Suspiria

Suspiria

Suspiria is considered to be one of the most iconic movies for the horror genre.

I say no. And i admit that it might be impolite of me to say so.

So i`ll point out some stuff in my way:

  1. although this movie is done in 1977 and it`s European, i must say that there are plenty of other “old” movies that give you chills. I think that Dario wanted something, but didn`t knew exactly what. Or at least, this is the impression that the movie left me.
  2. the soundtrack is horror. and i mean it in a bad way. I had to turn on the volume to hear the girls speak, and lower the volume when the music started playing. I understand the jump scare. But prolonged music with high pitched noises to intensify the action and what`s about to come is a “no, no”.
  3. the acting could have been improved (i`m being polite). From the start we can see that there is no emotion, no facial expression when the “terrified” girl tries to explain to her friend why she`s so unsettled. And it`s either with a blank face or with exaggerated reaction – remembering the girl trying to escape from the room with rolled wires.
  4. i will not say anything about the special effects, due to the fact that they are, in some places, really spot-on.
  5. the visuals are pretty good. I would have used different angles for various scenes. But it works like this also.

So, from my part, this is a one-time-see-movie. And i have to admit, i had to brace myself for the “horror” that was yet to come…

Get Out

Get out

So i`ve just watched this one.

And all i can say is that it`s pretty amazing.

It`s about a guy that goes at his girlfriend`s house to “meet the parents”. And we all know that it can be a shitty situation. But his situations is going to be worse.

The theme used in this movies resembles to the one in “The Skeleton Key”. As where in “The Skeleton Key” black people used white people`s bodies, in “Get Out” is the opposite – white people use black people`s bodies.

We have the straight up black dude with his white girlfriend going to her parents house to meet the family. And there are some stuff that would, in other typical movie, make the black dude get out there as fast and as soon as he can. But here, we see him in a different approach. He`s the investigator type. Breaking all the stereotypes in every other movie.

I mean, it kinda got me at a point where i started saying “something`s fishy here. get out dude!”.

The dad is too friendly with the guy that fucks his daughter. The mom is oddly calm about everything. The brother is high as fuck or mentally deranged. And the girlfriend is pretty comfortable with the situation.

I really enjoyed the fact that they had a good scenery regarding a new approach on the whole hypnosis thing.

And the bingo competition is really a good idea.

And as we are talking about black people in movies, there always will be a black dude that got his friend`s back. A really good turn of events. A bit far fetched, but still, it gets an A+.

But it still made me wonder about a few things:

  1. He called 911 when he got into the car before hitting “grandma”. And he said his name and location. What happened with that call?
  2. What happened after he got out? I mean, with the real cops? Is it going to be treated like an unfortunate event? Or are they going to investigate? Having in consideration that the only witness got out and he`s black and he`s going to mention hypnosis. If ever…
  3. And what about the whole bunch of people that were at the party? What`s up with them? Are they going to use the power that they have to cover things up or are they just going to surrender?

I mean, it`s a good movie, but with a lot of question marks at the end.

By this time, i can say that it`falls right along side (but ofc) “The Skeleton Key” and “Don`t Breathe”.  A different approach on the horror genre. Yet i have to say not quite horror (even though it can give you a few chills on the spine), but suspense for sure!

So give it a watch! You won`t regret it!
