The Tale of Three Tails

The other day, Aaron and I thought it would be a bright idea to measure the length of our three kitties.  We figured it would be fun to document their length differences – and to really see how stout our sweet Canela is compared to her sister and her brother!

So we did just that.

Much to their chagrin.

Image

Blue – The Stig / Pink – Canela / Brown – Kala

Shorter strings:  Tail measurements

Longer strings:  From the tip of the nose to the end of the tail

It wasn’t until after we let them loose, giving them all the opportunity to hide in the most unfindable place so that there was no chance of recapture, did I realize my husband was right.  Using yarn was, perhaps, not the best tool to use for measuring them.  It all of a sudden became really stretchy while working with wiggly, uncooperative subjects…

Imagine that.

Anywho, based on the measurements shown above, Stig ended up the same length as Kala.  This just isn’t the case.  Kala (in all her big kitty glory) has a good 2 inches on him.

But, what this picture does accurately depict is how much longer Kala’s tail is than the other two.  It’s enough to haunt any non-cat lover.

And, as part of the driving force to torture our little dudes, this picture does prove just how much shorter our sweet Canela is than her brother and sister – even if you were to take two inches off the blue yarn piece.  Poor girl.

Regardless of their length, they are all still the sweetest and awesome-est cats out there.  Actually, they are so sweet and so awesome they’ve made more than one non-cat-lover’s heart melt.  Yours could be next …

Image

Canela – 5 years old – well, she’ll be 5 next month.  She was the perfect kitty when we first got her … and she still is.  Just a little chubbier!  Uh, I mean … just more to love!  She loves to be near us, loves snuggling with her brother, and she always lets us know when her food dish is empty and needs refilling!

Image

Kala – 4 years old – our Tax Day baby.  Of course, when you adopt kitties from shelters, you never really know when they were born.  When we counted back the number of months of how old she was when we adopted her, it took us to April and we figured Tax Day was as good of a day as any!  Plus, our little Kala was ‘on sale’.  Making her birthday Tax Day only seemed to make sense – in a twisted sort of way.  She’s our sometimes grumpy, mostly anti-social dude – but we love her still.  And she loves us.  When she’s in the mood.

Image

The Stig – 1 year old – our Cinco de Mayo baby.  Our little crazy boy deserves a crazy date for his birthday.  What day of May is crazier than the 5th?  It all seemed so fitting.  He is just an all-around awesome cat.  He can always be convinced to play. Day or night.  Rain or shine.  In fact, he often plays so hard that there are pockets of every day – hours at a time – that he will disappear to take a nap.  Uninterupted.  We never know where to.  All we know is several hours later, he will secretly emerge, ready to pick up playing wherever he left off.

Me Then vs. Me Now

This morning – as I was shamelessly taking self portraits – I caught myself wondering how much my looks may or may not have changed over the years.

Does how I look now reflect the life experiences that have molded me into who I am?

I pulled out the infamous box of old photo albums and went down memory lane trying to find a picture that I could best compare this morning’s portraits to.

And this is what I came up with …

Image

Me and Nic (my younger brother) – March 1999

Image

Me – June 2011

And seeing how I’m the daughter of a lawyer, I figured it would only be right to weigh both arguments.

Not much has changed:

1)  My bangs still haunt me.  Daily.

2)  My eyebrows were just as unrecognizable then as they are today.

3)  It seems my fashion sense hasn’t changed either.  Short sleeved, collared, button down shirt.

4)  My smile.  Yup, still the same.

5)  The number one thing I love about myself – my eyes are still green.

Yes, change is apparent:

1)  I gave up on lipstick a long time ago.

2)  So that’s what my natural hair color looks like?  Wow.  I totally forgot.

3)  To me, it’s obvious that life has happened.  And in that sense, I look so young in the 1999 photo!

It’s almost like an optical illusion.  I look at these photos and can see how much I’ve changed.  But, if I keep staring, the change becomes harder and harder to see.

You know, I think the jury is still out on this one.

And they just might stay out.

Making Time to Pray

Throughout my years of accountability, I have uttered many prayers on bended knees with a sincere hope that they will be heard and that answers will be given.

I have expressed gratitude for the Lord’s blessings.  I have pleaded for miracles to be granted – for me and for loved ones.  I have begged for strength to keep my faith in the midst of trials.  I have expressed the submission of my will to the Lord’s and have listened intently to understand His will more fully.  I have asked that He be small enough to hear me and grant forgiveness for my shortcomings – only to have my heart swell with the confirmation that the Lord had already forgiven me.

I have had some of the most peaceful – and unforgettable – testimony building experiences while kneeling in prayer.

But what about saying prayers when I don’t have a specific reason and that don’t take me to my knees?

This question has sent my mind racing.  Morning prayers.  Nightime prayers.  Prayers of gratitude.  Prayers for safety.  Prayers to express to the Lord nothing else other than how awesome or crummy my day was.  These have become less a part of my routine and more of an afterthought for me.  But aren’t these prayers just as important to the Lord as those that bring us to our knees?

I am disappointed that I have let myself get so relaxed with my personal prayers.  I’ll be on my morning commute and realize, “Wow, I didn’t say a prayer to start my day this morning.”  Or I’ll be lying in bed with my brain two ticks away from shutting off for the night and think to myself, “I should say a prayer … but … I’m just too tired.”  Or I’ll be sitting on a plane taking off with this thought, “Why didn’t I take the time to pray and ask for safety as I travel today?”  A short, silent prayer is sometimes uttered in these instances – but nothing like what I should be doing.

“Access to our Creator through our Savior is surely one of the great privileges and blessings of our lives … No earthly authority can separate us from direct access to our Creator. There can never be a mechanical or electronic failure when we pray. There is no limit on the number of times or how long we can pray each day. There is no quota of how many needs we wish to pray for in each prayer. We do not need to go through secretaries or make an appointment to reach the throne of grace. He is reachable at any time and any place.”  James E. Faust

Prayer couldn’t be any more convenient.  The Lord has commanded us to pray.  He wants us to talk with Him.  And He has made it impossible for there to ever be a reason not to pray – other than ourselves.

“Prayer is a supernal gift of our Father in Heaven to every soul. Think of it: the absolute Supreme Being, the most all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful personage, encourages you and me, as insignificant as we are, to converse with Him as our Father … It matters not our circumstance, be we humble or arrogant, poor or rich, free or enslaved, learned or ignorant, loved or forsaken, we can address Him … He has created numberless cosmos and populated them with worlds, yet you and I can talk with Him personally, and He will ever answer.”  Richard G. Scott

Even if I am forgetful, I know I can still address our Father in Heaven.  I need to try harder, each day, to make my personal prayers a bigger priority.

I know it will only make my life more sweet and more meaningful.

Lucky No. 7

7 Reasons Why I’m One Lucky Girl:

1)  My sweet hubby came to Massachusetts over the weekend to enjoy some relaxing time with me, to see the area where I have pretty much lived for the past 10 weeks – and (the real reason) to keep me from having to log 10 hours of flying time in a span of 3 days!

2)  My husband is the sweetest!  Aaron is the most caring and considerate person I know.  He’s so good at taking care of me and my many needs.  I must have done something right to have the honor of calling him my eternal companion …

3)  I have one of the best jobs anyone could ask for.  Full stop.

4)  My co-worker offered me a pair of tickets to go see the Red Sox vs. Athletics game with my sweet hubby.

5)  We got to watch a ball game at The Fenway Park!  Not only did we go to Fenway, we sat in some of the best seats in the park and cheered for a team that Aaron loves to hate!  You see, Aaron is a huge Yankees fan (and I have to admit, I like the boys in pinstripes too), but that didn’t stop us from having a great time and enjoying the Green Monster in person! … and from me buying a Red Sox t-shirt to make sure we blended in with all the Boston crazies!

Image

6)  We got to visit another one of the Lord’s holy temples.  And, just like every other temple, it is beautiful and the grounds are magnificent.

7)  While we finished up our time walking around the temple grounds, Aaron put his arm around me and pulled me in tight.  In the silence of our embrace, we expressed our love for one another and had a common understanding of just how fortunate we are to be sealed together – forever.

Keeping my list to 7 means I’m extra lucky, right!?

The Work of A Master

“To truly reverence the Creator, we must appreciate His creations.

All the marvels of nature are glimpses of the Lord’s divine power and expressions of His love.”

Elder M. Russell Ballard

Picture taken at 30,000 feet, up above the clouds, on my last trip from PVD – PHX

“We can draw three lessons from nature’s grandeur:

First, God exists; second, God is powerful; and third, God loves us.”

Mark J. Nielsen, The Wonder of the Creation

When I observe the meticulous detail and absolute perfection of one of God’s creations, I am overwhelmed to be reminded that that very same attention to detail and pursuit of perfection played an integral role in creating me – My eyes, my nose, my hands, my knees.  My stride, my smile, my cackle – errr – laugh.

Who am I to criticize the work of a master?

Who am I to criticize the work of The Master?
