Preschool at home: Dinosaurs!

Since we moved half way through the preschool school year for Lily and Grace, I thought it would be best if we took the rest of the school year off and I taught them preschool at home. I'm having fun with this and so are the girls. I try to have Gabe join in as much as he can. I'm loving coming up with themes, digging through my old school supplies and coming up with lesson plans.

Note: As much as we all love it, I have to be honest and let everyone know that I do miss my alone time  with my shopping/coffee buddy Gabe while the girls were in preschool 2-3 times a week :)

The first theme we did was Dinosaurs and we studied them for 2 weeks. The girls were so into it and I loved that. They now know tons of dinosaur names and facts. Nothing is cuter than your 3 year old saying big words like "carnivore" and "herbivore". I borrowed lots of books from the library- including non fiction books and now Lily knows the difference between non fiction and fiction books and will come up to me everyday and say "Mommy I know what is fiction! This Little Critter book is fiction!" Gabe loved playing with all our plastic dinosaurs and especially in the dinosaur sensory bin filled with rice and beans.

Random order of pictures :)

At the end of the theme I asked Grace what her favorite thing about dinosaurs was- of course she said the meat eaters!

Gabe helped support our theme by wearing all his dinosaur shirts

We love this Melissa and Doug color sort toy. I bought it over a year ago we use it all the time. I was happy it had  a dinosaur sheet!

A friend made this light table for Lily's 5th birthday. We love using it with stencils. I'm still coming up with more lessons for it.

Painting cardboard dinosaurs (thanks to all the boxes we have) and they also painted clothespins too to make them a stegosaurus.

A game I played with Grace. I called a letter and she had to find the letter on her dinosaur and stamp it with the dot markers.

I found a bunch of dinosaur stamps that I got at a garage sale last year!

The only thing I bought for this theme was a felt board with dinosaurs only because Marty found it while we were at the craft store (searching for non-dinosaur related things)

(They rolled a dice and what number was rolled was the number they colored on their dinosaur)

Rice and beans
(The morning off I painted some beans blue for dinosaur eggs and ripped up some egg carton pieces and painted them like volcanoes)

Gabe loved the sensory bin and did not get any rice or beans anywhere!
(Note: We still get this out and he will end up throwing some beans and rice on the ground. It's definitely an activity I have to sit next to him and model good behavior.)

Grace painted a triceratops and wrote a story about her dinosaur. It says:
"My dinosaur is blue, white, yellow and blue. She likes to catch flies. She is a plant eater. Her name is Triceratops and she is a girl. She just likes to eat plants. Sometimes she goes in water."

Lily's  story:
"My triceratops is going to dress up. She is going to wear a purple dress. She is nice to people. She loves to paint and fall asleep. She is going to have a dinosaur party for all her triceratops friends!"

still supporting the dinosaur theme with a dinosaur shirt :)
(P.S. Now I see dinosaur shirts everywhere for boys! I had no idea how many dinosaur shirts were out there or that we even had a few of them at our house!)

Lily's favorite thing about dinosaurs is that they are extinct!

We are looking forward to warm weather and visiting the Field Museum to see a real T-Rex fossil "Sue".

Last Day of Winter Blues

We were spoiled by the winter we had last year. I remember taking the girls in January to the park in just their fleece jackets and I remember last March we dug through the bins for summer sundresses and bathing suits and went through the sprinkler since it was so warm outside. This winter was the opposite- cold and snowy. I love snow... I just like it on Christmas Day and once or twice in January to go sledding and make snowmen. On the last day of winter this year (just two days ago) we had the blues. We NEEDED to get out of the house. Marty was enjoying 90 degree weather in Texas for work and we were stuck in the Midwest with temps in the 20's and lots of wind. Gabe was clingy. The girls were starting to fight with each other. I was overwhelmed with school, missing Marty, tired of the wind keeping me (and Grace) up all night and Maisy just being annoying and barking at nothing outside the door. A trip to the mall was in order just to get out of the house.

just so everyone knows- This is a dress that Grace said she wanted for Christmas this year.

A visit to the Disney Store is in order (every time we go to the mall)
Even when Marty and I go on dates (without littles) and are at the mall we will still check out the Disney Store.
Also, we always leave empty handed unless we are Christmas shopping.
We may head to the Disney Store every mall trip but the kids know we are just there to look and not buy anything. Makes shopping  way easier. To this day we have never had a store meltdown because the kids weren't allowed to get something (toys, candy, whatever).

However, on this trip to the Disney Store when the girls weren't looking, I did buy Gabe this Mickey car for his Easter basket. I gave it to the Disney Store cashier to ring up AND then she gave it to Gabe! Gabe was so happy to have that car but it was meant for his Easter basket so I had to be a mean mommy and take it away and give him a Ritz cracker instead. He wasn't too upset.

Happy Meal lunch by the merry-go-round.

All malls should have a giant double decker merry-go-round.

Not sure how a bird got in the mall but Lily LOVED this bird and proudly named it "Easter bird". She is still talking about "Easter bird" and I hope we can find him/her next time we visit.
