the past seven or so months, I've met lifelong friends, had countless unforgettable interactions, and helped cultivate some of the best articles released this year. Even if the readership was less plentiful this year, I wouldn't have traded running this project for the world.

In Kabbalah, the Sephiroth transform the Divine Light — through the act of creation — into a physical world. Much like the Sephiroth, I want to thank the people who brought this project into reality:

S D LockeS D Locke, for giving my the opportunity and encouragement to pursue running this year's SCP Anthology;
LuxaikoLuxaiko, who made the icon art on the hub, and whose psychological prowess helped motivate the authors in several unique ways;
GraveCreationsGraveCreations, who made the banner art on the hub, working through thick and thin, and helped boost morale with his sharp humor;
TheExploringSeriesTheExploringSeries, who agreed to provide his phenomenal voiceovers for the hub, producing them in an incredibly timely manner with consistent high quality;
EstrellaYoshteEstrellaYoshte, who helped set up the hub to begin with, and produced the striking visual layout of the final hub page;
radian628radian628, who did all the ✨
fancy✨
JavaScript and SVG work to make the details of each entry shine;
And finally, of course, the incredible authors who participated this year: AftokratorAftokrator (Malkuth), psulpsul (Yesod), xexnoncoresxexnoncores (Hod), A Random DayA Random Day (Netzach), QueeriousQueerious (Tiphereth), DeadcanonsDeadcanons (Chesed), FelixouFelixou (Geburah), IntercedentIntercedent (Hokma), Tao McCawleyTao McCawley (Binah), TuftoTufto (Keter), and DrEverettMannDrEverettMann (Da'at). This, quite literally, would not have been possible without you.
And thank you for reading this interview! If you haven't already, please check out some of the entries; there's something here for everyone!

This year, the Japanese Branch is starting their new series and they kick it off with a 4K-Contest!

You can check out the contest hub here. Be sure to support the amazing authors of the Japanese branch!

Here we have Jiraku_MoganaJiraku_Mogana to give us some inside look into the contest:

1. The theme for your Kcon being “wazawai”. Could you elaborate more on what that means and why you picked it for this year’s contest?

It means disaster, misfortune, evil, trouble, etc. In Japan, the number 4 and the word for death share the same pronunciation. This led to many unlucky suggestions being submitted during the preliminary 4k theme questionnaire.
Detailed reasons are documented in this forum.
http://scp-jp.wikidot.com/forum/t-17167788/scp-4000-jp

2. How do you and other authors manage and plan this event?

Japanese branch has an Events Committee that manages events. Discussions take place on the Discord server.

3. What were your favorite entries in the last contest?

I looked back, but SCP-3000-JP was still the best in SCP-3000-JP contents. I think the story matched the SCP Foundation's universe.

4. If you’re participating in the contest, would you like to briefly touch upon what your entry is about? You can be as detailed or vague as you wish.

My personal life has been very busy (I went to Thailand, Lumiose City, and Skyah). So I'm not sure if I'll make it in time, but if I do manage to post, it's going to be something that could spell trouble for SCP-JP.

5. Would you like to share any tips/advice for writers who wish to contribute to the contest?

If any useful tips exist, I wanna know too hahaha!

I think contests require more than just submitting articles. We like our contestants to give it their all in their entries. At the end of the day, we’re still creating things from our hearts and it’ll only matter if it matters to you.

And of course, lots and lots of feedback helps too!

6. Do you have any final thoughts you would like to share with readers?

Kcon is a rare celebration in SCP-JP. I think authors will write very, very, very great articles, with readers helping out to build excitement, such sharing articles, first impressions, translating, drawing artworks and so on.

I would also like to thank Site News on the EN-Branch for reaching out and sharing this next chapter into our community!

Greetings, goblins and ghouls from every corner of the world. I am Uncle NicoliniUncle Nicolini, your gracious host for this newest segment of Site News; none other than the Creature Feature! "What is the Creature Feature?", I hear you ask. Well, my fellow creatures of the night: this new segment is aimed at putting your furry, scaled, and feathered friends in the spotlight! That's right, we're doing Super Cute Pets, starring you, the reader's, very own animal companions!

Creature Feature FAQ

"How do I get my pet on there?"

Simply submit an image hosted on the SCP sandbox or other image hosting service via PM to DianaBerryDianaBerry, MetalRavioliMetalRavioli, or Uncle NicoliniUncle Nicolini, along with a paragraph or so telling us your pet's name, species, and a little about them!

"Is there anything I need to agree to?"

Only that you are releasing the image of your pet under CC BY-SA 3.0! Its the site license, after all.

"Anything else?"

Nope! All you gotta do is wait. And who knows? Maybe your pet will be the next month's Creature Feature!

And now, for the main attraction…

Presenting… Boomer!

boomer2.jpg

Hello readers, I am MetalRavioliMetalRavioli, and our inaugural creature is my sweet and handsome man Boomer! He was found as a stray in Texas around 2015, where he was put in a high-kill shelter. Thankfully, PAWS New England rescued him, which is where me and my family met and adopted him! The first thing he did when he got home was jump up on the table and get a rubber bouncy ball stuck in his teeth, later followed by some tuckered out cuddles. I've loved him ever since.

Boomer is a jack-russell terrier mix — mixed with what? I'm not entirely sure. Probably poodle and some other terriers, but whatever he is he's been the best dog a girl could ask for. He's loved adventure, playing, tug-of-war, bones, and of course cuddling up in my bed at night. He's my best friend.

Recently though, Boomer developed arthritis, along with lysis in his cervical vertebrae. While the medications he's been on have helped, unfortunately his lysis has quickly progressed to where he can no longer move or relax comfortably. After celebrating his 10th birthday earlier this month, these next few days will be my last with him. Rest assured I am spending all my time laying with him and keeping him company. Even as I write this, he's by my side.

From all our adventures and hikes together, to teaching him tricks and snuggling together, Boomer will always be the best dog and the best boy I could've wished for. Love you, buddy 💛
