31 Is My New Favorite

You only turn 31 once.  Isn’t that how the saying goes?

Last week was the big day.  March 7th.  The one day of every year that Aaron gets most excited for!  (I may or may not be exaggerating just a little bit … ) Not because it means Spring Training is well under way and a new Baseball season is just around the corner.  Nor is it because the March Madness madness is just days away from starting.  And it’s certainly not because he can’t wait to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

It is simply because March 7th marks the start of the (very short) 7 month window that most obviously proves I am older than he is.

I keep trying to remind him it really isn’t that big of a deal …

He keeps trying to remind me of just how funny it really is …

Because nothing will change the fact that I will be 40 before him.  50 before him.  Heck, even when I turned 30, he rubbed it in that he was still in his 20’s!

At any rate.  It just so turns out that I may have to give it to him this year and let him tease me mercilessly.  Because.  This year probably tops my list of most memorable – and wonderful – birthdays.  To date.  He did a great job!

I don’t usually relish in my birthday celebrations – it is just another day after all, isn’t it!? – but considering the ‘most memorable’ status, I think this year deserves a little gloating!

The celebrations started on Tuesday night with a quiet, quaint dinner with my mother-in-law.  This was an awesome birthday gift in and of itself!  You see, Durdas love doing things big.  And loud!  Which is always great fun … until all of that bigness and loudness is directed to me!  I’ve never been one to eagerly anticipate a big celebration in my favor.  Knowing this, my mother-in-law opted to have a dinner with just the three of us (and little Clayton, as we were watching him that night) and it was wonderful.

Then on Wednesday, I managed to make it through the work day without any big hoopla or celebration.  In fact, there was nothing different about that day than any day previous to it.  Which, I know it may sound odd, but was another mark of a successful birthday for me!

Perhaps a little clarification is needed.  You see – I put the capital ‘I’ in Introvert.  Big hoopla’s, be it at work or with friends and family, always mean a bright red face and feelings of extreme awkwardness for me.  Which, is often fun for everybody else to see … but never a fun experience for me to go through!  Besides, hot flashes are always an immediate reaction to my face turning bright red!  And who, in their right mind, wants hot flashes!?

Now back to Wednesday.

Aaron came and picked me up after work, took me out to dinner, and joined me as my date to go see ‘Wicked’ for my third time!  I had high expectations that this show was going to be awesome.  Just like the previous two shows I had seen!  And, to nobody’s surprise, it was awesome!  It certainly helped that Aaron selected tickets 12 rows back and dead center!  Sometimes he makes it so hard to out-do himself!

Silly me for thinking that!

As we were on our way over to the theater, he reminded me of just how easy that is for him to do.  He gave me a small box with beautiful, sparkly earings in it that he had picked out earlier that day.  Just for his wifey.  He sure knows how to make his girl smile!

To finish the week off, my sister and her boyfriend had already planned on coming into town (to see my parents – certainly not just for my birthday!) so my parents took Aaron and I, along with my sister and her boyfriend, and my little brother and his family out for dinner and a Coyotes hockey game!  It was a Happy Birthday/Happy Anniversary get-together for my birthday, Robyn’s birthday, and Nic & Katie’s anniversary.  We had a blast!  And – the Coyotes won!  I think they wanted to join in on all this celebrating going on!

You know, after such a wonderful birthday celebration, maybe turning one year older than Aaron really isn’t so bad after all!
